What’s happening with your leftovers?
Here are past years for inspiration:
My neighbour liked my Canadian Thanksgiving turkey so much that I gave him all the leftover turkey I had frozen.
I already ate all the leftover stuffing from last night. I will let you know what I make with the half pound of turkey breast in the fridge.
Probably Coronation Turkey.
I’m too lazy to attempt chapati.
I’ve got my usual “train meal” of my favorites for the way home — Turkey, bread sauce / white gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing balls, and a few gratuitous green beans and Brussels sprouts on top to virtue signal
The leftover Brie and onion jam went home with — wait for it — the guest who took over the kitchen mid-turkey to make pesto and crostini. .
I’m going to see if Whole Foods has Turkey carcasses on sale, because I’m missing my aunt’s turkey soup and turkey curry — again — by virtue of leaving today and not staying the weekend, and those are better than the turkey itself.
I wish I could gift you my turkey carcass; I don’t like turkey soup.
I give it to my neighbor and she makes jook.
Sounds good! I’ll be shopping for parts.
A house quite near to the ricepad pad is for sale!
In montreal I could find them at a regular grocery store (freezer, also samosas!) - maybe you can too, otherwise use flour tortillas.
Our South Asian population in LdnOnt is growing very quickly right now, apparently mostly from 2 regions in India over the past 2 years. For the decade before, most of the South Asian immigrants were coming from Pakistan and Bangladesh, which helped set up a lot of Halal options in town. Yesterday, I was reading about a Halal Food Bank, which is providing food for at least 120 families in town.
Now, we also have some new South Indian street food options.
Which means my formerly WASPy part of town, where garlic and parsley were considered foreign 50 years ago, now has at least 5 new places for momos and Hakka Cuisine. Within 3 miles of my house.
It’s budget Indian and Hakka opening up, my city only has one finer dining Indian option right now.
At the closest budget grocery store, I can find various frozen Indian breads.
We also have close to a dozen Indian and other south Asian grocery stores in town right now.
I haven’t been buying the frozen chapati and other breads mostly to try to control the carbs in our house, even a little.
I do appreciate the suggestions.
I ate chicken salad with a spoon today to balance out the pumpkin pie carbs.
I love your virtue signalling!
I wonder if you will ever encounter that guest again! Did her amazing appetizers get eaten up? Sounds like you didn’t bring any of her leftovers home!
Turkey carcasses are the best! Years ago there were several stories in the Boston Globe featuring former Mass. governor and former presidential candidate Mike Dukakis and his use of turkey carcasses. Neighbors started dropping theirs off at his home in Brookline and he used all of them.
Until he got too many.
So glad you posted this. I can’t think of Thanksgiving turkey leftovers recalling this story about former Gov. Dukakis.
I myself like to use a turkey carcass to make avgolemono soup.
*without recalling.
Missed a word, oops.
did my overnight in the oven turkey carcass stock, and pulled off a lot of meat. put 4 quarts + most of the mear in the freezer. then added some flour and an egg to the stuffing and made dumplings that i poached in the remaining stock and meat.
Super trashy, but I snagged some leftovers from my sister’s and ate them on the plane home. I scooped up a couple of mustard and tabasco packets from the NOLA airport and threw them all over my cold fried fish (fake po’boy!) and cold potato casserole (fake knish!).
Bobby Flay made a video on what to not do as a guest. He mentioned not taking food that requires assembly, and food that requires the use of the oven.
Just prepped two shepherds pies using (loosely) Martha Stewart instructions. I do this every year and it’s a fun way to use up the leftovers. I froze one - not sure if I’ve done that before - we’ll see how it holds up in the freezer!
Also just threw the carcass into my stock pot for stock. Smells great!
I didn’t use much crabmeat for my crab/grapefruit/avocado salad on Thanksgiving so I used the rest to make crab cakes, which I pan-fried, and served with a remoulade and scrambled eggs.
Some guest.
Ooh now I want crabcakes (I always want crabcakes, to be fair)
Now I’m musing over shepherds pie va Turkey+leftovers pot pie (@MidwesternerTT had mentioned them on WMP).
I’ve got some (salty) mashed potato that I can supplement), and enough turkey for filling, plus some stuffing.
Hmm.
