I’m surprised you can’t get the wild Maine blueberries fresh. Can you get the regular ones fresh?
I’m not Linda, but I also live Boston area. I’ve seen the wild ones in season at some local Whole Foods stores. We do get fresh local blueberries at Boston area farmers markets in season as well, but I’ve never seen the wild Maine ones at farmers markets.
Regular cultivated blueberries are available fresh everywhere here pretty much year-round, either domestic or imported depending on the season. They are currently available at my local (SF Bay Area) farmers’ market, but the season is limited, as it is for all berries save strawberries.
When I think of wild Maine blueberries, I can’t help thinking of Blueberries for Sal.
On very rare occasion will I see fresh wild Maine blueberries (but I haven’t seen them in a long time), but yes, it’s just the regular larger blueberries.
I think the last time I saw them was at a small one-off organic market somewhere in central NH when I was out antiquing and stopped for a drink and some Scooby Snacks. I bought a quart and wished the store was closer, as I would have gone back to buy more.
I live in Maine and shop at farmers’ market once or twice every week in season, and they are not all that easy for me to get. Some years the season is so short they are only at the markets for two weeks. If you are really zoned in and with connections you can organize getting a couple of flats to freeze some but that kind of focus for me is for green things (snap peas, asparagus, romano beans), not fruit. ![]()
Which is why I go with a bag of Wyman’s frozen wild blueberries. And HELLO! I am now aware that BJ’s Wholesale Club carries a 4-lb. bag of them!
Costco does too
Costco is further away from me than several BJ’s, so…
For some reason, I just never thought to look in BJs for some things. But it’s been added to my next shopping list!
Yep, that looks like wimberries.
Sending love and support from afar. hugs
This ended up being tonight’s dinner. Forgot I had a work lunch yesterday, and I wasn’t hungry at dinner, so held off until tonight. So I’m probably pushing the halibut to Friday night.
Made a half recipe using ground lamb instead of beef (although I still used a full half lb of the lamb). Also added a half portion of leftover cooked spaghetti at the end to get it out of my fridge.
Hi everyone
Boo to weather that was back in the 40s, then 80, and now wet and back to 40s-50s for the next week or so. Blargh. Maybe I should be happy that my replacement winter coat is getting some use, but I’d rather have sun and warmth!
More meals out last week than intended, some due to visitors, and some due to friends, though all delicious, and with people with whom I always want more time. There was Spanish, sushi, and Korean bar food (that was much better than that sounds).
I did finally make dough for puri / bhatura to go with the chickpeas I made twice the previous week, but then used the rest of the dough to make stuffed parathas — of all the fussy things in the world to make to use up extra dough (because I am a weirdo who doesn’t actually like puris much, other than with very specific things like chickpeas).
This week, I’d like to use up some ingredients that I was excited about but got relegated to the freezer when I didn’t get to them – salmon strips, chicken, ahi tuna, and mussels, for starters. Also keeping up on my yogurt / kefir and legume consumption goals.
I finally got around to starting a new loaf of no-knead bread, which I’ll bake before the weekend. And I might bake something for my friend’s kid who’s in town for the week – I had swiss roll on my mind, but a loaf cake of some sort might make more sense for him to take home.
Wishing you all a calm week with delicious meals.
.
Actuals last week:
— Ethiopian goat stew / Fayal Kikil + Gomen / Spinach with onion and ginger from COTM Ethiopia
— Paratha stuffed with ricotta, potato, and herbs + onion raita
— Chhole Bhatura (but Puri) / saucy chickpeas with fried puffy bread
— Snacky / tapas dinner of Codfish croquettes / Croquetas de Bacalao from COTM Jose Andres + stuffed mushrooms + tomato mozzarella salad
— More snacky stuff: Asparagus ricotta tartine + Roasted butternut squash with ricotta from COTM Serious Eats
— Lamb pulao + onion raita
— South Indian Tamarind Rice + Chickpea Sundal (salad)
Had that at a restaurant for the first time only a couple of weeks ago. Chickpeas were delish. Bread had puffed up nicely but was a bit oily as it hadnt been drained too well.
Greetings, People.
Gardening season is in full swing. Last week it was all about managing our summer vegetable production. This week it’s all about thinning fruit. In the culinary department, we’re currently harvesting spring in the form of fresh asparagus, spinach, kale, lettuce, and herbs. I have my eye on a rhubarb cake in the near future.
Cooking for two adults in the PNW:
FRI: Smoked tri-tip on the grill. Roasted asparagus.
SAT: Old school chicken tacos. Refries. Pico de gallo.
SUN: Lamb gozleme with spinach and feta. Cucumber salad.
MON: Kiolbasa on the grill. Pasta salad with spinach and sweet bell peppers.
TUE: Leftover pan pizza from the freezer. Green salad.
WED: Peri Peri chicken burgers on the grill. Convection-oven fries.
THUR: Lamb kofta. Pita wraps. Raita. Hummus. Greek salad.
sounds like a great week.
I think I’ll follow your lead and make lamb kofta tonight.
Last night/Wed:
Thai take-out chicken pad see ew, basil chicken, salad rolls and mango salad
Thu: lamb kofta, tomato pilaf, local Ontario asparagus
Fri: jalea, Peruvian fried fish, inspired by my lunch yesterday
Sat: steak
Sun: no idea, other than a nice cake from a bakery
Let’s see… as per usual, some plans shook out, others did not. We still managed to eat very well, like a reasonably spicy Indian shrimp curry with a fab raita that was still good & fiery after two weeks in the fridge (!), and a wonderful bowl of tonkotsu ramen last night.
Menu “planning” for two w̶i̶l̶d̶ ̶&̶ ̶c̶r̶a̶z̶y̶ mildly interesting adults continues for a couple more weeks in Happy Valley until we are finally back in Berlin ![]()
Tonight is TBD. I was going to make my heavenly tofu dish (easy, fast, delicious) but since we already had ASIAN last night I’ll have to check with my mister if he’s up for it. Our Asian markets also get roast duck delivered from NYC today, so we might splurge on that.
Tomorrow our good friends from the big bad city are in town briefly & were hoping to see us for drinks and/or dinner, so we’re having them & possibly another friend over for a scallop appetizer (seared, lemon zest, yadda yadda yadda) and probz a pasta puttanesca or some such. They can bring salad.
Saturday is graduation, so the town is full up with parents, and going out or ordering in will be impossible. It’s likely there will be a poker game, but peeps will have to fend for themselves as far as dinner is concerned. TBD
Sunday Maybe we finally thaw that BISO chicken breast that’s been lingering in the freezer forevah, and that I’ve been meaning to prepare Greek-style with lemon potatoes… or maybe we’ll make hot pot, as I recently discovered sliced lamb and beef in the freezer for this very purpose.
Monday is often boygah day @casa lingua, so why TF not?
Tuesday is a ladies night to belatedly celebrate one of our gal pal’s birthday, likely at our favorite watering hole.
Wednesday TBD
Happy cooking everyone. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead. Keep your loved ones close & eat all the good tings! ![]()
FRI - Halibut, leftover Basmati rice, and asparagus. Will probably do a lemon-pepper-garlic sauce with the halibut.
SAT - it’s gonna be ugly rainy all day - of course on my Errand Day. So comfort food will be in order: my baked Mac & Ham & Cheese. Salad.
SUN - roasted BISO chicken breast. Will soak it overnight in buttermilk, garlic powder, paprika, s/p, cayenne, Italian seasoning blend or some other dried herb in my cabinets (and I NEED to remember to add more spices than I think I should to get some oomphy flavoring in there!). Not sure on the veg - maybe roasted baby potatoes and whatever green veg is in my crisper (or I buy tomorrow).
MON - leftovers
TUES - ?
WED - Shrimp stir-fry - probably with sugar snap peas, onions, red bell peppers
THURS - had plans to go to Brimfield this day with my sister, BUT the weather looks like it’s going to be (YET AGAIN) mucky rainy for both Thurs & Fri. So maybe something Pork-alicious.
The giant bhaturas are always a bit oily, tbh. But it’s only an occasional indulgence.
Hi, all! Cooking for 2 in Chattanooga.
Breakfast: Tahini carrot muffins
Saturday, May 9: Orzotto with sausage and broccoli rabe
Sunday: Corn bisque, homemade crisp bread, mango coconut tapioca pudding
Tuesday: Ricotta and spinach egg bites (which will also make a great plane snack)
The rest of the week will be spent in Ottawa, where my sister will be participating in an insane athletic event and we will get together with Ottawa Opera Diva and another WMP pal ![]()
I hope everyone gets some lovely spring weather and some good meals even as times are tough for many of you all. Hang in there and happy cooking!
