I think those kinds of topics if well defined, could be good but I would put it all on one thread, not one for each book or author. For the same reason you like to use the Good Eats NYC thread for all your NY talking LOL. And there is much less activity on Cotm than on NY food.
The difference is that book threads live on, so lumping 3 books is a bit of a disservice.
The current COTM has been pretty active, and selecting something that appeals to those who want to participate will keep us going next quarter too.
I am all for revisiting some of those old COTMs from Chowhound. My cooking skills have improved quite a bit since the early days, and I could probably do a lot more with some of those books than I could have when we cooked from them the first time (although I have a lot less interest in spending all my spare time cooking these days). If people want to do something like that, I am fine with it. But I think I would personally prefer to do it as one old COTM book at a time as one of the 3 COTMs. Does this make sense?
In fact, I will go ahead and nominate FISH WITHOUT A DOUBT. We really loved this book.
FISH WITHOUT A DOUBT sounds good to me
I could definitely revisit FISH WITHOUT A DOUBT.
YES I agree about FISH WITHOUT A DOUBT. I could benefit from pulling it out and for that matter PULPO.
POLPO is a great book. I’d love a revisit.
HI Lulu’s Mom! It’s DKennedy from Chowhound. I just found this site and I am bummed I didn’t know about it sooner! I am having trouble figuring out how to bookmark etc. but I will spend some time on the site and will soon be a frequent poster. In the meantime…
I will nominate KISMET. It is my new obsession and I think everyone should know about it.
So good to see you here! I see your reports sometimes on EYB, and have wondered how you’re doing. Lulu started college this year - I remember when you were recommending fairy books when she was totally obsessed with them.
One thing that helps is the “watching” button on the bottom of the page. You can click the top option on that and it will let you know whenever there is a response to the thread. I hope that you’ll cook along with us. So good to have you back.
Welcome back, DKennedy! So good to have you join us! I’ve missed you.
Wow LLM! My youngest is just graduating from a one year graduate program in London. Isn’t that where you are based? I will be in London January 18th to the 23rd for her graduation. And looks like she is planning on staying so probably pretty frequently thereafter. Where is Lulu attending college?
Congratulations to your child! London is fantastic, but we are not based there. We’re in Chapel Hill NC… Lulu is going to college in NH.
Only 3 days left to nominate, so please get in any last minute ideas!
Will a link be posted for a voting thread as was the practice on CH or is a winner just declared?
(post deleted by author)
Actually we won’t have a voting round (sorry if this isn’t clear from the original post). The idea is that whichever books or websites get the most nominations will be chosen - whichever are the most nominated 2 or 3, depending on what makes sense given the nominations, will be the ones we cook from. The nomination thread is sort of a free for all with the top nominees getting the nod. So please add in any nominations posts before Sunday morning.
Thanks for clarifying LLM. I wish there was a place I could go on this site to catch myself up. To learn how this site came to be, how you all found it, and how everything works this time around. I am sure I will catch on. I just tried doing a deep dive on the CH bye bye thread, but I think 2 plus years later it is a bit foggy to me.
This site was one of a couple founded in the wake of the big CH site redesign in 2014 that made so many people unhappy. When the CH shutdown was announced, we started discussing what to do about COTM, and decided to port it over here. As you’ve probably seen, several other recurring features, like What Are You Baking and Baking COTM, among others, also made the leap, as did a lot of former users looking for their new forum home.
As far as how things work, I believe there are some explanatory threads in the Site Talk section.
Hello and welcome here @chowhounddkennedy1!
The site takes a bit of getting used to, but is much easier to navigate than Chowhound was. The search function, for example, is vastly better.
You already found the bye bye CH thread, and there are a bunch of similar others, though some of them are just rants so I’m not sure they’re particularly useful
There’s a site topics section, but if you have questions about doing something, feel free to start a new thread to ask, and you’ll get pretty quick answers from someone or other!
Here are some familiar CH topics that exist here:
COTM (now quarterly)
DOTM (also quarterly)
Weekly menu planning
WFD
Monthly Baking
BCOTQ
And some different but similar ones:
Cuisine of the Quarter
Non-baked things (doughs, desserts)
There are also busy seasonal threads like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and whatever else anyone decides would be fun
Holiday Treats
Thanksgiving thread
Christmas thread
Holiday leftovers
Snafus and disasters
