Can’t have the various Holidays threads without an accompanying one for the oopsies!
OK, here’s my mishap, not too awful but coulda been.
I was mixing a big bowl of stuffing and to the side were 2 cups – one with toasted walnuts to add, and one with my morning coffee. Without thinking (OBVIOUSLY) I tossed about 1/2 cup of black coffee into the mix. Here’s what I’m thankful for – nobody noticed! Also thanks for the assertive flavors of sage thyme etc.
We had a non-traditional T-day dinner for two:
The eye of round pot roast failed…just too tough after the low and slow in the dutch oven. The gravy was great because of all the veggies in the pot.
The acorn squash must have been too old— just too tough.
The pumpkin pie I bought (Craven brand-- it was all the store had) because I had been making pumpkin bread all week, was weird. I think it had been defrosted, shaken up and refrozen before I bought it. Lots of filling all over the crust and on the inside of the plastic seal.
Turkey is on reduction sale this week. I will pick up a few breasts, sous vide them, freeze and use in the future.
Sorry on the double whammy of beef and squash!
( don’t know if you have any interest in salvaging the beef, but I have ground up meat into kababs to save them, worked well)
I bet the coffee actually added a nice flavor note to the stuffing (a certain je ne sais quoi )
The deer friends will gobble up the squash and the roast is getting cut up up for a long simmered curry or something in the future.
I’m looking forward to a tender rib roast soon.
Only minor mishaps for this year’s T-Day.
My timed checklist includes “put on nicer shirt, brush hair again” that’s supposed to happen before any guests arrive or certainly before we all sit down for dinner. Missed entirely. Good thing my cooking shirt was one of my better ones and the hairspray seemed to hold thru multiple bows to the open oven.
I used a commercial pastry for the pumpkin pie, a frozen disk you thaw and roll out yourself. I made the pie a day ahead and refrigerated it overnight. I thought results were fine but my husband noticed “something was different, not quite right”. Guess he prefers my pie crusts. Who knew?!
Sorry for your multiple problems. What did you finally end up eating?
Oh we ate through some of the roast, the mashed potatoes, the roasted veggies, the great gravy. The weird pie with whipped cream was edible. There was one smallnpiece with a little gravy leftover that I had today. It was the bestest gravy I’ve ever made, I think. Some of us had the turkey thing on Tuesday night. We were not planning on a traditional Thanksgiving this year. I cut up the roast today into cubes to stew later.
