I only learned of this site when CH announced it was shutting down. It was mentioned in a thread so I checked it out.
The nomination period ends tomorrow. We have a clear winner in Smitten Kitchen’s books and website, but there are a few that are vying for the next spot. If you haven’t already nominated one of these (Sabrina Ghayour, Nigella, Bayless, Alford/Duguid, or Fish without a Doubt) and are interested, now is the time to make your feelings known. If we end up with a tie, I will put up a voting post for 2nd (and 3rd??) place.
I am happy to see this amount of interest in COTM. These threads are kind of on life support right now, and we’re hoping that we can get enough interest to keep them going, so please do pick something you feel you’ll really be able to cook from at some point in the coming three months.
Greetings! Have you seen this thread?
All great selections!
I’ve only made a couple of things from Smitten Kitchen, and mostly older ones where she picked difficult things and then explained how she stumbled and what turned it around. (For eg Thomas Keller’s deep quiche, which I love and I would never have tried otherwise.)
Of the others, I’d be happy to explore any, though I’d be partial to Sabrina Ghayour as I have at least one of her books on kindle via sale, and there’s always one on sale if someone wants to pick one up, plus she has recipes available online too. Also a different flavor profile than SK.
She’s a bit unknown for the North American audience, but that might be a good thing.
I loved Rick Moonen on Top Chef but Fish Without a Doubt might be harder to find for those who don’t already own it or want to borrow it from the library.
Nigella to me seems like it would be better saved for next quarter as the easy / popular grouping for people to join in on — rather than doubling it up with SK, which has similar appeal.
I enjoyed the Bayless books when they were COTM, but there was so much enthusiasm for Pati Jinich with such little participation that it gives me pause.
Those are all my feelings. Plus that I’m hopeful and excited for COTM after the busy quarter we have had!
I love Nigella, and have the same feelings about having her recipes at the same time as Smitten Kitchen. Would love to save her for the next round, but if everyone wants both at the same time, so be it. Otherwise they all seem like excellent choices.
I feel like I am too new to the site to weigh in. I will likely cook from whichever book is selected as I own books by most if not all the contenders. None of them are jumping out at me. I am sad to hear the COTM is on life support having just rediscovered it!!! Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions on how I figure out the site. I have some reading to do.
Thanks Caitlin!
One thing to keep in mind is that we will have 2, possibly 3, books/websites to cook from, and that we’ll have 3 months in which to do so.
I think we need more people visiting this site.
(I was walker on CH)
It looks like we have a tie for our second book and/or website. So I am setting up a poll below. Please vote for the one that you are most interested in and feel you are most likely to cook from. The vote will close at noon on Jan. 1st. Let’s have some fun!
- Sabrina Ghayour, includes all her books and website
- Nigella Lawson, includes her books and website
- Rick Bayless, includes all his books and website
- Alford/Duguid, includes all their books (I’m not seeing a website)
- Fish without a Doubt
I like the poll.
Two Sabrina Ghayour books are currently discounted on Kimdle: Flavour is $1.99, and Sirocco is $4.99.
Thanks Caitlin. Bought Flavour.
Thanks Caitlyn. I bought Flavour too.
I just bought Flavour three.
bought Flavour a couple weeks ago. Maybe we can get to Sabrina G on an upcoming month if not now
BUMP!
Looks like a tie.
Does anyone who voted for Fish or Nigella want to switch votes to one of the tied (2nd place) options (Bayless or Ghayour)?
Remember Smitten Kitchen is set as the first choice already, we are choosing the 2nd author via the poll.
I’m going to second what Saregama said, is there any way we can get one of you FWaD or Nigella voters to change your vote and break the tie?
Yikes, looks like I caused the tie – I just immediately liked what I saw in the Sabrina G. book. (And almost the first thing I saw was Nigella’s enthusiastic endorsement of same book.)
I don’t vote any more because I am unreliable about cooking but I just bought the Kindle version of Flavour by Ghayour and I am sure to cook something from it in the next couple of months, so could vote if that helps.
