Winter Holiday Celebrations — Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year, plus plus

(US) Thanksgiving is “late” this year (as you may have noticed from the atmospheric music that has been playing in stores for the past month plus to jump-start the shopping season).

What planning is afoot for holiday celebrations for the remainder of the year?

Special food? Drinks? Snacks & food gifts?

(May all your efforts be well-rewarded, but, just in case, the Mishaps thread is here )

2025 Leftovers thread is here

We’re going away for 4 nights over Xmas, so will be letting the hotel fuss about all that food. In the period before and after, I think we’ll just be having "normal " food.

Somewhere warm?

Nope. The “Lake District” in northwest England - a couple of hours drive north for us. Twice we’ve stayed in the winter. Twice we’ve ended up getting snowed in. Snow, log fires, lots of nice food cooked by someone else - just about a classic Christmas. I’ll have to write to Father Christmas to tell him we won’t be at home for his delivery.

What’s next week? Did I miss a winter holiday before Thxgiving?

Hehehe…no…just that I only rarely plan more than a few days in advance.

Next week is a trade show, so I actually do know what I’m doing for part of next week.

There are folks who plan ahead and like to chat about it, and there are those who aren’t.

Not everyone understands the point of a weekly menu planning thread, but it exists and it’s active :joy:.

(Nor the point of telling everyone what they ate for dinner or lunch or breakfast or even dessert, never mind all of those, but those are all active threads too :joy:.)

See you around Dec 18!

Day of the Dead is coming up soon. I guess it’s technically fall, but then again Thanksgiving, Saint Nicholas Day and St Lucia Day fall in the Fall, too!

I was thinking of making this for Halloween

Well, you already had your Thanksgiving, so I guess you’re not holding your breath for an American holiday — any more than the rest of the world is :joy:.

(Also, I forgot about Halloween till you mentioned it — which I will not share with my nephew whose favorite “holiday” it is )

Divali.

Lots of homes near me have had their exteriors decorated with many lights. Fantastic displays.

That was a few weeks ago, though. Our Indian restos had celebratory buffets, etc.

Welcome back, John! How was your vacay in Tenerife?

Lovely week. Good hotel. Warm weather. Nice eats (although nothing particuarly HO-worthy)

These are so darn cute. Little Pig buns for a lucky New Year.

Maybe I’ll bake Lussekatter for St Lucy’s Day and Lucky Piglets for NYD.

Thanksgiving is done, and so, miraculously, is my holiday gift shopping: earliest ever.

Thinking ahead to food for the holiday season to come, when the whole family will be together over (the kids’) winter break.

There will be latkes at some point, so I have to remember carry sour cream in a squirt pack (though if I forget, we’ll improvise).

Either Christmas eve or Boxing day will be our traditional dim sum feast (separate from Indian Chinese for another meal or two).

There will be mom’s roasted leg of lamb / kid (which goes fast between the first meal and sandwiches, and often makes a second appearance before the first wave of departures), her cauliflower cheese, and both favorite biryanis – her homemade and our other favorite restaurant version.

I think we’ll have everyone together for New Year’s Eve for a change, so we’ll need to figure out something festive for that. Haven’t gotten to that part yet.

Mac & cheese at Thanksgiving was decadent and delicious and will be on the menu, with my nephews leading the prep (they made it for their Friendsgiving with some advance consultation about saucing). They are curious about the pasta soaking method, so it will be a bit of fun experimentation for them.

I’ll also carry fondue mix for one evening for all the fondue lovers (all except 2 of us), and assorted charcuterie.

Have to make a list of what I need to buy and carry food-wise.
