What's for Dinner #47 - the Halfway Through The Year Edition - July 2019

Did you make these?

I went through a phase of stuffing rotisserie chicken and Peking duck fixings into various wrappers!

Mrs. P made a fabulous dinner for July 4th :yum: We started off with an appetizer of fresh roasted figs stuffed with blue cheese, pine nuts, and balsamic syrup. For an entree we had an unusual surf and turf of blackened filet mignon with a Cajun dry rub, topped with blue cheese, and a lobster mac and cheese with gruyere, smoked gouda, and parmigiano reggiano. It was a real cheeseapalooza :slightly_smiling_face: It all went great with a 2012 Valdez red zinfandel. For dessert she made cherry sorbet two ways; one with chocolate chips and the other with a sublime balsamic syrup and fresh homegrown basil.

Yes. “Chinese” pancakes are incredibly easy and fun. And yes, we enjoy creating many cross-cultural filled pancakes.

I know exactly what you mean. I do the same routine, stuffing myself with veggies and light food before the heavy food.

(Know such issue right now, it all burns off. Intermittent Fasting, meet China.)

@naf, I’ve met lots of foreigners in China who got overconfident with their translation apps. It can be quite hilarious, but we help them out eventually. For a meaningful conversation, it takes a lot of patience.

Kid took a late afternoon nap and woke up around 10:30PM. I said go to sleep, please. She said I’m hungry. I took her out. We see this cart from a distance and I’m thinking it’s too early to take advantage of my child’s iron stomach. We walked around and some guys from a restaurant surrounded us. I used to get nervous when this happened before, but they are just trying to get you to eat at their restaurant. (And I realized being from Baltimore, this is nothing.) We told them we’re just taking a walk and they left us alone. We headed back to the cart and ordered mushrooms and this spiral shaped thing which they described as being like noodles. They fried the mushrooms and topped them with cumin. The spiral things were basted in some sort of reddish sauce. It looked like the sauce was packing chili heat but they assured us it was not. The spiral was grilled and also topped with cumin. I took a few nibbles. The kid finished them. She said the spiral had no flavor of it’s own, just from what it was basted and topped with. The mushrooms were great like fried mushrooms are, of course.

@Saregama, you might appreciate this. We went straight from the airport to the house of the family whose son is getting married. Two boys there were watching a Bollywood film with Chinese subtitles. My kid can’t read Chinese that well, but Hindi/Urdu is no problem. The subtitles must have been incomplete because they kept asking my kid to explain what was happening.

Thanks @PHREDDY! Yes, there is nothing like fresh figs with blue cheese, balsamic, and pine nuts (except wrapping them in bacon) :grinning:

My father took me to Williamsburg VA for my 8th birthday, and we got to see a live outdoor performance of the 1812 overture with real cannons!

made pan fried pork chop ( thin quick fry) for son after marinading in soy sauce, cider vinegar, grated ginger, crushed garlic, sesame oil , five spice powder and rice wine. Dusted with sweet potato starch, fried for just a few minutes, paired it with cucumber in soy sauce, cider vinegar, mirin, sesame oil, S/P and shared my dinner which was made with precooked vegetable rotini, that was added to bursting cherry tomato ( cooked in olive oil and lots of garlic tll they released their flavor when burst), added slices of green tomatoes and zucchini, herbs, then served with freshly reggiano parmesan and Kirkland’s pesto. Did nto take photo of his pork chop as he started to eat while I was still cooking the pasta.

I feel the feelings for you on this. My husband and I have a friendship like this with our neighbor, and it’s among the most treasured relationships we’ve had in our lives.

May you enjoy many more chocolate chip cookies together. A fine dinner indeed.
