and they’re the simplest! so much homey delicious bang for your buck, with so little effort!
I’ve had my eye on the Minorcan Clam Chowder. How did you like it? What peppers did you use? It looks great and so does the cornbread.
Pizza!
Since we are joking about rice now, I’ll add one to the mix. My older son who is in college, is always texting us about very random things. Recently there have been two strings of texts all about how his rice cooker is failing him for reasons, he doesn’t understand. The last time he said it wouldn’t work and then he tinkered with it and then finally did work and so everything is good. To which I of course, replied “rice-is averted.” I will bow and leave the stage now.
I used datil pepper powder which I ordered on-line. We thought the chowder was good, but not earth shattering.
I’m glad to have found and tried the datil peppers, and will be using that spice again. I’ll also stick with making spicy chowder, but probably won’t be making this version verbatim again. It wasn’t bad, just not exceptional.
Thanks! I found this on Amazon, but it’s $11.95 for 2 ounces. Is that what you paid? I will attempt to make a better spicy chowder!
Orange Datil Chili Pepper Powder by Magic Plant –
Yes - that was the price and it was “ouch”! At least I have a friend with whom to split the product.
My favorite spicy chowder thus far is one I stumbled on to. I was making a regular New England style chowder, and decided to pile some leftover Camarones Arandeados (MilkStreet) on top. It was delicious, and is my current bar for spicy chowder. I wondered if the Minorcan version wouldn’t have improved with a drizzle of cream. We ate it all before I could try it.
Fried rice with broccoli, leftover jerk pork, aromatics, egg, garden chives. I was happy I was able to get some char on the broccoli but it still had a bit of crunch to it.
Yesterday: Lemon rice, cauliflower with peas, and dal fry from COTM 660 Curries, plus some steamed salmon on the side.
.
.
Tonight: Bihari mutton (goat) curry, dal fry, cauliflower with peas, and a whole wheat tortilla (because I am too lazy to find the chapatis in my freezer )
.
.
For dessert: A slice of a mini chocolate loaf cake experiment. Very chocolatey.
You might try some tamarind paste instead of tomato next time – it’s what my dad used in red chilli bharta (lemon juice in green chilli bharta).
Sauteed redfish with radishes in sage butter sauce. Extremely crispy broccolini because I left it in the oven to stay warm and it, like, cooked more. Still good! Like kale chips, only very skinny.
Roasted Chicken Thighs with Brussels Sprouts and Carrots - brussels sprouts, carrots and shallots get oven-roasted. You sear the chicken thighs on the skin site and then add it to the vegetables in the oven. Served with yoghurt mixed with dill and garlic.
Chili con carne and beans enchilada. Red enchilada sauce, extra sharp cheddar, sour cream, Tabasco chipotle sauce, cilantro. Avocado and radishes. For any of you who buy canned enchilada sauce, Old El Paso has added corn starch to theirs. It is terrible, like red gravy, it used to be my favorite. I’ll won’t be buying it again.
Catfish, crisp and juicy, and chips. The green sauce, mildly hot with cilantro and other herbs, is from our local pizza and cheese co-op, The Cheese Board. They used to have it in squeeze bottles, free for the pouring, but they started charging for it. The people a couple of tables away got some, but tossed it without even opening it. I rescued it from the trash bin without shame. I’ll be buying it from now on.
Noted for next time! Thanks!
Well, it’s been a rather exciting time for casa lingua since I last checked in. I was supposed to meet up with my gal pals at the beer garden late afternoon yesterday — bc we’d gone from Second PA Winter to August overnight, and it looked to be a nice, warm evening.
By the time I got to the brewery, ominous clouds had moved in. My friend and I didn’t think much of it and settled into the small barn building to be protected from the pretty strong winds. After two drinks I was getting peckish & made my way to the taco truck… which was packing up bc of the “impending severe thunderstorm.”
So, no food. Le Sigh. Smoke, then! That’ll fix it! We shared a cigarette in the increasingly nasty weather & decided to pay up and get out of there (it wasn’t even 7pm yet!). Alas, shit really started hitting the fan — thunder, lightning, very very frightening me — so we decided to wait out the worst. Lights were flickering on & off, all the peeps from the beer garden and patio had already found shelter inside, and it was a boisterous atmosphere. My PIC texted to inform me that we lost power, and that something had fallen on our BRAND-NEW roof. I saw no reason to return home & ordered another drink
Half hour later I still hadn’t heard back from my PIC & called. Texts weren’t going through. He’d gone over to our newly married friends to drop off our poker chips for the time we’re gone, and ended up staying. I made my way over there as well, and while we sat in the half dark with flashlights pointing to the ceiling, sipping prosecco, our friend roasted asparagus and made really delish salmon fettuccine*: gas stove FTW!
We left shortly afterwards and returned to our dark home. Not much to do there but talk Italy plans and hit the sack early.
We still have no power, and no idea when it will come back on again. All of downtown is out of power as well (several power lines and many trees down), so the OG locash for our second ladies night tonight may not be an option. We may host on our patio & fire up the solo stove, BYOB & F
Hoping that some of the food in our fridge & freezers can be salvaged
Currently on campus at my PIC’s office for wifi and charging our electronics. We were supposed to do laundry and clean today in anticipation of our departure Saturday, and give our house/cat sitter a tour. Guess we’ll be postponing that as well. Oy.
for those keeping track that means my poor PIC had to eat salmon two days in a row!*
**which at this point seems a minor sacrifice
UGH! How’s the roof? Have you been able to assess it?
