Pizza Express [multiple locations, UK]

Pizza Express is probably the most famous pizza chain in the UK, with many locations across the country. You can collect vouchers to spend here through a loyalty system run by grocery store chain Tesco. I had collected enough points to take my son to dinner here today, at the waterfront Gunwharf Quays location in Portsmouth. We were quickly seated as the restaurant was not too busy early on a Tuesday evening.

He wanted Mozzarella sticks to start. We wondered why they were sweet - turns outs they are drizzled with hot honey :

We each went for the ā€˜Romana’ pizza, which is a thin and crispy crust. I chose the ā€˜Calabrian Hot’, described as: ā€˜Spicy ’nduja pork sausage, pepperoni, red chillies, mozzarella and tomato, finished with hot honey, parsley and Gran Milano cheese’. I thought about asking them to serve the hot honey on the side but decided to just go with it. My son chose a ā€˜duo’ with half the pizza as ā€˜American Hot’ (pepperoni packed with paprika for a deep, smoky flavour, teamed up with mozzarella, tomato, hot green and jalapeƱo peppers) and the other half as ā€˜chicken and pancetta’ (pancetta, chicken, mozzarella, tomato, garlic, finished with parsley and Gran Milano cheese).

My Calabrian hot:

This was excellent. The crust almost charred, which I liked and a nice flop to the inner part of the slice. The hot honey didn’t overwhelm and was nicely balanced out by the spiciness of the nduja and sliced red chillies.

The ā€˜duo’:

I only tried a tiny sliver of the chicken half, which was nice. We couldn’t finish the pizzas and brought home a total of half a pizza worth.

Service was competent. The bill (with one non-alcoholic drink) came to £53 pounds, most of which I was able to pay with my vouchers. Very satisfying meal.

Oh wow that looks pretty great! Haven’t been to a pizza express in over 15 years… so much to choose from when I’m in London!

Some branches do live jazz (Central London, I think). The famous food critic Jay Rayner plays some sets at Pizza Express!

The are in India now too, and quite reliably decent.

Agree, they are reliably decent. I ate at the Pizza Express in Canterbury, of all places.

And now I’m craving pizza made by a restaurant, thanks to this post. Hahaha

I go back decades with Pizza Express - right back to the branch on London’s Wardour Street which was, I think, their second outlet. Always reliable. That is until last time we went, which was a few years back now. They’d significantly changed the menu and there seemed few dishes which were ā€œItalianā€ and what we did eat was really poor - we vowed not to return. I see that change must have been short-lived as there’s a return to ā€œproperā€ pizza.

Those look a lot better than the ones I tried in the early 90s! I recall buffet pizza with sweet corn and far less charred, floppier crusts. I would totally try those, though!

@Harters - if I was on Wardour Street, then it was Wong Kei. I believe it is still around!

My experience with Pizza express living in Oxford in 1994 was also pretty dreadful. But this current version looks like it’s leagues better than USA large pizza chains.
