What's for Dinner #107 - the Almost Sum-Sum-Summertime Edition - June 2024

thank you!
"I only discovered burrata last year. " Wow! Well now you have to make up for lost time!
the sausage was SO. GOOD. Especially doctored up with all that garlic and extra fennel.

Yeah - I don’t live in a diverse foodie environment. We live on outer Cape Cod. I call it the land of Fish & Chips. People come here to eat fresh seafood, so restaurants cater to that. It becomes one dimensional unless we travel out of our bubble (which is becoming less frequent as we age). Your meals always fascinate me.

Pork tenderloin, seared and roasted with a splash of beer, finished with bbq sauce. More corn riblets. Roasted beet, mandarin, avocado salad over a bed of little gem, citrus dressing and pistachios. Dressing was oo, mandarin juice and zest, sherry vinegar, honey, dejon, shallots.
Sangria.

We enjoyed some excellent takeout from Don Pepe ll, in Pine Brook NJ, including our usual favorites of twin seafood stuffed lobsters; Paella a la Valenciana; seafood stuffed avocados; crispy Spanish chips. Itnall went great with an espresso martini to start and an excellent Zinfandel. There was a ton of leftover paella for leftovers during the week.

I know I’m early posting the link for the new WFD thread, but I am expecting to be busy from the get-go tomorrow morning in the new office space…so you get it now.

Despite getting a really good night’s sleep last night and having a relaxing morning at home I was tired tonight. So I curled up on the sofa and ordered a pizza and watched a very exciting football game. The hometown boys won, scoring a field goal with 0 seconds on the clock.

I have a friend who loves Australian football. She has the appropriate streaming platform, and augments her viewing with carry out/delivery … and beer. Enjoy!

i totally get how it would become one-dimensional. I’ve often thought of visiting there, or the coast of Maine, purely for the seafood.

Thanks! i know how fortunate we are here in SF, much less California, to have such a wide variety of cuisines available to us.

I love watching Canadian football and i have been watching it since I was born. I’m old fashioned and sttill have cable tv and all our games are broadcast on tv. I missed having a beer tonight though. I will have to fix that.

I may have the bowl of salad, but my buddy across the street called dibs on the pasta — also we have breakfast fixins (2 eggs, some cheese, bread, etc. etc.) to finish!

And thank you, too, for your kind words :pray:t3:. My PIC keeps harping on just how much I write about food — here and elsewhere — without making any money for it.

I prefer to do it for fun

Squeezing in to document the last dinner of June: Empanadas from July COTM and tomatillo salsa. Both Pati Jinich recipes and both keepers. The tomatillos, chiles, and garlic were boiled rather than my usual roasting method

Your empanadas are gorgeous!

Last dinner of June was this pasta with the first CSA broccoli of the season, in a blue cheese pan sauce and topped with walnuts. One of my favorite flavor combinations.

This came together quickly, which was important because hacking down bittersweet in the yard earlier had taken a lot of energy. Bittersweet twines its way up into trees and kills them. So that’s gotta go. Needed this good meal after doing battle!

Going to check this out—interesting! I have tomatillos in the freezer that need using.

I think I’ve tried those “Wontons”
Blechy
Awful :persevere:

This is the brand we had last night (although not fully cooked, and a different flavor - pork and vegetable). Difficult to manage, as they all stuck together frozen, and then broke when I tried to pull them apart. Even unstuck and unbroken, they are difficult to pan-fry properly due to the small size. They come in a larger size, which (while not as good as homemade) at least is in a form which can be properly prepared. I don’t think I would buy either again, unless I was in dire straights for something quick.

I hear ya.
I really like the Ajinomoto Brand Gyoza when it comes to Frozen Dumplings.
Also we have quite a few Dumpling specific Restaurants that also sell their Dumplings frozen which have been the best in my opinion.
