Hope September is an improvement over last month. DH broke his ankle and was sent home un operated on by the ER. It took 3 weeks of being a squeaky wheel to finally get it done. August and Labor Day weekends are not a good time to need medical attention. Now he is comfortably resting casted and pain free in a skilled nursing facility I started planning what I would like to make and eat. So far I had cheeseburger and enormous Caesar salads two nights in a row because
I auto think two people. Fortunately the gas ran out so no more grilling. I made a lasagna with the addition of
grilled zucchini and that is leftover for tonight. I found a take out style chicken artichoke bake at Aldi and that was dinner for two nights with leftover rice from the freezer and frozen asparagus spears which were not awful. Our last meal as a couple was roast chicken another two for meal deal and now I have homemade chicken stock. I will make Silver Palate curry butternut squash soup with the stock tomorow. The remainder of the squash will be stuffed and baked with a sausage recipe a local farm posted. I’m treating my self to tea and Aldi cookies on the couch with my dogs. I went to my pharmacy this morning and got both vaccines I needed. I have never had any reaction but any excuse to do nothing after three weeks of nervously caring for DH should be rewarded. There will be wine with dinner.

Oh Ginny, I’m so sorry your husband’s surgery was delayed. Must have been so scary for both of you. It’s great he’s finally resting comfortably without pain and being cared for 24 hours a day so you don’t have to worry. I hope you can continue using this respite to treat and reward yourself! Wine, tea and cookies on the couch with your dogs, cooking things you want for yourself and maybe even getting take out!

Best wishes to both you and your DH for speedy recoveries!

Something was wrong with the duck legs. They were fowl. :sob:

Tuna cakes tonight (Tuesday. Tuesday was Tuna Day when I was growing up and often Tuna Casserole Day), Russian Salad, maybe cabbage soup or slaw.

Just popping in to give you a cyber hug. What a horrible situation. Glad you are treating yourself after having gone through it.

Oh, I’m so sorry about your husband’s ankle and the extra stress of having to push for appropriate care. But good on you for advocating for him! It’s not the same thing, but I walked around on a broken bone (one of the tiny bones in my foot) for several weeks in college because the orthopedist hadn’t caught the fracture on x-ray. At least you weren’t dealing with a student health center :joy:

Hopefully they weren’t from Farm Boy… I think you’ve mentioned elsewhere that you’ve bought their duck legs in the past. I tried them once last winter and they were very good.

The duck legs were Brome Lake Duck legs from Farm Boy in London. I have bought at least 2 dozen of these legs over the past 4 1/2 years.

I froze around 8 duck
legs when they were on sale in July. The sell-by date was still several days away.

I think there’s a problem with a few fellows working in the meat department at one of the 2 Farm Boy locations where I shop at in London. I haven’t had issues with the other location where I shop in London.

I haven’t bought any duck in Toronto or Ottawa Farm Boys.

I think this is the result of someone who isn’t doing his job properly.

Luckily, I can buy duck legs at Sanagan’s in Toronto.

That’s too bad. I live in downtown Ottawa and we have two Farm Boys in my neighbourhood - one on Metcalfe and one in the Rideau Centre. I usually shop at the one on Metcalfe mostly because I live down the street but also because their groceries are well stocked and they have a high turnover. The other one is not only in a mall but also near a train station (we have a commuter train in Ottawa) and tons of bus stops on nearby Rideau Street. Most people that shop at the Rideau Centre store tend to pop in to pick up dinner while transferring buses/train so the shoppers there tend to pick up ready made meals for dinner so I never know how long the meat or fish has been sitting there.

I buy about 40 percent of our groceries at Farm Boy. It’s just this one location, and the only issues in 4.5 years have been some live oysters, one pack of lamb and these duck legs. You win some, and you lose some.

Part of the reason I shop at the 2 locations in London is that they’re so empty compared to the nearby Loblaws and Sobeys. And they don’t have self-checkout.

The Farm Boy on Metcalfe in Ottawa was really nice. I stayed at the ARC Hotel on my last visit so that Farm Boy was nearby.

Greetings, People.

Back home from a 3-day road trip and we’re at that cross-roads where maybe garden veg will still coming in, and maybe not. Thus a lot of “TBD”s in the meal plan. On the upside, the fruit trees are producing, so at some point there are fruity pies, galettes, and cakes to look forward to.

Cooking for two adults in the PNW.

FRI: Milk Street’s Camarones Arondeados (chili shrimp). Coastal style rice. Veg TBD. (Apologies in advance for the paywall.)

SAT: Tuna melt – contemplating the addition of either potato chips or bacon, as I’ve been reading about each somewhere on the internet (most likely here on HO). Eric Greenspan’s tomato-basil soup (as introduced by @jammy).

SUN: Deep dish pizza + extra for leftovers (leftover pizza in the freezer = very convenient). Salad.

MON: ATK’s Japanese steak with summer squash and mushrooms (another paywall).

TUE: Pan roasted chicken breasts. Sweet potato fries. Veg TBD.

WED: Fish tacos – panko crusted halibut. Cabbage slaw and avocados.

THUR: Pork chops. NYT’s Creamy Mac and Cheese (gift link). Veg TBD.

Not sure what the marinade is on the Japanese steak, but this is a nice one too (have to add veggies to the mix)

Thanks for that. The ATK recipe has many of the same notes: butter, soy, garlic. I’ve summer squash to use up, and this will be a good use.

There is a garlic-soy marinade in Tadashi Ono’s The Japanese Grill which I adore. I’m assuming this will be similar.

Tonight:
Meatballs (influenced by you guys), not sure what type yet, other than beef. I might make Cambodian meatballs, which I haven’t made in close to 35 years. :joy:

Tomato gratin

A minimized take on Singapore slaw to use the cabbage in my fridge

Friday:
Salmon and some sides I’m preparing today for the Dining Companions.

I love plain potato chips on a tuna salad sandwich!

I think I would, too! Tuna salad sandwich with a side of chips is one of my favorite things.

That said, chips are kinda my kryptonite, so I don’t keep them around. DH doesn’t even like them, unless he makes them himself. So, as good as it sounds, I’m leaning towards the bacon version. For whatever reason, I can resist eating a lot of bacon (whereas a bag of chips wouldn’t last 10 minutes).
