Lunch 2024

They are quite tasty together. And the lime juice, mint and basil in the dressing really complemented the salad well.

Brisket with mac, pickled onions and pickles from a local 'cue popup operation at the Fishtown Fall Feastivale, which was pleasantly low-key due to an incessant drizzle

The brisket was very tender and had a nice amount of fat, but it was lacking smoke. The mac was rich but bland.

I had a Cajun street COTC that was unfortunately overcooked (“fire-roasted”),

but the dressing had a nice kick, and a delightful pickle from the Fishtown Pickle Project :yum:

I went to Cracker Barrel for the first time. I had heard about it/read about it for years but never lived anywhere near enough a location to try their food. But there are 2 here in Las Vegas and one of them isn’t too far from my sister’s home. I know it’s often quite crowded, so my sister and I went for a late lunch (about 2:30 PM) today. Thankfully, there was no wait at all.

I knew the menu would be large enough to make it difficult to choose, so I looked at it online before going.

I had heard their biscuits were especially good and as I love biscuits, I wanted to try them. And a natural accompaniment to biscuits is sausage or “country” gravy. This menu item is known as the “Sunrise Special” ($7.99) and comes with a choice of 2 grilled smoked sausage patties or bacon. The only place I could get sausage patties in Japan was at McDonald’s on their McMuffins or as part of the pancake breakfast. Bacon is different in Japan as well…more like grilled ham, not American crispy style. I chose the sausage patties to see what they’d be like.

Everything was surprisingly good. The biscuits were fluffy and not laden. The sausage gravy was light and thankfully not overly salty. As for the sausage, I think I much prefer a sage type of seasoned sausage as opposed to these smoked sausage ones. I hadn’t had anything to eat before this meal today and because of that, I didn’t feel stuffed at all…just like the Japanese say, to eat at 80% of your stomach’s capacity…which I did (I had water to drink.)

Looking around the country store was interesting, too. But other than an old-fashioned candy stick (sour green apple flavor), I didn’t buy anything.

I enjoyed my first visit to Cracker Barrel and would be open to visiting again.

Dang, I’m in for that!!

Glad that Vegas is working out for you so far, with your sister. I know you had your trepidations as to your new living arrangement last year.

I enjoy Cracker Barrel. There’s are some locations in Erie.

I usually alternate between Bob Evans and Cracker Barrel, which are both pretty common near Interstate junctions in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I think I got the chicken and dumplings on my last visit. I like their side dishes.

There was a Cracker Barrel thread on Chowhound.

“Working out” is a bit of a stretch, but we both try. I don’t mind the city as much as I thought I would, but the incessantly dry weather gets old fast. That being said, I’m not a fan of humid weather, either.

Lack of an ocean or any natural body of water is my least favorite aspect of the environment here.

My sister had the chicken and dumplings. She said the gravy was a bit thin for her taste, but the chicken and dumplings themselves were good. She also liked the side dishes she chose, a baked sweet potato and cole slaw.

Stores sell Bob Evans frozen food here, but there are no restaurants in Las Vegas. But as I like that kind of “stick to your ribs” food, I’d try one of their locations if I had the chance.

" CHAR SIU MANOR, Woodbine & 16th Ave, Markham " - Great find! A real neighbourhood hidden gem!!

Treating myself to a rare Cantonese Roasted Goose and half a Rose Wine Essence Premium Top Soya Sauce Free Range Chicken for the wife at this relatively new hidden gem, close to T&T!

Excellent product with authentic, exemplary seasoning. IMO, one of the best, if not the best Cantonese roasted meat joints in the area ( Richmond Hill/Markham ). Tough choice between ‘Excellent BBQ House’ inside Richlane Plaza and this place. CSM might win out by a whisker because of their cheaper price point!

BTW, though obviously, this ‘Canadian rendition’ Roasted Goose of mine fell short of some of Hong Kong’s finest. However, IMHO, for the rarity, the absolutely delectable spot-on ‘did-not-cut-corner’ marinade/seasoning, the resulting taste profile and the firmer, chewier ‘free-range’ texture of the meat…I have zero complaints!!

As for the chicken, it was the third time I got this perfectly executed and flavourful bird for the wife…need I say more?
