Lunch 2024

My friend from SC came down again today to see her daughter & a couple of mutual friends who moved down here about a decade ago (and whom I hadn’t seen since).

I’d suggested we all meet at the SEA market, not knowing that temps would be even cooler than yesterday (minus the drizzle at least) …. so, not really picnic weather :slightly_frowning_face:

Thankfully, food & company more than made up for it. My boo and I shared a few delicious lemongrass beef skewers,

a couple of pork spring rolls (not as good as Tabachoy’s) & fish cakes from the same place, which tasted like a soft version of kroepoek & very different from the tod mun pla I was expecting. I had high hopes for the Thai boat noodle soup from a stand where the woman was working 3 woks and a pot at the same time :open_mouth: :exploding_head:

The portion was incredibly generous for $16 — roughly half a pound of rice noodz, same amount of very tender beef, a few gai lan stalks, and about a quart of broth. I perused the condiment tray to adjust the heat level, but didn’t see any fish sauce or vinegar around. The broth was not as good as “my” Berlin soup lady’s, but as it seemed to get chillier over the course of the afternoon, at least it warmed us up :woman_shrugging:t3:

Our friends were happy with their stuffed chicken wings & som tam, basil-fried rice, and summer rolls.

It was nice to see everyone, and my gal pal even brought a bday card along from all my ladies, whom I’ll be missing for this years festivities :sparkling_heart:

No laughing or judging plz
Air Canada gave me €30 worth of vouchers to spend at “select restaurants “ , and this is what I chose
Wopper, fries and a large Coke took care of one of the €15 vouchers, the other one was spent on 4 bottles of water and a couple of pastries :croissant:
“Limited restaurants” didn’t give me much of a selection, but I think I did pretty well.
I wonder if I could/should have asked for better compensation from A/C, but I figured €30 was pretty good.
And King Dabiz looking down his nose at us plebes with such disgust. :joy: He’s kind of a big deal in the restaurant world here in Spain :es:

Definitely would recommend, even to add pineapple to a pulled pork sandwich.

The Chinese 5 spice in the Char Siu went nicely with the pineapple.

I had to google King Dabiz Muñoz.

You weren’t tempted by the Dabiz Angus Burger? That’s what I would have ordered. I just told my other Cyber BFF who is also in Spain this week to go try a King Dabiz burger before he comes back to Canada.

There is no such thing as dumbing down threads! As long as you ate food, it belongs here.

And wedge salads are my favourite and they are made with the humble iceberg lettuce and blue cheese dressing.

You always sniff out some really good Asian food.

Lunch today was another corn tomato salad using cherry tomatoes instead of field tomatoes which was a much better match. It was dressed with evoo, lime juice, mint and feta.

€30 on pastries sounds like a good investment to me :grinning:

So, which one did you get?

The King Dabiz 100% Angus or the King Dabiz Chicken?

I would totally hit the 100% Angus creation.

I don’t blame you. Ottawa (where I live) is a bit of a food dessert IMHO. Even though we have a population of a million people it has a small town feel to it. I’d love to incorporate more Indian dishes into my menus but there aren’t very many Indian grocers in Ottawa. We have one snall store in my downtown neighborhood but the fresh produce isn’t very fresh. Many of our Indian grocers seem to opening up in the west end since we’ve had a recent surge of Indians moving to the city and they seem to be settling in the west end. I don’t drive and our public transit stinks so I periodically make the 45 minute bus ride wesr to get my Indian groceries. We are fortunate to have a lot of Asian restaurants and grocers though and many within walking distance.

We have access to a few good to very good regional Chinese restos (Sichuan, Taiwanese, Xi’an) back in the boonz, but Viet, Thai, Korean, Indian are all pretty mediocre. I was a bit bummed to find out that the Indian food in Philly may also not be worth our while, but there’s Malaysian, Indonesian, Filipino, Viet, dim sum, etc. to check out, so that’ll keep us busy for a while

Neither, I got a Whopper, fries and a pop which cost 15 euros, which was half of my vouchers. 17 euros is 25.00 CAD, fekk that. I used the other voucher for much needed, and over priced, water and pastries.

Only got a couple, the rest was spent on 4 bottles of water.

$30 for an airport burger and a soda!!?? lol, no thanks   I needed overpriced water way more than I needed an overpriced burger from some celebrity chef with a bad haircut.
