Your Favorite Coffee Cup

We had neighbors who put coffee in their baby’s baby bottles. That weirded my mom out sumfin awful. I was a little kid and tried to make my case Me: " they even let their baby have it." Mom: “Dat ain’t right!”

Love the favorite one! Takes me back to the summer of Woodstock. While the hippies splashed in the mud, I commuted over 5 hours per day by foot and public transit to take extra classes at Columbia University. Once I arrived, first stop was a deli just outside the campus, for a donut, and coffee in the paper version of this cup.

Plumpy Nut, a high calorie/nutrient paste in a tube, is widely used in famine areas, to save starving children. In an interview, a rescue mission physician was asked about the danger of peanut allergies. Looking surprised at the query, she answered that none of the indigenous people she worked on are allergic to peanuts.

I loathe dark roast coffee but my yarning group used to meet there. After my favorite mug broke, I found a Starbucks mug on clearance there. The lip is not as thin and flared as that of the broken one, but has become my default mug. So many mugs - and even the current generation of Pyrex measuring cups - have drippy lips.

That’s a great story.

I reach for my Yeti mug because I tend to stop drinking in the middle of the cup sometimes and love that it’s still pretty hot when I get to it a bit later.

I don’t like the idea of drinking coffee out of metal, but I don’t think I can taste it. I’m convinced my taste buds are pretty average, and my nose is below average, which can be a curse or a gift.

Trader Joe’s makes a delicious and high quality quart of coffee ice cream.

All of this!!

I’ve been getting 5lbs for $45-50 from CoffeeBeanDirect.com. I also get Dallmayr Crema D’Oro from TJ Maxx anytime I see it for $12.99/lb.

I really like it.

Dark roast = Incinerated = Starbucks.

I have a few favorites - one is a pottery mug with blue glaze that my grandfather made when he worked at Dollywood. It’s a little small for coffee and has a chipped (by me) rim, and the “X” on the bottom indicates it was probably a second. But I keep it for sentimental reasons as I have very little of his, and I love that he was a man of many hobbies.

Another favorite is a cinched-waist mug I bought in Vermont from potter Jeremy Ayers. I love his stripped-down aesthetic, minimal forms and natural colors. It’s chipped, too, but a good size for lattés with a curved handle that feels lovely. For my birthday last year my husband commissioned 4 more mugs of a simpler straight-sided design that I also really like.

When I drink drip coffee or Americanos, I like to use small reen retro stoneware mugs I bought secondhand in Asheville. It’s a set of 8 or 10, I think, which is nice for entertaining. I like that these cups have a pleasant lip.

Pics to follow - on the road right now.

I hate cup/mug lips that cause me to drool. It’s great to find a cup or mug that “fits.”

We are Dave’s Coffee people and have a subscription to their medium roast “Blind Pig”. We’re just outside of Boston, so they are relatively local to us (Rhode Island).

This is therefore a treasure. Hold it and him close.

I don’t actually own this mug but I’ve been meaning to buy one. The last time I had coffee with one of my best friends, we went to a shop that served their coffee in Hasami porcelain with a natural finish. Coincidentally, being in Japan at the moment inspires me to search for one before heading home.

Oh my. This is beautiful. A friend of mine love Hasami porcelain. It has this “perfect” texture. Smooth enough, but you can still barely feel the grain.

I have no need for it, but I love this “Freudian sips” mug:

My therapist friend has one.

And a bonus, a pottery mug from a local business that went under. It’s just the perfect size and shape for lattés.

Beautiful collection and lovely history. Let’s hope no cat will push them off the counter.

Wish I had one anywhere near me. 3 hour trip from here. When i visit my mom, though, I always hit TJ.

What you described is exactly why I love it, in addition to the memory of my first encounter with it.
