Curried squash and (balcony) sorrel soup, with a boiled egg.
Dumpling salad? Which reminds me we haven’t heard from @ipsedixit in awhile…
Gimme.
The mediocre food trend continued today: my former colleague at Fulbright wanted to see us before we left the country, so we met up at a sushi place near her office. We’d met there before a couple of years ago, and when I tried to order sake sashimi I was told that they didn’t have any… um, ok. But they did have pre-cut salmon pieces to slap on nigiri
In any event, it was pretty bad again. I ordered har gow that came in gloopy, thick wrappers with a strange dipping sauce,
my butterfish nigiri were kind of falling apart, so I left the wet rice blobs and just ate the fish, and the salmon & avo maki were entirely unremarkable. I didn’t bother taking a pic.
My dood had a couple nigiri and some fried roll.
That said, it was nice to catch up — if only to commiserate the shit the program has to deal with for obvious reasons. Many a grant cancelled, etc. etc.
They do what they can with the (now mostly) German resources available to them.
Swung by one of the best coffee places in town for a very good galão afterwards.
Cold grilled chicken
Cake
Prednisone
Your dessert of cake is better than the chaser, but hopefully that chaser helps ease the sting!
Thank you!
I was instructed to take it at breakfast so it does not affect my sleep.
Same. But i only got it at lunch. So compromises were made.
Brioche pinwheels filled with ham/egg salad and sorrel. Tomatoes with assorted herbs from the garden and a half sour pickle.
Three berry tart with roasted plum gelato.
I was mistakenly sent a bag of einkorn flour instead of the grain berries. The lovely small business already has the whole berries en route for me, but now I have a very large bag of whole grain flour to deal with so I tried it in pasta. It’s definitely a firm dough to work with and needed more moisture than the usual 00 mix, but it cooks up nicely al dente and tastes good. I tossed the pasta with some ratatouille made with veggies that needed using and the result is quite delicious.
We picked up our friends at their hotel around noon and took them to our favorite weekly market (one final visit for us as well) for lunch. The fish griller was once again sold out entirely & in good spirits, so we bid him farewell until next summer, the gods willing.
My dude had already gotten in line at the Thai truck
for their dumplings when I discovered one of my absolute favorite Thai dishes, hoa muk pla.
They make a fantastic version of it, and I hadn’t had it in eons. Our friends had never heard of nor had the dish before either, so it was wonderful to introduce them to it and share it together.
The dumplings were fabulous as ever.
From there, we took them to the KaDeWe food emporium — always a fun thing to do with visitors, and they grabbed a pistachio croissant for dessert they enjoyed very much.
(not the pistachio croissant, but a decadent chocolate croissant I’d hoped they might get

We then made our way to the center, i.e. Potsdamer Platz, The Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe, Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag, then strolled down Unter den Linden up Friedrichstraße (another former border checkpoint) before making our way back to our hood…. where it was time to introduce them to one of Berlin’s iconic street foods: currywurst with fries, mayo & ketchup — extra-spicy, of course
This desperately called for an ice cream chaser from a popular and very good place en route to our pad / their hotel. My PIC and I chose gianduja with whole roasted hazelnuts & a hazelnut banana sorbet, a little light on the banana, unfortunately, but extremely creamy & delicious.
We’re now waiting for our other buddy to get in from Amsterdam so we can continue our culinary tour.
Pretty typical Saturday lunch/brunch.
Bacon/mushroom/grilled onion and Jarlsberg cheese, with a side of toasted sesame bagel.
We had the rest of the ham/egg salad with sorrel on brioche.
Mini cake filled with plum/raspberry, accompaniments include roasted apricot gelato, apricot sauce; roasted plum gelato, plum sauce, center section has strawberry sauce with diced nectarines.
Love the finger sandwiches - my favorite!
Thank you !Nice for a change!
