What's for lunch? (2025)

Thank you! Sometimes my tastiest salads are the impromptu ones  Hand pulled noodles sound good! Someone recently asked for hand pulled noodle recommendations on the Ottawa subreddit so now I’m getting a hankering for them. I have the post bookmarked and I have a staycation coming up so I will have to plan for a hand pulled noodle dinner while I’m off.

" Very Fair Chinese Seafood Restaurant, Milliken/Finch, Scarborough " - First revisit after a near 2 decades absence!

After an eye doctor appointment just down the road, my wife and I decided to go for an early-bird Dim Sum special brunch. The imposing facade of Very Fair caught our eyes whilst driving past it and we decided to give it a try.

At 10.00 am, a line was already forming at the reception area whilst the ginormous and brightly lite, front-of-house was near 100% packed! We were lucky to be seated at a rare, out of the way small table.

S, M and L size Dim Sum were priced at $5.47 across the board.

We ordered:

  • Baked Pineapple and BBQ pork buns ( They actually put small chunks of pineapple in the filling! The end product was nicely made, not too sweet and packed generously with juicy filling ).

  • Har Gow, steamed Shrimp Dumpling ( Current popular rendition featuring giant size morsels the size of a golf ball. Nicely seasoned, crunchy and juicy prawn filling but missing in winter bamboo shoots bits. Chewy, slightly thick skin. Overall, acceptable, better than average product )

  • Peanuts, Salted Pork Bones and ’ Cai-Yu ’ Sun dried fish Rice Congee ( 柴鱼花生粥 ). ( Impressive, excellent and flavourful product that was cooked from scratch and not using a ’ mother ’ generic rice congee base. A rare find these days! Pity fried crullers were not offered on the menu )

  • Deep fried savoury stuffed doughnut aka Ham-Shui-Gok. ( A touch greasy, otherwise an enjoyable ’ crunchy and chewy ’ product with generous, juicy diced pork and pickle filling )

  • Trio of Pan-Fried Savoury and Sweet Cakes - Traditional savoury Turnip, Sweet Water Chestnut and Chewy Ginger. ( All nicely executed and again with generous main ingredients! )

Though swarmed and extremely busy, our lady server was extremely polite, attentive and helpful!..another rarity!

Overall, a most surprising and enjoyable luncheon experience that is worthy of a return visit!

Lunch today was a tabouli using farro instead of bulgur because that’s the only grain I had keft and only a bit of it. Time to start replenishing my grains.

Apologies for the delay in responding. I wanted to wait until I concluded my visit. To answer your question, it was absolutely worth the trek. The visit was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. I’m too spent to go into detail, but your research will reveal several others who have written about this more eloquently than I can muster this morning after driving 650 miles home yesterday. I will add, I did almost step on a rattlesnake, which was an added experience I wasn’t expecting to have.

Thanks, I am even more inspired to go. Was there a storm during your visit?

I don’t think anyone has “rattlesnake” on their bingo card when they go for a walk. :joy:

Stracciatella, pistachio pesto & pistachio mortadella on sesame rolls (no access to the fab bread we had in Ortigia).

Not too shabby. Might try bufflo mozz next time. Less drip-drip-drippy.

We did not experience any storms during our stay. According to the caretaker who drives you back and forth to the property it’s not that common. I assure you, you won’t feel deprived if you don’t see lightning. We experienced several shifts in the weather throughout our 21 hour stay, we were fortunate enough to be on the grounds during a full moon and the profound quiet of the property coupled with an intentional lack of any modern distractions available (Radio, TV, Wi-Fi) forces you to confront your surroundings in a very direct manner.

Today’s take out lunch was fried chicken and mac 'n cheese from the take out counter at the grocery store. The chicken was dry and the mac 'n cheese had a gummy texture to it. I won’t be buying lunch there again.
