What's for lunch? (2025)

Sorrel salad from the pot on the terrace was the side salad to accompany the quiche.
Comté quiche with sautéed mushrooms/garlic/ Marsala topped with chervil. The quiche came about due to FOMO over all the pics of Bridges Restaurant’s lovely looking Comté quiche with chanterelles. The crust browned very nicely on the bottom and the custard was cooked on the money, I might add an additional yolk to the custard base next time. This is a definite do again.

Oh that is our kind of food. Lovely. Dh had surgery last week and his appetite is off so not much cooking here.

Such a nice combo with the sautéed mushrooms on top. I brushed a whisper of mustard on the frozen crust bottom prior to the custard. I used the steel blade of the Cuisinart to “grate” the cheese finely and then added half the milk to attempt to make it as smooth as possible. I didn’t want the cheese to migrate to the bottom of the custard and it didn’t.
Hopefully, your DH will be back to enjoying your good cooking in a short time.

Today is my first day of a roadtrip to Tuscon AZ to see what this UNESCO food heritage designation is all about. (I’m a big fan of Sonoran cuisine). On the way, another roadtrip favorite is a renowned burger joint if it’s possible. So I stopped off in Tempe to have the Tijuana Torpedo burger from Chuckbox. It’s a made-to-order patty on a mesquite grill with pepper jack cheese and roasted mild green chiles. A LOT of green chiles. Condiment bar is self-serve. Excellent burger. Now on to the land of chimichangas and carne seca!

Wow, Google says Tucson is in fact the only Unesco food heritage site in the US.

We were in Tucson in February and tried Sonoran hot dogs for the first time at BK Carne Asada and Tacos on 1st. Loved them and the condiment bar - over the top! https://www.bktacos.com/

Summer Tomato Crostata made with Olive-Oil-Parmesan Crosata Dough. The dough was made in the blender and baked up nice and crunchy. There is a layer of ricotta, parmesan and mozzarella mixed with chive and not basil because this is what i have in my garden. Tomatoes were layered on top and brushed with olive oil infused with garlic. After baking a sprinkle of flakey salt and more chives. Delicious. Recipe is from a recent book I got. The Vegetable Eater and have many recipes bookmarket.

Devilishly spicy steamed Thai pork dumplings. I dream of these all year long.

My mid-day snack yesterday after hiking in Saguaro National Park in the morning. (From El Guero Canelo; An old friend highly recommended it to me and it was convenient to my hotel)

A rare lunch out, to Outback Steakhouse. He had a burger, I ordered grilled chicken which was far, far better than I’d expected - moist, nicely seasoned and with a superb BBQ sauce on the side. They just started offering a take-home-dinner for $10 special (“go out once, skip cooking twice”) so shrimp over fettuccine Alfredo came home and was WFD.

I looked up the restaurant, but I can’t tell what that is. A hot dog?

Looks to me like a Sammy Dog (double Sonoran hot dog).
