Ugh. That sucks major doodah. Hope the CT scan brings good news!
Burrata with olive oil, toasted fennel seeds, sumac, chopped parsley & preserved lemon. I was a little shy with the lemon (only diced up two thin slices) bc it seemed to damn salty, but I think the dish could’ve used just a little bit more. Tasty, tho. The toasted fennel seeds gave it a nice kronch.
Main was steamed dungeness crab with melted fancy butter from Vermont Creamery & just a squeeze o’lemon, and a salad with walnuts & blue cheese in walnut vinaigrette.
I had…one of those days. So, delivery from a local Mexican place (no pics) and lots of wine. Sometimes, self care is the best care.
Pan-fried Alaskan halibut filets. Twice-cooked spuds browned in duck fat. Roasted garden asparagus. Lemony mayo and dill butter.
I’ll be real with you and say I’ve had a shit five years (dad, grandma, and a good friend). It DOES get better but not without occasional challenges. The important thing is to enjoy the memories, especially if that person was a food lover. Cook a meal they enjoyed. It heals. And also, everyone goes through the grieving process at their own pace. There’s no timetable for when you’ll reach the stages but you will get there. In the meantime, lean on your friends and fellow HO’s for support.
Huevos rancheros - tostada, refried black beans, fried egg, and salsa (Roma tomato, Serrano pepper, garlic, white onion, and salt, blended until puréed and then fried slightly).
BF made stuffed portabella mushrooms tonight, with just some seasoned panko, parsley, and a bit of parm regg. super juicy! they shrink up quite a bit so we each could have had two. On the side: sauteed zucchini, roasted garlic, and a little tomato salad.
Symmetry! Nice.
After a LONG hiatus, wfd tonight was a blt/caprese bar. In other words, one could go either way. There were garlic toasts, bacon, lettuce and basil, mayo and balsamic glaze, fresh mozz and some chopped cherry tomatoes. It was well received, spring-y, and messy. And a pie for dessert. More on the dessert page.

I haven’t had a Barbera since a1982 camping trip in the Napa Valley. Sooooo good, I can still remember it! Mud baths were involved.
Fingers crossed it works out well!
I really enjoyed it! And, I’ve got some left to go with cheeseburgers this weekend!
So sorry for your loss!
Good luck!!!
Made the Soy Sauce Braised Mushroom Noodles from The Woks of Life again. Sometimes you just need a giant bowl of noodles! I used a combination of low sodium soy sauce and Maggi seasoning in place of the light and dark soy sauces. The color was less intense but we really enjoyed the flavor! Mushrooms were a mix of white button, shiitakes, maitakes, oyster, and dried morels. The liquid from rehydrating the morels was the base for the braising liquid. Noodles were a package of formerly fresh, store bought fettucine that I discovered in a freezer search. Worked fine. Great recipe! And we had homemade chile oil to spice things up as well!
A meatless meal for BF—huzzah! Hope he didn’t struggling too much.
Those noodles look delicious! And chili oil is my favourite food group. I’ve bookmarkthis recipe for a future dinner.
