What's For Dinner #74 - The Long "Fall Into Darkness, Warmth & Comfort" Edition - October 2021

I love the “pierogi” trick!

Gorgeous

Remember that potluck dinner party I went to last week? I came home with a few of the potatoes from my chicken dish, along with the extra sauce left in the container.

So - I added two pieces of chicken and made dinner out of it - so good!

My mom always described the difference in cooking “party food” and I never got it - lots of oil, heavy spicing, much more than you would ever use for home consumption. Well, this was my first foray in that direction, and so I had to spoon off the extra oil that rose to the top before I could eat

The minute I picked up one of the mussels. Big , weighty, beards on them like a civil war plumber. Tbougt these are going to be super. Yes they were and beyond. With clams , tomato , tiny bit of calabrian pepper , parsley. Cheers.

Lovely mussels !!

Cream of Green Asparagus Soup on a slightly chilly day … Note: There are no dairy ingredients in the soup. To provide the creaminess of the texture, it is a boiled potato. We reheat in Micro-wave !

Yeah, I know, but I broke the first egg and the second was so perfect I didn’t have the heart to poke it.

Is mussel porn allowed on this site? If not, you’re busted.

Aussies are velcro dogs. In addition to 2 pairs of human feet and 2 four-legged canines we also must dance with a half dozen squeaky toys they must have with them at all times…

Ha, you and I could be living in the same house.

Our velcro dog is a mutt, with Carolina dog and Lab figuring heavily in the mix. Oh, the squeaky toy carnage! Luckily doesn’t chew anything except the toys, her food, and our fingers (gently) because apparently we are tasty humans.

Might you share your bean sweetish ground beef bacon calico bean stew? I assume that you cooked the different types of beans separately first to get them to a canned bean softness first, and then used them in the recipe?

They really are. Impossible to sit or stand anywhere without one or other on top or adjacent.

Also incredibly expressive. I found myself having entire conversations - and arguments - with them while they cocked their heads and made sounds in response. I thought I was going nuts at one point, but no. It wasn’t just me - sometimes there would be little human translators with “I can’t believe you’re not listening to her” or “He keeps telling you and you’re ignoring him.”

I must also say that I have been afraid of dogs since being bitten when little (by my aunt’s idiot dog who knew me well), and they cured me of that. I miss them, I will even admit. Just adorable. Everyone knew I had completely caved when I started snuggling them by choice (mine, as opposed to theirs :joy:).

We’ve lived with the breed for 23 years. Not for everyone. Some of ours have been real talkers. They always get their point across. As pets, they’re very focused on their humans. Smart, loyal, problem-solvers but they color outside of the lines. I think that’s what we like about them the most…

I’ve had a similar idea for “pierogi” lasagna. Nice!

Catching up. Monday night I had a class (intro to sewing, LOL), so we quickly threw dinner together:

Bolognese ravioli with basil marinara and arugula salad with creamy artichoke dressing.

Last night, crescent-roll pot pie. I felt the topping didn’t do the homemade filling justice. Another salad.

Tonight, Grace Young’s beef with broccoli. Was underwhelmed. Maybe the carne picada I used wasn’t the best choice. But the sauce seemed lacking punch.

And evidently I’m a total pushover, because we made a quick pumpkin pie together at kiddo’s request.
