Takeout for kid (not sure I can call him that for much longer) birthday. Sadly disappointing on all counts, which has been the case the last two times from this otherwise favorite. Apparently the restaurant was full when we picked up - maybe they staffed down and didn’t staff back up yet?

Anyway. Dessert was homemade Black Forest cake (that approached disaster several times over but made it!)

Spent the night in Atlantic City for BF’s birthday. While we had a long list of bars and restaurants given to us by a friend who goes regularly and knows of a few non touristy spots, it was a debate of “To leave the resort grounds or not?” We stayed at the Tropicana. I had not been to AC in years and it was a day trip. Much was different than I remember. Much had not changed at all. Between the off-season and covid protocols, AC was not exactly buzzing 24 hours, but the vibes were not bad.

In the end, we did venture out and hit one locals-only bar for afternoon drinks and it was nice. Great atmosphere and such. But dinner was inside the casino at Cuba Libre. Since we had apps at various places throughout the day, we only got entrees here, and they were delicious. I had a perfectly cooked skirt steak with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and a watercress salad. BF had Ropa Vieja which he loved. Service was excellent. Oh and great cocktails too-- I tried the Rumrunner and a Caipirihna while he went for two of their many mojitos.

Lunch was a shared enormous portion of nachos at Casa Taco along with drinks. Because it is AC. Of course. In no other reality would I be doing a tequila flight at 1 PM.

Really wanted to hit local landmark restaurants Knife and Fork Inn and Tony’s, but it was “not in the cards”. However, the cards were good to me in other ways as I come home with more money than I took for gambling purposes. Not that much, as I still have to go to work tomorrow.

I have been endeavouring to eat less meat since Xmas. However a long week and a windy and chilly couple of days ,means something meaty and comforting and preferably easy was required. There was still some beef shin ragu in the freezer. Served with polenta packed full of butter and Parmesan

I made Mary Berry’s chicken “curry” after it was mentioned on the show Best Home Cook. I expected it would be mild and bland-ish, and it did not surprise. We replaced most of the chicken with steamed cauliflower as there was only a little bit of chicken leftover from the other night.

It was a The Last Of… dinner.

The last brioche roll.
The last 2 Gorton’s Crunchy Panko fish filets.
The last of the Lamb Weston fries.

Made a fish sandwich with a remoulade of mayo, Wickes Pickle Relish, horseradish and a smidge of seafood cocktail sauce.

No wine. And no, I’m not sick.

Would you buy those again and/or are those fillets a repeat purchase? I’m asking because I have been craving a fried fish sandwich and I wondered if those would scratch the itch.

Yes, I’ll buy them again. They’re not crunchy as if you had deep-fried them, but they have a nice crispy crunch when you cut into them with a fork.

that looks absolutely heavenly.

Tacos for a Friday night. Carnitas pulled from freezer, made an avocado crema (super easy: avo, sour cream, cilantro, onion, garlic, jalapeno & serrano chilies, lime juice, s&p, whizzed in the food processor.) I would like to be buried in this stuff please. Or folded into it. Fried the BF’s tortillas, charred mine. rice got a little crispalicious as i was playing a game of office bingo and let the rice sit for an extra 20 minutes. WHOOPSIE.

Oh your wine brings back such memories! My friends and I took a road trip through Napa maybe 20 years ago. Peju was a surprise visit and was one of our favorite stops. I don’t drink at all, so I didn’t sample, but my friends do and had a few sips. It was a great trip!
