What's For Dinner #60 - The Hot August Nights Edition - August 2020

The weather gods delivered us a “nice” day here in SE Michigan today. Low humidity and a temp that got to 74 and stayed there through about 6:30. So Mo Weber and me had a meet up. Michigan sweet corn on the coals (flipped, flipped, flipped), and beef burgers on the grill. Added field grown tomato wedges because I was craving them.

Power came back on as I was leaving for work. AC is blasting and I’m no longer cranky. Celebratory Chinese food is for dinner…with a couple of these.

A coworker who lives by the Edison NJ Costco (which sells liquor) picked up a bottle of their Kirkland French Import Vodka for me. It consistently ranks at the top of most vodka lists. I was always skeptical (“How good can Kirkland Vodka be???”), but no more. While produced at the same distillery as Grey Goose, this one comes in even smoother at a third of the price. Hell, its even smoother and more pleasing than Stoli (my go-to) and Tito’s (my other favorite). I’m really astounded…and that does not happen often. Goes down like water!

@NotJrvedivici you ever have Kirkland? I can’t get over how smooth it is.

Glad to hear you’ve got power back. We were lucky and never lost it though others in town are still without electricity.

I’ve heard good things about the Kirkland vodka but never had it. May have to take a ride up to Edison one of these days to hit up Costco (and maybe H Mart).

Most of my area is still without. My job in Atlantic Highlands was running on backup and no AC until it finally kicked on at around 2. Highlands and most of Middletown is out. I’m very thankful.

I may run up to Edison too for more, though my coworker insists she is there every week and will get me whatever I want. I have good coworkers! LOL

Her husband swears by their 20 year old Scotch which was only $80. That would probably fetch $150 or so from a name brand.

Wednesday’s theme must have been big salad. I followed in the footsteps of @shrinkrap and made a BLT salad (added bacon to our plates separately to crumble at will).

Salad was a perfect way to enjoy CSA lettuce that was as pretty as a bouquet.

Lovely evening for sitting in the garden. Plus we got our electricity back yesterday, thanks to the hard working repair crews!

I hope everything comes back sooner rather than later.

The randomness of outages has been very odd. Mr Bean has 2 offices, both “inland”. The Brick office lost power Tuesday morning but was backup before Wednesday morning, I think they are on the same grid as Ocean Medical Center and tend to get back on line quickly (they had power all through Sandy and the aftermath when everything around them didn’t). The other office, across the street from JSUMC, lost power yesterday.

You had to mention scotch - now I’m sure to get Mr Bean to take a ride with me to Edison.

Thanks for the entire view of your beautiful bowl @tomatotomato! It all looks perfectly lovely, and do I spy what looks to be a perfectly chilled bottle of rose?

I’ll take that bottle of Bombay off your hands if your bar gets too crowded @gcaggiano :cocktail::monkey: Glad you have power back and no longer have to deal with crankiness inducing heat. Sorry for your troubles with the storm.

Discerning eye, @Lambchop. The rosé is one of our summertime favorites, Riotor. More mineral than fruit, and dry rather than sweet.

Will have to give it a try, as I love a crisp, dry rose in summer, and thanks @tomatotomato.

Thank you for the inspired tip to add chinese sausage to kimchee fried rice! I wouldn’t have thought of it, but it’s brilliant!

Proof that I don’t always cook.

Gorton’s extra crispy fish filets with a seafood sauce/spicy plum & pomegranate sauce blend, leftover green beans and leftover mashed sweet potatoes reheated in the microwave.

Oh. There WAS wine.

OMG @LindaWhit, so glad I was sitting down with my wine when I read your post :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

A second gorgeous afternoon warranted another interlude with Mo Weber. The $9.01 I paid for the Ham Steak initially rocked my sensibilities, But boy, was it worth it! Crisped up some Michigan Russet potatoes directly on the coals, and added–of course, TPSTOB. DW slathered on Sour Cream on hers…

You opened the wine, that counts - that’s like half of cooking.

And it was strenuous twisting off the cap of the inexpensive but tasty bottle of white.
