WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I managed to avoid crappy delivery tonight - the last of some leftover pulled pork got turned into quesadillas. Hopefully this is the start of a new tradition because the delivery options near me are truly awful!
Take out/away!
Wednesday is my “I don’t want to think about what’s for dinner” night. Except what I want to think about it.
No more laziness. In laws arrived today for the holiday. So, wfd was a greek salad, falafel, warm pitas, and various TJ spreads like hummus, toum, and red pepper/eggplant. I also appreciate having a lighter vegetarian meal right before a big, indulgent meat meal.
Glad it’s not just me
Dinner was a new Filipino-Mexi fusion joint that started out as food trucks, for review. tasty stuff, burritos with twist. Pork sisig (pork shoulder here, instead of the traditional pig head) with garlic rice. It was supposed to have egg in it too but they got my order wrong. BF got the Cali burrito, which has fries inside. and an order of cheese fries - carb fest!.
I made the bacon green bean casserole for the homeless Thxgiving - just need to strew TJs fried onions on top, reheat, then drop off on my way to seester’s in a.m. very light (as in not drowning in it) thyme/mushroom bechamel with a little 3-cheese blend mixed in, turned out great.
Also made BF’s almond torte. a few snafus: bottom of my springform pan is warped so it sat unevenly in the collar. i thought the parchment paper at the bottom would keep it from spilling out but nope. So, it came out rather uneven. Also, my springform pan is bigger than what was called for so it also turned out rather flat. Smells divine, can’t wait to taste it.
I’m not chancing making a cheesecake with that warped pan, so holding off until the weekend for that.
Happy Thxgiving, everyone!
Sad to report a series of meal fails leading up to the holiday.
-
Pre-thanksgiving clean-out-freezer meatloaf at aunt’s. Not great - she makes great meatloaf, this was sadly not it. Toast later to compensate.
-
Takeout pizza at friend’s. Pizza guy took forever, pizza was cold and soggy, which made not-great pizza to begin with just awful. We were starving, so it was eaten. Lots of dessert after - two pies, a lemon olive oil cake I baked and carried,
-
Takeout “pan-asian” at aunt’s kids’ place. I know I’m spoiled in nyc, but this was a new low. Sushi was - I don’t know what. And they decided that combining that with chicken katsu and general tso’s (fat-battered sweet) chicken made for a cohesive meal.
I’m stress-baking brownies (after finishing my part of thanksgiving prep) just to erase the tastebud trauma
Looking forward to tomorrow!
Me too.
I am at my parents’ house for the holiday, along with my sister and her family. All in we are a total of 10. My parents’ house (my childhood home) is a tight squeeze and has a tiny kitchen, but we are making it work. Full house, tight squeeze, this is the stuff family holidays are made of.
Tonight I made dijon crusted salmon, roasted brussel sprouts, asparagus and steamed broccoli.
For prep, today i made the cranberry orange relish, my daughter made the cayenne whipped sweet potatoes, my sister did the mashed potatoes, my niece did the pumpkin pie and chopped all the apples for the apple pie, which she will bake with my son in the morning. I chopped all the ingredients for the sage, apple, sausage stuffing. I also assembled the breakfast strata which is ready to bake in the morning and the coffee maker is pre-loaded and ready to go.
I am so so very grateful for the time with family, and am appreciating so much all of our food traditions. We love to cook and eat together and this holiday brings some much together of how we bond.
I love seeing my kids with their cousins and grandparents – cooking, laughing and soaking it all in. This is what it’s all about.
so, i’m the last one in the house still awake, enjoying a quiet solitary glass of wine. in. tranquility.
i’m thrilled we were able to knock out a bunch of the prep today. My BIL will handle the turkey & gravy tomorrow and i’ll make the stuffing, green beans (with shallots, and my sister will do the green bean casserole if anyone is adamant that it must make an appearance. Woo hoo. calling it a night, Happy Thanksgiving to all.
That’s what it’s all about!
Was not all that hungry last night and eating solo. Dinner was a tin of sardines with sriracha
Solo diner as well for the next six nights.
Bento size. Enoki maki in teriyaki sauce; and
daikon + carrot + aburaage miso soup.
There is a saying that I learned in religious school , that translates to “Generation to Generation” Your day sounds like great goings on and you know it doesn’t get much better than that!
Happy Thanksgiving
A perfect ending to what sounds like a perfect pre-Thanksgiving prep day. Have a great day today, @MAH.
Thanksgiving dinner at my sister’s MIL’s house. Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, roasted sweet potatoes with cranberries and walnuts, stuffing muffins, schloopy cranberry sauce, and dinner rolls.
There were 5 pies: apple, pumpkin, blueberry, pecan, and key lime. (No picture)
And lots of wine and hugs. It was very enjoyable, but I’m glad to be home with my boyz.
I guess my thanksgiving was pretty tame compared to other members of HO
Spent thanksgiving with my older sister, who lives alone in McLean Va
Arrived the day prior with my 2 poms, cooked a favorite Chinese Christmas NY dish- abalone with mushroom and bok choy
Very happy with result although I am too cheap to buy Calmex brand abalone The last time I bought a can, it was around $100 and that was many many years ago when my uncle came to visit. Yesterday, I just bought the Roxy brand ( I checked 2 week ago, Calmex brand was around $130 , kept under lock at the Asian store) but I still think my dish was pretty good. Since my sister does not cook anymore ( she was diagnosed as having Parkinson’s a few years back, too bad for an International Steinway artist, of which there are around 1600, but she is the only one who holds the honor of being one strictly for her pedagogical work although she was initially trained as a concert pianist).
Huge Shitake mushrooms were rehydrated, the water squeezed out so that the mushroom can accept the sauces added. I used garlic , ginger, precaramelized onions, with Evoo, then added sauces ( oyster flavored sauce with scallops, hoisin, rice wine, chili sauce , Szechuan noodle soup sauce, ), just a little bit tame on the hot side purposely, then in went the bok choy stems, followed by leaf, home made vegetable broth , sweet potato starch to thicken the sauce slightly, then sesame oil. The stove was turned off, then to the still hot mixture, sliced abalone and the juice from the can. This was served with rice. I think it was absolutely fabulous even without using Caltex brand. To cook the abalone and juice is a pitfall ! My mom taught me that the canned abalone and broth would still taste soft and sweet if it is not cooked, just nuked by the hot mixture until last minute.
So, for thanksgiving, after breakfast of home made siomai ( 50% turkey m 50% shrimp), with favorite dips ( XO and chili crisp), my sister and I unload her brand new countertop oven. She no longer wants to use her oven as she is alone and purchased this small oven an air fryer, rotisserie oven ( Her Safeway store now refuse to deliver rotisserie chicken as they consider it from deli and so she has to go pay for it and bring it home rather have it delivered) . This cost $151.00 from Amazon.(https://www.amazon.com/GoWISE-USA-12-7-Quarts-Rotisserie-Dehydrator/dp/B07J6QQGFH/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=countertop+rotisserie+air+fryer&qid=1574990248&sr=8-6#)
So, we baked TJ’s Turkey Breast en croute , sweet potato with canned coconut milk and small amount fo demurer sugar, HT’s apple pie that took 60 minutes to bake.
It was good, simple ! no Fuss.
That sounds and looks great! How many did you cook for?
Do to the bombogenises storm that hit Tuesday. Guests wont be arriving. Oh well . Happy Thanksgiving. Elk steak , boiled potato, with cabbage. And a pstow . Cheers I’ll be dug out tomorrow.
Wow! I didn’t realize I missed THAT bullet! I think you are not so far from me, right? So sorry!
