Dinner in the city tonight. A new place for us, recommended by a chef at one of our regular places. He reckoned it’s the best Sichuan food he’s eaten in the city. It’s worth giving it a try even if they seem a bit unsure as to what type of restaurant they are - their main “thing” appears to be Korean BBQ (a cuisine with which we’re not familiar)

that is definitely worrisome - pick a genre and get good at it!

Hopefully you enjoyed one or other of the cuisines.

Pro-tip: Don’t wear anything you can’t put in the washing machine. Even with the best ventilation system you still come out smelling like smoke.

“A hundred years ago” we went to our first KBB. Tiny hole in the wall on Geary Street in San Francisco. Sweet waitress brought a dozen bowls of tidbits…which we heartily enjoyed while waiting for the main course. My, some were very strong or spicy but delicious.

Then she brought the brazier and meats. And nothing else. Because we had already eaten all of the condiments.

Ooops.

Today, it’s hard to imagine anyone’s being so callow. But we were. And this was a very new experience then.

We stuck with the Sichuan which had been recommended. The Korean BBQ and the hotpot seemed very much additions to the main menu - noted that none of the almost entirely East Asian clientele were doing either. Food was pleasant enough but we only need one Sichuan on our regular list and this wasnt better than our regular place.

Thanks @RedJim!

That’s a definite telltale sign.

Aw, shucks, thanks. Welcome!

Many places serve unlimited banchan as a sign of hospitality. It’s not unusual to snack on them waiting for the meal, esp when brought ahead. The weird thing in that situation is that she didn’t bring you a refill - not that you ate them!
