What's for Dinner #47 - the Halfway Through The Year Edition - July 2019

Tomato pie is one of my favorite dishes of all time. In my Eat Your Books account, I have 61 recipes for tomato pies, galettes, tortes, cobblers, tarts, tians, tortas, crostatas, cocas, Pissaladeieres, even one tomato cornmeal cake Napoleon…but Vivian Howard’s recipe is my current favorite.

I’m so jealous…of those Mallorcan olives, the villa, and the salami…

agree on the olives. I hated olives, mostly canned, even when I lived in Northern California, but then I lived in Spain for two years…now imported olives are widely available in my Boston area, for which I am very grateful!

have olives in a can as well as jar but son would not touch it
Buy occasionally different types from deli at grocery, he still does not like it. Not having lived in Spain, I would not know the difference. I specially like the ones stuffed with garlic , and coated with EVOO

Very very hot, am allergic ( contact dermatitis) to tomato plants and perhaps tomatoes?
Anyway, had just tomatoes with mayo and turkey breast with 2 microwaved ears of corn for dinner . Those purple tomatoes were delicious!!
Today, just made a large chicken salad. My version.
4 shredded chicken breast poached till 160 degrees with aromatics, 4 medium size Yukon gold potatoes cubed , 1 pound ( 6) gefren ready cooked beets, mayo to bind , sprinkled some beets powder ( I learned that from Presunto )
So, have enough for the next few days unless neighbor comes and join me

If someone told me they were serving Tomato Pie, I’d probably pass. However, after looking at your pictures, that looks delicious. Awesome crust!

Since your son has definite ideas about olives, he might want to cure some himself. We have great success with the instructions given here. Once he has the basic cured green olive, he can season it to his taste. Example.. I’m sure he has certain taste memories to guide him in seasonings. Olives are readily available in season online.. While we are able to source locally, friends in NY regularly get theirs shipped by one of these sellers. This would be a fun project for the two fo you.

also forgot I added 3 cans of fruit cocktail, drained

I am not sure where e can source olive but I wil make some suggestion. lt might be easier to sneak some in. He does bring in aged dutch cheese almost all the time.

I have found that customs people are rather generous in allowing personal use quantities of food items PROVIDING YOU DECLARE THEM. I was even cut off in my listing of food items at Global Entry last trip. He just snatched my entry ticket and welcomed us home. BUT we have been very sternly warned that not mentioning something questionable will be looked at as serious, more or less a breach of trust.
Too, processed olives should be quite allowable. Olives are not even listed on the USDA produce list. Of course, this is just my experience and opinion.

yes they are.
My husband missed his bacon when we used to frequent Amsterdam. We searched high and low for bacon but none was what he liked. Then, I found cooked bacon from Costco, just microwave with paper towel to absorb the grease. So, we would buy a package whenever we travel. Of course, since he had gluten enteropathy, I would prepare food for him during the trip as well. Custom was often sympathetic. Nowadays, my son’s GF travels back and forth and loves Asian Pear. I often pack her a couple to bring home, never had any problem. We still buy Costco’s cooked bacon for my son, very reasonable and easy to use. It was a life saver for me when husband was around.

I really miss bacon when I visit America. I really don’t enjoy the thin, fatty crispy strips over there and, these days, rarely order a breakfast with it.

On the other hand, we’re having a few days in Amsterdam shortly and I’m looking forward to the ham and cheese that forms the main part of a Dutch breakfast. I suppose it’s all a matter of what you’re used to, particularly when it comes to that important first meal of the day.

I guess it is what one is used to
my son’s dutch GF only wants liquidity yogurt for breakfast when she is here
I myself like a nice croissant , sometimes with eggs and now turkey bacon or sausage.

I made bacon fried rice with leftover brown rice, and topped it with homegrown kale salad in sesame dressing, homegrown cukes, lettuce, kimchi, fried egg, cilantro, and jalapeño. Hit the spot - DH loved it. Toddler…not so much. He doesn’t care for the texture of brown rice - or bacon!

Tonight, I made Penne al Salmone, a variation of the classic penne alla vodka. In place of vodka, I used a splash of cognac, which lent the dish a sweetness that was a nice foil to the smoked salmon.

Been playing around with a new / old grill. New to me but has some age on it. It’s a TEC infrared Sterling ll.

Ceramic burners that gets hotter than any grill I’ve ever had. Stainless steel grill. Just added a new igniter and pilot tube since I found a site to still get parts. Maybe new burners one day before they are no longer available

Paid about 1/10th what it would be new

Salmon filets tonight. Chicken thighs last night
