I hate when I try a new recipe for something I’ve made just fine before and it backfires. Such was tonight - Epicurious done me wrong. I know exactly how to make a gravy, and I also know it has no place in chicken piccata. I’m not really a fan of gravies anyway, so why the hell did i proceed? Where was my brown-buttery, light, lemony, caper sauce? Converted into gloop! FEH.
Alongside to save the day were the TJs fresh peas/onion/pancetta I made yesterday, and the BF’s roasted garlic potatoes.
Last night we shared this huge bone in porterhouse from the FM. Sorry for the raw meat pic, no one had a camera on hand when it came off the grill. Grilled with salt, then added pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice after it was off the grill. Sides were sautéed spinach and wine.
Tonight was a random chicken salad to use up a bunch of frig stuff, romaine, cilantro, tomatoes (raw and roasted), carrots, cheddar cheese, and some mustard marinated chicken. Plus wine.

I’m meticulous but can’t/won’t follow recipes. I cook by instinct. Always read the recipes and decide if they make sense to me. Recipes are only for ideas, in the end I do it my way.
Let them know it didn’t work for you. Maybe others have had the same experience.
I made a sausage/mix mushroom/onion/tomato/pasta concoction yesterday between work calls. Surprisingly, very tasty for lack of planning and attention. Cooking while working is not something I do often but sometimes it is needed. Yesterday, I had a late call and wouldn’t be able to lead that, make dinner and keep the little one busy. Just glad I did it and didn’t do takeout!
Very sage observation. At some point, we need to look at a recipe and say, “That’s NOT what I want to eat!” and go our own way.
My annoyance is the recipe that instructs you to do one thing and a accompanying picture that cannot possibly be the result of those instructions. I.e., cooking a piece of meat IN a sauce then showing unsauced meat sitting ATOP the sauce in the photo. Dang stylists!
