What's for Dinner #28 - 12/2017 - The Whatever Holiday Edition

Semi random finish perishables in the fridge meals last night and tonight.
I actually ran out of fresh veggies after wed pm dinner and that’s a dealbreaker for me, so i picked up a minimal amount- thurs pm i used a bunch of radishes to make a new to me recipe of pan seared radishes with miso butter (really delicious! ) and had that with the last bit of tempeh crumbled and sauteed and two clementines. Big mug of almond milk hot chocolate. Not adventurous enough to try the random asian snack of matcha brownies after a coworker who generally eats anything said they taste like brownies and lawn clippings had a baby.

Out early from work today and went to pick up the oh so important bagels to bring with me to CA! (I have done this since college and it’s just a given now that i will arrive with bagels. Most go to the freezer and they keep out just ehat will be toasted for breakfast the next day)
The bagels are huge, i just managed half of my sandwich of whole wheat everything with hummus and pickles and veggies (its amazing i swear).
So dinner was the other half of the bagel sandwich and some sugar snap peas. The rest of the sugar snap peas will come with as a plane snack since i want crunchy stuff when flying. The last few clementines will come with me but probably better to have on my layover than on the plane. I’ll have the last few bites of yogurt before leaving for the airport to settle my tummy. There’s freezer soup for when i get back since i will land really late and late delivery options in my area are limited.

Dinner tomorrow night with my family in CA!!

I have a Christmas elf. My sister . I have her shop for me and buys everything on Amazon and I pay extra for the gift wrapping. I am buying for 14 people and this makes it so much easier. And my nephew is the lead engineer at Amazon. Family discount.

Have a great trip home! Excess bagels can be sent my way
It was so hard driving through NYC this fall and not being able to stop for good bagels and Russ & daughters. Got to make a trip soon!

It’s good to be known as the wine drinker!

Haha… the cat mug :joy_cat:

@chowdom, the lamb leg is nicely done! I have been eating only game meats this autumn trying to take advantage of seasonal availability and sales. But I’m going to eat lamb again when I return from the holidays.

Not looking forward to paying 3% more in taxes on food in the new year! Bloody government!

Safe travels.

I would! Decided to make jewish liver pate later on today
Wanted to tie the gizzard to my poms but unfortunately, I had onions in my stock . Wander if one onion in the stock can cause anemia?

Crab cakes for dinner last night

It’s a single lady plus cats holiday weekend for me. I planned a hike today but the universe intervened to keep my butt on the couch - nagging foot pain I’m hoping isn’t a stress fracture plus snow. I hear you universe, let the holiday slothdom begin.

Dinner tonight will be the usual scotch eggs. I’m still debating Christmas Eve dinner either king crab legs or roasted lamb. Wishing everyone a happy holiday weekend.

Have fun in the Monterey Bay Area. The Dungeness crab are great this year. Had some last month when I was in Santa Cruz. I’ll be back in a couple weeks will get some more. Have a great Christmas

Looks FAB! What other ingredients are in these? I only see big crab flakes. That’s all I want in my crab cakes anyway!

Either choice of your dinner tomorrow is great. I wouldn’t be able to decide. Why not have a little of both? My eyes are bigger than my guts :innocent: Btw, as a fellow extreme introvert I would absolutely happy to stay inside the house with cats to recover, be it from the world or an injury. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Tonight was steamed halibut with Sichuan pepper oil and tamari (Japanese soya sauce). Greens were steamed sprouting broccoli (a hybrid veg).

Previous 2 simple meals. We ate everything in the fridge that needed to be eaten.
Last of the prawns and seaweed, flavoured with a spicy Sichuan sauce.

Busy day in the kitchen. Replenishing the freezer, smoking a cured ham steak for next week [and to get more room in the magic freezer,] prepping food for Christmas Eve dinner, and Christmas morning brunch. My feet are exhausted!

Dinner tonight was some freshly made chicken stock turned into a vegetable-chicken soup with noodles. Too hungry to take pictures.

Actually it looks like christmas dinner will just be the four of us (a few more at brunch) and will be some of the crab for a crab cobb salad with crusty bread. I actually don’t eat crab myself so mine will be marinated chickpeas or maybe tempeh

Very very looonnngg day of travel with less than ideal flights but i made it! My sister came by and dad opened the good bubbles, she has been going through a nasty separation from her business partner but as of last night it’s finalized and she is the sole owner. Just three glasses, mom is weird and doesn’t like champagne

Paired surprisingly well with some nyc street nuts cashews i brought (they’re big fans of the street nuts so i buy a bunch of bags to bring)
I made myself a quick miso soup with tofu and had a plate of fantastic amazing raw veggies. Mom made a chicken wild rice soup earlier today so that’s what the omnis had. There’s a box of see’s candy that i will swipe the dark chocolate molasses chips from as dessert

Christmas Eve is a workday when you’re a musician, so we usually have a celebratory meal and gift opening the night before (we are always either singing or traveling Christmas day). DH wanted a snacky meal, so we enjoyed sausage stuffed mushrooms, a variety of cheese and charcuterie and some chicken liver pâté, all with Ritz crackers - a nice lowbrow touch, lol. I baked a batch of peppermint brownies to give as gifts so we did quality control on those for dessert, and capped the night with a dram of Glenmorangie Taghta. My gifts this year included a gorgeous new Wüsthof and an induction burner. Yippee!

The first no party night in weeks, and what did we have? Charcuterie, cheese, and bread with a glass of wine.

Ended up with that after a long and annoying odyssey in search of turnips.

We’ve decided to join Weight Watchers after the hols. It’s been too much of too much this year.

HA - I know the feeling. After Thanksgiving weekend I thought I could never eat again!

That sounds rather enticing. I shall be slogging through whatever snow comes in on Christmas Day (4-6"?) up to Mom’s to cook dinner. Sister and BIL will be driving down from their cabin in Maine to join at whatever time they arrive.

Either way, you’ll be dining fine! Enjoy and happy holidays to you and the cats.

Saturday was spent mucking about in rain after snow yesterday and overnight. Freezing rain was a good possibility. Sure enough, after all my errands were done and I got home, and about an hour later, the power went out. Came back on about a minute later but then it went out again awhile later - JUST as I was going to start dinner. Arrrgghhh…called National Grid, huddled under a comforter reading a magazine by flashlight, and then about an hour later, THANKFULLY it came back on. So I got to make a late dinner.

Used a spoonful of the Dukes Mayo I bought online and received on Friday and mixed it with Penzeys roasted garlic and ground sumac, then spread it on a BS chickie boobie cut in half lengthwise. Sprinkled some Panko breadcrumbs on top and baked in a pan sprayed with cooking spray until done…maybe 45 minutes? Sprinkled with chives on top. Looked like hell (so no picture) but tasted pretty good. Chicken was very moist. Sides were rice pilaf and steamed green beans.

Tonight will be leftovers while I make Orange-Spiced Nuts and Chicken Corn Chowder for Mom and sis/BIL freezer meals, and wrap the few silly presents I’ll be giving.

Christmas dinner is going to be simple: a roasted pork loin slathered in a mix of minced rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper, and mustard, my triple apple applesauce (because Peter Brady says you have to have applesauce with pork [chops] ), buttered baby potatoes, and sauteed green bean and carrots with a thyme butter. That will be made after slogging through whatever snow we’re expecting overnight into Christmas Day - last I heard, 4-6" and cooked up at Mom’s apartment. Hopefully not that bad.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday.
