Another of our “emergency” dishes when all the planning doesn’t work on a short notice and we rely on some dishes which we can make very quickly with a few easy to get ingredients - Tortellini in Pesto with Sausage, Mushrooms and Cherry Tomatoes.
Gochujang-Marinated Alaska Sablefish With (not- ) Shiitakes. I think this might be my first fish cooked “en papillote”!
Assembled
Cooked!
…I added a side of zesty manzano pepper and pineapple salsa
from my one ripe manzano pepper
Last night was double duty. My dad gets his new hip this morning, so made a casserole for him and my mom to warm up when they get home.
He recovered extremely well after a new knee a year and a half ago, so hope this one goes as well.
Hips are apparently a… walk in the park. Knees & shoulders, not so much.
Good luck to your dad!!!
Your soup looks delicious! Shiitakes and baby bok choy are such a tasty pairing.
We needed out of the house time on Sunday afternoon, so we preceeded dinner with a brief visit to a local brewery. The brewers must be as weary of this snowy winter as we are, because they decided to do a kölsch afternoon even though the weather is anything but summery here.
Retuning home after our mini outing, I sautéed a pile of mushrooms to serve with mushroom and goat cheese pierogi from our favorite pierogi maker. Dusted the whole thing with some of the shallot topping he also makes. Labne subbed for sour cream because that’s what I had.
They even have the proper glasses for Kölsch! ![]()
Last 2 dinners (no pics). Daughter 2 texted me Friday morning that she decided to come down for the weekend and could I make her chicken dum biryani? So that was Saturday night, and the other 2 college kids were also home, and my daughter’s family too, so I made 10 servings that just barely fed the 8 of us.
I used a mash-up of suggestions from Nagi at Recipe Tin and Swasthi’s Recipes (both linked below) for the biryani, and went off-cuisine by serving a Sharizi salad on the side.
Last night, same crowd, was a whole NY Strip roast, heavily trimmed (no fat cap) and cut into 2 x 5 pound chunks, tied to make them sit higher and baked to 128F in a 200F oven, then each pan seared on all 6 sides. Daughters 2 and 3 made a mixed cruciferous veggie salad by shredding cabbage (regular white and Bok Choy), Brussels sprouts, broccoli stems, not sure what else, and then dressed it with pickled red onions and, again, what all else I don’t know(*), but it was delicious.
The roast I sliced in paper thin piles for those who like it that way and more like steaks for those who wanted to eat it with steak knives traditional style.
(*) One AC compressor ran out of refrigerant between Friday and Saturday night (about 3 a.m. Sunday morning was when I noticed it was running non-stop and it was getting too warm in the house). So I spent a lot of the afternoon out there recharging it. That’s why I’m a bit vague on the salad/dressing details.
Also the brewery had the serving trays, the roaming servers, and hole-punched our coasters to keep track of how many glasses we were served. This was explained to me because I’d never experienced kölsch service before. Fun community atmosphere.
Yeah, it’s a fun thing. In Cologne, the “köbes” (waiter) will keep bringing new Kölsch until you put a coaster on your glass. They’re also not as fancy to use a hole puncher, just mark the number of beers on your coaster.
Our favorite brewery in town does the same on sunny afternoons ![]()
Extra Hot (not) S&B Japanese Curry with chicken, onions, carrots, cabbage, brocc, and a ton of beautiful cilantro from my sister’s garden and a splash of lemon juice just before serving. Also, 4 minced thai chilies for a little nose-runniness. I forgot to buy ginger to further doctor the curry up, but it was really good. Leftovers for tonight.
And theyre…brusque, mostly. ![]()
They only seem brusque. It’s the Rhineland equivalent of super-friendly, but it doesn’t translate well to 'murrcans, who are used to slavish smalltalk from their servers vying for tips ![]()
Never unkind, mind. Peters and Gaffel folks were definitely warmer. The guys at Sion were stoic.
72° and sunny tonight with a light breeze. We celebrated by charcoal grilling good beef burgers and topping 'em with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, and sauteed crimini mushrooms. To gild the lily I made homemade part whole wheat hamburger buns, which as someone who usually finds whole wheat inferior, I greatly enjoyed. I could not finish all the sides of homemade baked beans, cole slaw, and broccoli salad vinaigrette.
The Jackson Pollock ketchup was unintentional.
That burger looks sooooo good
Dinner tonight was butter chicken pot pie and tomato cucumber salad. I also had an aperol spritz to sip on during dinner. I had a really big nanaimo bar for dessert.
ooh what is a butter chicken pot pie? Like Indian butter chicken? Looks amazing…
There is a woman at the farmers market I go to that sells chicken pot pies. She makes regular chicken pot pies but the others have different fillings. This one had butter chicken, potato and peas. When I was at the market yesterday I noticed she had one with jerk chicken. I think that will be the next one I try.
Another long day of driving and dentistry in an effort to crush the infection that has developed next to tooth that had the root canal. I’ll save you the gory details but I did cry a bit when I was left alone to numb up. Dinner is coconut, veg, krab chowder, spring rolls from Costco my DiL gifted me, and a tiny Gibson a la old movies, stirred not shaken with onions that I pickled in spicy/sweet jalapeño juice. I’m not sure which I needed more, but all were delicious.
