What's For Dinner #126 - the Hearts, Flowers, Candy, But It's Cold and Snowy! Edition - February 2026

Wait — you quit smoking??? How did I miss those news?

Either way, congrats, chica. That’s about the healthiest thing you can do for yourself, but you know that, of course

Used up most of the thigh meat from Sunday’s roti chicken for tacos, since it’s Taco Tuesday.

Seared it in the chicken fat I’d skimmed from the stock along with a 1/3 of an orange bell pepper lingering in the crisper, all seasoned with a generous shake of Tajin, cumin, and a smoked pepper mix from a friend.

Plopped onto fried flour tortillas with a quick-pickled shallot, Herdez avocado hot sauce, habanero sauce, lime juice, Sinatra. We each had two.

yeah it was really no big deal, i’d gotten sick after a trip to Mexico City and was on meds and everything tasted like shit, so i just stopped. i never had a real “habit”… i could go without it anytime, so it was easy. but now i don’t even have the urge to light up at all.

Excellent! I still very occasionally indulge at ladies nights, but they mostly taste like ass to me, and the nicotine never hits as nicely as imagined.

So happy for you!

Chicken enchilada, salsa verde, jack cheese, sour cream, cilantro. Savoy cabbage, cilantro, radish, jalapeño, oo & lime juice salad. Enchilada and sauce from the freezer. I had a Margarita.

Fish and chips. A nice BC rock cod, panko crusted and pan fried. Homemade tarter sauce. Cuke salad. Alexia frozen fries.

I looked at our local grocery for L&W fries (which the internet incorrectly assured me they had), but there was none to be found. Also, the McCain fries (which I found meh, but DH liked) were sold out. Went with the Alexia, which – from the old days – I remember as being pretty good for frozen fries. They were OK, but frankly, IMO only fresh potatoes actually taste like real potatoes. Not a convert to frozen, but willing to acquiesce as deemed useful.

and tonight’s din-din - BF made me a salad as big as my head, with crispy tofu and all the fixings, including Thai basil we had, with a rice vinegar/sesame oil vinaigrette. Leftover tofu squares for snacking on later.

Gorton’s fish sticks with mustardy tartar on a Trader Joe’s ciabatta roll. Pickled vegetables.

Yesterday’s spur of the moment task since I had a chicken carcass or two to use up.

For Sunday dinner I made Miến Gà - Vietnamese chicken turmeric soup. Turned out a bit bland because i’m supposed to be cutting down on salt (after a lifetime of having low BP, i was just told mine is very high). FEH. I may just turn to meds. I’ve tried Mrs. Dash - hate it - and while I can cut down on some salt I won’t eliminate it. I did find out that MSG surprisingly has about a third of the sodium, so I’ll be using some of that instead of salt when I can. Mostly I’ve stopped eating all the very salty, nightly snacks I was indulging in since I think Thanksgiving! We’ll see what that does to the BP and go from there. I have a new BP cuff monitor on the way (the last one I purchased was giving me erratic readings).

And speaking of salty, for some reason the BF decided to use prepared marinara instead of making his own delicious one, for spag & meatballs last night, and the sodium content in that is sky-high. I scraped some of the sauce away, but still. I did find it salty. It’s hard to believe you become de-accostomed to the salty flavor so quickly (it’s only been about a week that I’ve sort of cut down. But definitely a week since i had any salty snacks.) BF sauteed zucchini as a side, and made me a small salad too.

Also cast iron, but context should make it clear. While we’re at it, CS for carbon steel, ECI for enameled cast iron.

Ok I’m done.

Last night’s dinner was leftover HBH (Honey Baked Ham, haha, guess I wasn’t quite done yet) from a Sunday post-baptismal luncheon for 15 at my daughter’s house. We split the leftover ham with them.

I’ve got soooo much leftover foodstuffs but I’m determined we will get through them. Ribeye meat, still more ham, white bean chicken chili, and (thanks @ChristinaM) ropa vieja that turned a bad London broil experience into something new and pretty good.

I’ll be having withdrawal symptoms from not being able to cook anything new until maybe Saturday. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it through, somehow… (sniffs)… LoL.
