Our first pick of garden herbs for the season - chives, tarragon, parsley – and therefore Green Goddess chicken on the grill. Romaine, cuke, and tomato bread salad with more GG dressing. Exploding with spring herbal goodness (how I missed ya’!).
Despite having eaten my weight in Chinese food this afternoon, I nevertheless felt compelled to make dinner. Because the oyster mushrooms and the pea shoots were right on the edge. And so! With cod and - drumroll, please - the first of the balcony tarragon.
It had an odd taste to me, almost like cooked pumpkin. I would just make my own sauce next time.
Quiche looks perfect and I love the kitty pix! Do they often compete for momma’s attention? It has been so cold in Somerville last two days…if I were a cat, I’d be under a blanket, too.
Tonight I made us Korean bulgogi-style ground pork rice bowls. Somehow we were out of thai bird chilies so i doubled up on the gochugaru/gochujang. Tons of scallions, cilantro thrown in at the end. My kimchi and rice vinegar cukes on the side.
Continuing our anniversary celebration, we enjoyed an outstanding dinner at Cafe Matisse. It was our first time here since the original chef/owner Peter, of over 30 years, sold the restaurant to Chef Greg Powers. I think Peter would be proud. We enjoyed hamachi crudo with chili oil, teriyaki, and wasabi vinaigrette; melt in your mouth seared octopus with chorizo, in a lemon caper butter sauce;
pan seared sirloin with crispy polenta and creamed spinach; Chilean sea bass with lobster fried rice, chili oil and teriyaki; Cajun seafood pasta with scallop and shrimp; jumbo lump crab cake with celery root slaw and lemon garlic aioli; It all went great with an excellent red blend and cabernet.
Green Goddess time - Spring! despite it being gray and drizzly here…
A break in the weather yesterday made it possible to run to the border to replenish my gin. A rare Beefeater martini up.
I’m with @ottawaoperadiva, cooking spring like food, even though the weather is miserable. Where is my spring? Citrus glazed sockeye, The Greenest Green Salad with @roxlet’s Green Goddess dressing. Wine
Dessert was French vanilla ice cream, brown sugar caramel and pistachios.
You have herbs from your garden already? We have snow… I can trade you one snow bank for some herbs… (Just kidding I don’t want snow either I’m just jealous.)

if it’s any consolation, all our leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, kale) are waaayyy behind. It’s been a coldish spring…
Last week the NYT included an insert of Spring Pastas. Mr Bean checked off 19 of the 24 recipes he wants to try - which really means he wants me to make. Since we had everything in the house, I made the Harissa Puttanesca with Toasted Almonds. The sauce was a basic puttanesca with harissa added. The toasted almonds, seasoned with oregano, made for a nice textual contrast. If I make this again, I think I’ll add some raisins to give it more of a North African vibe.
Rigatoni with Beef Ragu with Warm Spices from an ATK recipes - bone-in beef short ribs are braised in a mixture of onions, diced tomatoes, red wine, parsley, cinnamon and cloves before diced and mixed with rigatoni. Finished with parmesan

I liked last week’s karniyarik so much that I made it again, this time with the small skinny eggplants. Sadly, it didn’t quite work out. Even after an hour in the oven, the eggplant wasn’t fully cooked, not soft inside. With Turkish pilaf.
I’ll make a ragout with the leftovers.
Oregon, 6 miles from the California border.
What do you think was tricky about that eggplant? Too fibrous maybe? I’m asking because I prepare eggplant a lot. Now and then this has happened to me.
Usually no, they don’t compete. Murphy is the one who tends to ask for tummy time at least once a night on weeknights, but if I’m reading on weekends, it can be up to 3x a day. Finnegan has stopped asking for his cuddly buddlies as much as he used to (he’d climb on to my lap in the winter and stay under there for upwards of a half hour when he was younger!), but the rawness of this past weekend changed that around - Saturday I came home after running errands to find the Polartec blanket on the foot of my bed all scrunched up, which meant he had climbed under there while I was gone. And then, of course, his under-the-blanket time on Sunday afternoon.
I was wondering if anyone would see that in my bookcase.
