“I’m going to experiment “
I thought the same thing myself.
A dreary day brightened significantly by meeting a friend who was in town just for the day to help her daughter move in.
We bopped around RTM & grabbed lunch together, then hit up TJ Maxx where I found such sundry items as air-fryer liners, a decent & cheap pepper mill, and bag clips that look like French fries.
Got home just a tad before my dood and spent the rest of the afternoon taking a deep dive into the subreddit/PhiladelphiaEats, which I found to be tremendously helpful, not to mention surprisingly friendly & welcoming
As for WWFD tonight, another celebratory meal bc WTF not? Ya only celebrate 25 years of anything once, amirite?
Scored a rez at the highly touted Tabachoy, a Filipino BYOB place that’s on several ‘best of’ lists. We were originally hoping to go with @Bigley9 and our friend who ‘crashed’ our anni dinner last night, but there were only stupid times (think 5pm) available for dining room tables, and I don’t think counter seating makes for a very social experience for a party larger than 2. Plus we figured if we loved it enough we’d come back to try MOAR things what just the two of us could order.
We had ice-cold martinis at home for our aperitivo, then walked the few blocks to the resto.
The place was packed when we got there, and surprisingly we were sat at a 2-top right next to the entrance — thank goodness for that, bc the place was pretty toasty.
We shared the starter sampler (loempia, Tabachoy Caesar & Chance’s fried wings)
and a small portion of pork adobo and garlic rice.
I’d only ever had Filipino loempia back in the American community I grew up in, and I always remembered them (and my ex’s Thai mom’s) to be the best loempia ever
Theirs were amazing, and the Caesar was fantastic as well. The wings were just alright for us.
The adobo was tender & flavorful, and the garlic rice may turn me into a rice convert after all. I am really hoping to go back with a bigger crew and try some of the other things on the menu.
The fact that the place is BYOB of course makes it far more affordable, so it was about a 1/3 of what we paid at the sushi place last night.
Def in the top 3 meals we’ve had in Philly so far, and now DEF want to return with pat and our friend. I somehow couldn’t stop myself from taking a pic of the restaurant’s ‘mascot’ reflection in the window, which was kinda perfect from where I was sitting.
Shrimp, corn & bacon chowder for a cool drizzly day. Sautéed, bacon, onion, garlic, red pepper, potatoes, s&p, added chicken broth and heavy cream. Served topped with sautéed shrimp, more bacon a dusting of smoked paprika and parsley. A piece of toasted sour dough and sweet gem, green onion, radish, avocado salad with ranch.
Beautiful!
Lentil soup from the leftover leg of lamb, French and green lentils in homemade stock*, with roasted red peppers and feta
*Last of the stock I made in May, so tomorrow is Stock Day, from chicken and other leftover bones.
It’s our best producing tree. We also have an akane and a northern spy. They were bought together as a pollinating triad about 4 yrs ago.
Torrential rain last night (and into today) so we scrapped our pizza out plans. Instead my brother made his specialty, fetuccinni Alfredo, I stovetop-grilled briefly marinated chicken, and my DH made a salad with sweet herbed vinaigrette. More dinner rolls. Tasty!
LOVE Northern Spy apples! Used to get them all the time growing up, but now they are often considered an antique apple, not always easy to find in Massachusetts. Thankfully, several orchards nearby have them.
The Akane also sounds good - lucky you for three wonderful apple choices!
Now I really want to go. I wonder how far out you need to plan to get a resy at a reasonable time ?
Holee ballz! I just checked Resy and they got NADA well into 2025 — not for 4, 3, 2, 1 peeps
There were a few parties waiting outside, but I don’t know if they had a later rez, or were hoping to get in on a whim. The place truly is tiny & can probably seat 20 at once.
I think the only way to get a seat is to check Resy every day… which is crazy. I’m so sorry our dinner together didn’t work out
They only book 30 days in advance, just looked at 10/26 and there are a lot of times available.
So here’s an example of why the squirrels are such a problem. On the akane which is our smallest apple tree, this year there were about 12 apples that were set and ripening. We typically wait until they’re actually ready to pick them, and at that point in time, there were two that were available to us, with the critters absconding with the remainder.
Hmmm. I had nothing show up for any number of people. All the dates were gray
That is fantastic news, however! Maybe we should plan ahead? As I said, we’d absolutely love to go back before we leave town
I’m out of town for most of the second half of October, but November & December are wide open — not that you should feel obligated in any way to wait for our availability, of course.
Thank you, I’m an “eat first with your eyes” person.
We have a saying in Germany that basically says the same “Das Auge isst auch mit.”
Little rat bastards!
Unexpected quick trip to Marlowe https://www.marlowesf.com/ as the other planned restaurant doesn’t take reservation and didn’t have any tables. Good dinner but still would like them to change the menu a bit more as it is quite stagnant (especially the entrees)
I have all of this (well, the apples are different variety, and can make the sherry vinaigrette, but otherwise… ). Hmmm…perhaps a salad with dinner tomorrow?
