What's For Dinner #108 - the Start to the Second Half of the Year Edition - July 2024

We had to drive down to Hershey for an ultrasound-guided steroid shot today (apparently, no needles or ultrasound labs exist where we live   ) that will hopefully, finally give me some relief from the at times excruciating chronic pain I’ve been dealing with for well over a year now.

So far I can’t really tell a difference, but it apparently can take up to a week for shit to kick in. What’s another week at this point? :woman_shrugging:t3:

Our Big City friends who spend the summers in our sleepy town wanted to see us before they head out to Ireland for a few weeks.

We’re too lazy to make anything for dinner after basically an entire day on the road, so we’re heading over to theirs in a bit for HH drinks & niblets, and to catch up :grinning:

If you pour the Vernor’s over ice in a cup, you definitely feel it in the nose!!

Rye (Canadian Rye Whiskey) and Ginger here in Canada.

Or Rye and Coke. Or Rye and Diet.

I only drink ginger ale with rye, or when there’s no Coke available.

The lamb was delicious! It was cooked perfectly and went great with the accompanying vegetables.

Halibut with corn, mushrooms, and sage, adapted from:

We had orecchiette pasta with this. Very easy to prep. Our fillets were thicker than what was called for, so they took a few minutes longer than the recipe. This will be a repeat dish at some point!

Pizza Margherita(ish) using purchased dough. I par-baked it first at 425° with some olive oil and was happy with the end result. Sauce was drained stewed tomatoes, fresh garlic, olive oil, and oregano, lightly cooked and pureed. Garden basil, soft mozz, a drizzle of oo and…good. Yay.

We had a nice time at our friends’ place, where we got to meet their daughter and SIL for the first time. The SIL was busy cooking while we were catching up over Jarlsberg & crackers and roasted home-grown zukes, and he and their daughter had their own separate meal while we were chatting. Her mom was a little weirded out, but I thought maybe they just wanted to give us space to catch up. No real dinner besides cheese & vodka martinis, so we drove by the Detroit-style pizza place and ordered a garlic dill pickle pie — it’s been a while. My PIC ordered a large vs. a personal pizza, so they gave us the dill ranch sauce on the side to add as needed. Obvy we didn’t finish it all.

NOM.

Last night’s dinner was a family affair. Grilled chicken, Caesar salad, and a variety of veg and/or fruit-centric salads.

Tonight was rotini with chive oil and roasted mushrooms. Uli’s Italian sausages. Garden carrots in vinaigrette.

Lemon-pepper wings. Another Caesar salad because I need to use up the coddled egg dressing.

I realized today that the library had an early evening screening of the Grand Budapest Hotel so I headed over after work to take it in. Since I didn’t feel like chopping all the veggies for the salad I had planned for tonight so I switched and had tomorrow’s peanut butter noodles tonight and I will have today’s salad tomorrow. I still have a sink full of dishes to tackle and no nightcap left :frowning: Our liquor store employees are on strike so I have a feeling I will be going a long time without access to said nightcap :frowning:

I live in Canada and our liquor stores are provincially owned. The staff in the Ontario stores are on strike right now since they are asking for raise in salary, job security (a ridiculous amount of staff are casual) and the most contentious is that they do not want alcohol sold in grocery stores. We already have some beer and wine available in grocery stores but the selection is small and crappy. I am from the province of Quebec, who has been doing this for decades, and the provincially owned liquor stores and grocery stores manage to co-exist. I am fully supportive of the salary raise and job security but living in Ontario is like living in the times of prohibition. There was talk of opening 5 warehouses in Ottawa (where I live) this weekend so the bars and restaurants could restock their supplies but pickets showed up presumably to prevent the “replacement workers” (read scabs) from entering the warehouse. I miss my nightcaps but as you can tell I am all in favour of workers rights. (And trying to be diplomatic which isn’t easy form me when it comes to workers rights.) Ottawa is on the border between Ontario and Quebec so I could to over to the Quebec side to visit one of their liquor stores but I don’t drive and I am not interested in bussing it all over the place to look for one bottle of Grand Marnier. I looked into delivery since the Ontario liquor stores are offering free delivery but most likely using replacement workers to fill orders which I am trying to avoid. I could order my Grand Marnier from a Quebec liquor store but there is a delivery fee which is a little pricey for my budget so I decided to wait until the strike is over.
