I see she confirms the use of canned or jarred cherries for the spiced chocolate cake. Maybe (partially) thawed frozen would work here? I have a small stash of those in the freezer.

Yes, I think that would work. She calls for jarred sour cherries in most of the recipes that use them, but I think all forms are pretty much interchangeable.

Score - Beatrice Ojakangas’ The Great Scandinavian Baking Book via a FB Buy Nothing Group. In perfect condition (especially considering it was published in 1999).

A fun garage-sale find, this meals in 30 minutes book has wonderful cartoon illustrations by Lou Brooks, inspired by 1950’s vintage memes. Recipes to the Rescue: Thrilling Kitchen Adventures… Just in the Nick of Time

Has anyone tried The Sqirl Jam book? https://www.amazon.ca/Sqirl-Away-Jamming-Preserving-Canning/dp/1419735330
It was a birthday gift, and it’s a very beautiful book. But I also remember this story… https://www.eater.com/2020/7/13/21322462/sqirl-jam-mold-moldgate-jessica-koslow

I remember that story too well.

We looked at and liked books with other flavor combinations more.
I am not sure how their issues with jam production has any influence about the quality of their book

Anyone have thoughts on Milk Street Fast & Slow or Cookish? Both are on kindle sale.

That’s a fair comment! I should look at it a bit more… I have quite a few cookbooks for canning…

I think Milk Street has good recipes (better than CI) but if you have their Milk Street Magazine on a regular basis it is not worth buying as all recipes in their books have also appeared in the magazine (same annoying issues as with CI books)

I don’t subscribe, but I occasionally check the recipes from the tv show that are (free) on the website.

Are collections like the instant pot book different than the magazine?

My library does have the magazine I think. I should look.

I have a subscriptions to Milk Street and early on bought one of their cookbooks without looking beforehand (expecting some new recipes) - every single recipe was published previously. I have checked now out of curiosity some of their newer cookbooks sometimes in bookstores and every recipe is published before (sometimes there are small changes, e.g. now the recipe is for four instead of two people etc.). Since they have regular instant pot recipes in their magazine I would be surprised if they have any/many new ones on their book$

Thank you — agree it’s probably just a compilation then. I’ll borrow it from the library sometime to check out what’s included.

I was very excited to get this for new vegetable ideas but honestly never cook from it. Lost interest.

i’ve added Devan Rajkumar’s Mad Love: Big Flavors Made to Share, from South Asia to the West Indies to my wish list.

I have Fast and Slow on kindle but haven’t used it, so no real opinion. I love Cookish for reasonably quick, interesting meals. Not home now or i could give you a list of things we’ve repeated, but they would include inverted (or upside down?) pizza, kimchi fried rice, an Asian noodle dish, and a salad.

Thanks to you, @ChristinaM, and @honkman -/ sounds like a book I should borrow sometime but I don’t need to own.

I love that inverted pizza! But @honkman is right — I found the recipe on the tv website after you shared it.

For sure, I think all or most of the recipes are on the Milk Street site (not sure about the show’s site). Sometimes slightly changed but I usually end up making slight changes anyway. So if you can access the site you don’t really need any of their books. And yet I keep buying them!

It’s different to look through a book when you want inspiration, and different to go hunting for a recipe on the Internet.

All the milk street recipes I’ve made came from seeing them on the show, or seeing a pic on Insta, or something like that.

Sometimes i watch their program on tv, dont own any magazines. Everytime i have tried their free recipe site i get flooded with ads. I own 3 of their cookbooks and really like the way they are set up. Their latest cookbook is 365, and I’ve read there is a lot of repetitive recipes. I cooked quite a few and everyone was excellent.
