Weekly Menu Planning - October 2025

Hi everyone

Seems like the east and west coasts have been pummeled by rain… can’t believe I jinxed that perfect fall weather :woman_facepalming:t2:.

It’s been slow going for me on the cooking front, even though I stocked up on easy things that would appeal. Maybe mojo has been the issue. I also succumbed to a rotisserie chicken at the store because it was on sale haha, so I have slowly been working my way through it.

Actuals and plan for the week:

Sat – Small pre-Diwali gathering with friends to “play cards” – we ate chicken kathi rolls from the usual place when we took a break, and finished with lovely pistachio gelato from Anita. (I didn’t want to play but they bullied me, and then I won… serves them right )

Sun – Braved the storm to attend my baby cousin’s wedding reception faaaaaaar away. Food was surprisingly disappointing, so I did a freezer dive when I got home and ate a scallion pancake with homemade cured salmon.

Mon – Still stormy. Chicken curry noodle soup using very gelatinous bone broth from some marrow bones last week, and more rotisserie chicken, plus a pile of snow peas and yu choy. Between red curry paste and a new Thai curry powder, this was a flavor bomb!

Tues – If I make it to the grocery store, maybe a fall panzanella or fattoush with roasted squash and arugula. If I don’t, I’ve got dumplings in the freezer and more bone broth for soup. Plus some veg.

Wed – Thinking Shami Kababs to use up the rest of the rotisserie chicken (like this) + crunchy okra / microwave okra fries + dal + chapatis from the freezer

Thurs – Light dinner after a Malaysian lunch out. That panzanella / fattoush if I didn’t get to it yet. Otherwise a pantry meal like sardines on toast. Plus veg.

Fri – Out for dinner and the opera for a friend’s birthday, it’s looking like sushi early and gelato or Italian sit-down dessert during intermission or after.

Sat – Either out for Diwali weekend or I’ve been craving pasta so something in that vein (possibly spicy vodka sauce because I ate a great rendition recently and have it on my mind).

Sun – Also probably out for Diwali weekend (plans are slow in the making this year but, from past experience, they tend to suddenly collect like a 5 car pile up).

Mon – Diwali potluck with friends.

.

This week’s planning includes what to make for the annual Diwali gathering with friends on Monday. I have missed it due to travel for the past couple of years, so I’m excited to see this group. My current thought is to make a Rasmalai Tres Leches Cake or Malpua (saffron & cardamom crepes) Cake for dessert, but I’m still thinking about what app or main. Maybe Potato Puff Pastry Spirals I made a while back now that TJs has the pastry in stock again, or a Chaat salad / dip with a side of Tostitos scoops standing in for the traditional puris. Pondering this weighty matter , and will consult with the hosts for the rest of the menu.

I also really need to get my act together for the college care packages that were supposed to go out before Diwali!

Wish you all a good week; I hope it dries up and warms up a bit to take this chill off!

When I lived in Fremont, CA, which has a large South Asian population, there was not a lot of public-facing Christmas decor at my apartment complex, but there were a lot of balconies festooned with colored lights for Diwali. (As an aside, for decades Fremont has also been home to the largest Afghan immigrant population in the US).

Cooking for 3 in southwestern Ontario.

Tonight, Tuesday, Oct 14th, I made a tuna casserole with Tex Mex cheese blend.

I also made some additional stuffing to go with the leftover Thanksgiving Turkey.

I made turkey stock today using some for Avgolemono Soup today.

I refrigerated 4 cups of turkey stock for another Avgolemono Soup or Tom Kha Turkey tomorrow.

I also froze around 3 cups of turkey stock and a lb of turkey breast for later use.

Wednesday, in addition to the Tom Kha Turkey, I’ll roast the last beets and parsnips from my garden. I’ll also make some beef and rice stuffed peppers which I might freeze, rather than serve tomorrow night.

Thursday, probably roasted potatoes, protein to be determined. I am tired of my own cooking. LOL.

thanks!

Greetings, People.

I hate getting old. I made a trip to the grocery this week for scallions and cheese. I ended up going to both stores (small town) to seek out exactly what I wanted. Didn’t make any purchases at the first store. At the second store, along with scallions and cheese, I made impulse purchases of kalamata olives and whole-bean coffee (both on sale!) … and left the friggin’ scallions at the store at self-checkout. I hate it when that happens. It wasn’t worth the investment to make a return trip and ask if anyone had found them and set them aside for me, but – because I am wired as such - I’ll be forever haunted by the episode (I was raised by parents of The Great Depression, and the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree … my father would have gone back to ask and then been angsty for a week if no results).

I have since, on passing the store while on other errands, gone in for more scallions.

Cooking for two adults in the PNW.

FRI: Zucchini pizza – probably the last for the season. Chopped tomato salad with scallions.

SAT: Cashew chicken and scallions with rice.

SUN: Salmon Caesar, pan-roasted with scallions.

MON: Burgers on the grill. Convection-oven fries.

TUE: Fondue! We had an alpine-inspired fondue dinner on our vacation this year, and I hope to recreate a savory, cheesy version at home. I’m thinking about the following: ham cubes, mini beef meatballs, apple pieces, bread cubes, pickled cucumber pieces, diced roast potatoes. Salad greens in vinaigrette on the side.

WED: Roasted tomato-basil soup with cheesy garlic bread. Green salad in vinaigrette.

THUR: Shrimp and grits with bacon and scallions. Casino butter. Tomato salad

If it’s any consolation, I’ve done that before  I went to a deli to buy olives a few years ago and the deli I go to has a wide assortment of olives in bulk. So I took a container, filled it up then headed to the cash to pay. I put the olives down on the counter to dig my wallet out of my purse, paid, then left empty handed. Thankfully I realized almost immediately I left the olives behind so I went back for them all to be greeted by a store employee looking at me with a quizzical look on his face  The store employee was actually the owner and I shop there often enough he probably would have left the olives in the fridge by the cash for a few days to see if I come back for them.

Years ago, my father and stepmother were in Oaxaca for Día de los Muertos, and their photos and stories were amazing.

I’m in the left it at the store club as well. 2 pounds of ground turkey about 2 weeks ago.

Eggs and deli turkey about a year ago. Interesting that I only forget things when I don’t have my kids with me

It’s funny how long we recall these things. My brother tossed a marginal banana in the trash about 10 years ago, and still goes on about it (wasting food, etc.) …

Hello everyone I am now gearing up for a weekend spent mostly at home. We are now getting more fall-like temperatures so it is time to take out my fall clothes :frowning: I am also getting a glut of root veggies in my CSA and they will have to be cooked and frozen. Last week’s stuffed squash experiment was a success. I got a delicata squash in my CSA so I made a ground beef/rice mixture that I usually use to make stuffed peppers. I cooked the squash and put the beef in the centre cavity then topped with a little Rao’s marinara sauce that I heated up separately. I only used half the squash so the other half is in the freezer for future use. Onto my menus for this week:

Today: My usual Friday take-out lunch is from Farm Boy (Canadian equivalent to TJs). I love the store - their groceries are very fresh and good quality but I am not a fan of their prepared foods. But I am pressed for time on the grocery shopping front this weekend so I ran up at lunch to do part one of my grocery run. (Part two will be after work.) As I was milling around the hot food bar I heard one young lady mention to her friend that they have a Thanksgiving section today and sure enough they had some sliced turkey, sliced ham and stuffing so I got a little turkey and stuffing for lunch. I swung by the vegetable portion of the hot food bar and got some mashed potatoes and everything is actually very good! I will have a salad for dinner tonight.

Saturday: Time to take out the fall clothes. I plan on baking one of the acorn squashes in the fridge. I have two so I will bake one this weekend and the other next weekend. I will also make some aloo gobi to place in the center of the half I will eat tonight then I will put the other half in the freezer.

Sunday: I’m going to an afternoon artist talk at a nearby art gallery. I went to an exhibition at City Hall recently to see some glass tiles with images of local flora painted on them made by local artist Emily Rose Michaud. Apparently the artist has an off grid studio in West Quebec just north of Ottawa and she forages for flowers, herbs, etc. to make various tinctures and the flora she spotted during her foraging outing were inspiration for her artwork. I look forward to meeting her and hearing a bit about her artwork. Dinner tonight will be a salade nicoise.

Monday: I had planned on making Singapore noodles for dinner one night last week however I had parts of red, green and yellow peppers to finish up so I took a boneless skinless chicken breast out of the freezer and I made a stir fry that night. Tonight I will have the Singapore noodles.

Tuesday: Off to a watercolour class. I went to my first class last week and I must admit I prefer sketching. I’ve decided I don’t like looking at watercolours too much especially my own  So when this class ends I think I will stick to sketching. I will have leftover aloo gobi for dinner.

Wednesday: Pork and green bean stirfry.

Thursday: Today is the last CSA pick up day of the season. I also have a film society screening tonight although it’s up in the air if I will go. I’m expecting a lot of vegetables this week and it may take some time to squeeze everything into the fridge  If I go to the movies I will have dinner on the way there, if not I will forage.

Have a nice week everyone.

I prepared my garden in case it freezes, which meant I didn’t have time to get to the store to buy fresh fish and I don’t feel like fighting traffic to go out now.

so…

frozen fish tonight, made into a stew, sort of Moqueca style.

I’m going to try to get through the odds and ends vegetables from the garden that are growing my crisper. Beets, green beans, peppers , lettuce.

roasted potatoes.

Saturday will be leftover roasted pork shoulder from Thursday.

Sunday, I plan to make a prime rib, to pack the fridge with leftovers for a couple days.

Monday: any Friday and Saturday night leftovers

Tuesday: a whole roasted chicken

Wednesday: more leftovers.

Sides: flying by the seat of my pants the next 5 days!
