Weekly Menu Planning January 2025

Have you tried the Persian lentil soup yet? I would like to make a soup this weekend and I have all the ingredients.

Yes, I’ve made it many times, in fact. It’s a favorite. I’m not a fan of mint, however, so leave that out.

Thanks! Now I know which soup I will be making this weekend

Hello friends we are now in a week long deep freeze so between being laid up with a broken toe then hibernating due to freezing cold temperatures, my crankiness has reached a whole new level  I must admit it isn’t too bad today since the sun is out and it seems to be warming up a little. I keep reminding myself cold snaps come once a year so this weather isn’t going to last forever. My toe is considerably better thanks to the power resting I have been doing and I am already thinking about going on an outing on Sunday. Onto my menu for this week:

Today: I bought spaghetti and meatballs as my take-out lunch today so I will make a Greek salad for dinner.

Saturday: I will be going to a matinée movie with one of my meetup groups (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”) then off to an Ethiopian café after to discuss the movie.

Sunday: Mac 'n cheese, Greek salad. I am contemplating going to City Hall today since it’s close by and they have three art galleries there. The galleries are quite small - just one room each - so it might be a good first outing to give my toe a test run. I think they still have one bench to sit on if I need to rest for a bit.

Monday: Thai cod green curry.

Tuesday: Leek and sundried tomato risotto.

Wednesday: Thai spicy beef from my Thai cookbook. I made this dish last Friday and I will have a little pepper, a few beans, and a little coconut milk left by Wednesday I can finish it all up in this dish.

Thursday: Another film society screening so dinner out again after the movie.

Lunches this week will alternate between sweet potato and kale salad and the Persian style lentil and tomato soup that @MunchkinRedux shared upthread.

If anyone in our group lives near L.A. or knows anyone that does, I hope you are all safe and sound.

Hi, all! Cooking for 2 in Chattanooga, where we’re enjoying watching the snow fall from our cozy house (the grocery store was crazy yesterday; so many bare shelves!). Fingers crossed the power stays on!
Breakfast: Brioche, perfect snow-day project
Saturday, January 11: Chicken thighs with orange sauce, roast potatoes, parsnip mash with Brussels sprouts.
Sunday: Lamb and bean curry from an old Sunset cookbook; roasted veggies; chocolate shortcakes with red fruit sauce
Monday: Scrounge
Tuesday: Ground chicken and sweet potato skillet (gift link), a NYT newsletter inspiration
Wednesday-Thursday: TBD
Friday: Cacio et pepe; shaved carrot and parsnip salad–a Milk Street two-fer.

Sending good wishes for safety and comfort to our friends in LA. My brother-in-law has a house in Topanga, so we’ve been watching very carefully.
Have the best week possible, and happy cooking!

Hi everyone, first, my thoughts go out to everyone anywhere near the fires. The situation is so scary, and I hope you’re safe. Thinking especially of ElsieDee and DKennedy.

It has been extremely cold (by our normal standards) here, and we even got some snow last night. It is now melting but I worry that it will refreeze once the sun and temperature go down this afternoon. The cold temps had an effect on my cooking - I had plans to take myself out a couple nights this week, but didn’t end up doing so because I really just wanted to stay home and warm. But I managed to make myself some good meals, and put a dent in the freezer stash. Here is what I (we as of last night) ate:

Mon: baked flounder with lemon cream sauce (recipetin - so delicious!), rice, salad

Tues: creamy braised beans (NYT) over toast, salad

Wed: sweet & salty shrimp with charred cabbage (I Dream of Dinner) over noodles

Thurs: carry out

Fri: tavuk guvec (Turkish chicken, vegetable, potato stew, Flavour) over polenta

Not sure what we’ll do over the weekend. Roads are icy. There is leftover tavuk guvec, and I got makings for turkey and havarti sandwiches in case LLD didn’t want to cook or pick up carry out, so those are strong possibilities. I am cozy with a pile of books from the library and nowhere to go since the town is basically shut down, and I am very happy to let LLD decide. Hope everyone has a good week.

Just sitting with sadness about the devastation in Los Angeles.

For two adults in San Diego:

Breakfasts: Starting off with indulgences from a favorite bakery. Will likely follow with scones.

S: (tonight) Takeout - Chicken pot pies

Su: Macaroni and cheese, with bacon and peas

M: Creamy chicken soup with garlic bread - soup

T: Chicken quesadillas with guacamole

W: Chicken with leftover dressing and peas (from freezer) to use up leftover gravy from pot pies

Th: Shrimp tacos - seafood

F: Veggie pseudo-risotto (adding cream and cheese to leftover yellow rice), salad - vegetarian

Be kind to yourselves this week.

Hi everyone. I’m so very tired of cooking, but we’ve gotta eat, so…

Sun: brisket (bbq style), cacio e pepe twice baked potatoes (Julia Turshen), green beans. I’ve also got granola cooling (sesame-ginger stuff from NYT) and Turkish red lentil soup bubbling for lunches.

Mon: chicken parm meatball subs - assuming someone goes to the store tomorrow for sub rolls for the guys, because we completely forgot to get them today. I’m eating mine with pao de quejio but I don’t think they want to do the same. Vegetable tbd as the planned sugar snap peas were out of stock too. (On a non-food note, I’ve got two contractor candidates to interview at work, and I’m hopeful that I’ll have some help by the end of the week!)

Tues: one-pot mac and cheese, roasted broccoli

Weds: encore presentation of brisket and baked potatoes

Thurs: hot honey chicken (NYT) using corn Chex instead of flakes. Shredded/sautéed carrots and parsnips.

Fri: tbd as usual

Hi all

Our rotating roster of new year guests has kept us very busy, and me off writing up my tentative plans and actuals. The last of them finally left today, leaving me about a week to catch up with a few friends and help with a move before I head home (possibly a few days after I had scheduled). Also, I threw out my tummy, so I am on forced simple carbs for a couple of days :joy: (actually I love all of them, so the “forced” is just a bit of performative self-pity ).

Actuals for the past week or so:
– Vegetable au gratin, Roast chicken, Roast potatoes, fresh bread & butter.
– Indian Chinese: Chicken Manchurian, Hakka noodles, Garlic fried rice, Szechuan chicken lollipops, sweet corn soup, wonton soup.
– Indian at home: Kheema aloo, dal, cauliflower peas, parathas, and rice
– Chicken in an onion-ginger-garlic-green chilli-butter sauce (like Ethiopian Alitcha), parathas, salad, rice.
– Mish mosh leftovers: Kofta curry, coconut rice, mutton korma, parathas, kababs.
– Chaat, Patti samosas, Tea sandwiches, Tandoori chicken, Malai kabab, Butter chicken, naan, rumali roti.
– Khichdi, sauteed potatoes, papad, yogurt.

Tentatives for the next few days:
– More potato-rice-bread for me (!), perhaps pasta for the others (porcini ravioli or manicotti or a light pesto pasta in anticipation of a heavy meal the next day
– A traditional Parsi feast to celebrate a Navjote (religious induction ceremony) – my mom’s best friend’s grandson; the last one I went to was his dad’s :astonished:. I am really excited about this!
– Sushi bowls once my tummy is 100% again – I have been remiss in making zero of these since I arrived. Either shrimp or salmon, with cabbage, carrots, avocado, rice, and sauces – wasabi and spicy mayo.
– Homemade pizza
– Frankies aka Kathi rolls / Kabab wraps
– Momos & soup

We’ve got a small move to take care of and some unrelated stressful work related stuff to deal with, so some of the tentative may shift to convenience and comfort.

Hope you are all safe and healthy in the new year.

Hah, Navajo was a bit of a head-scratch for India.

Never heard the term frankies for kathi rolls.

Bombay vs elsewhere

Kathi roll is originally a Delhi term for a roll with a seekh kabab

Chicken roll is the Calcutta version with cubes

Thursday
I’ll make a variation on Zuppa Toscana tonight, with Savoy cabbage and bacon. I won’t add kale or sausage.

Also, Breton Beans, which are a Polish preparation of white beans with tomato, bacon and herbs.

Roasted parsnips.

Maybe poached pears following the Ottolenghi recipe with white wine and saffron.

Friday:
Salmon, prep to be determined. Defrosted cooked lobster, probably Lobster Salad.

On second thought, I think I’ll make this
https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/easy-lobster-paella-recipe-1948245.amp

Or this

Saturday: ribeye again.

Greetings, People.

They’re predicting a cold and wet summer for the PNW this year. Drat. Started my garden this week anyway by seeding some early spinach. In a seasonal sign of optimism, the newly raised asparagus beds are showing signs of life.

Cooking for two adults in the maritime climes:

FRI: Shrimp and pork fried rice. Maybe some Char Siu if it looks OK at the store, but last time I checked, it was double the old price and two days past the “best by” date. Yuk.

SAT: Soup of some sort. Focaccia.

SUN: Leftover fried rice. Scallion pancakes.

MON: Tex Mex Caesar. Chicken tacos with a copy-cat Chipotle honey vinaigrette. I’ve never been to a Chipotle, but I understand the vinaigrette has quite a following.

TUE: Burgers on the grill. Gourmet chips.

WED: Swedish meatballs (leftover mix from freezer). Smashed potatoes. Currant jelly. Baby green peas.

THUR: Fish pie with a halibut and shrimp filling, and smashed spuds on top. Salad.

This isn’t crazy early for asparagus? I don’t garden at all, so I have no knowledge of this stuff - it just surprises me.

Even more appealing than always because my tummy is off

It’s way too early but it’s imported to Canada year-round. The current asparagus comes from Chile or Mexico. There’s a bitter taste in most imported asparagus I’ve eaten in the winter.

I only eat asparagus these days when it’s in season in northern California (which gets imported to Canada for a month or so), or in season in Ontario and Michigan.

I really like the Hairy Bikers’ English fish pie recipes. There are at least 3 I am familiar with.

I hope you feel better soon, @Saregama

MunchkinR said she was seeing signs of life in her raised beds, and that surprised me.
