Trader Joe's 2024: YEA/NAY/MEH

I love these! They are delicious by themselves, but also trying scooping up the cannoli dip with them!

And Sam’s Club has really good boxed Bartletts this time of year. I put most of them in the crisper drawer and ripen them a few at a time on the countertop. When I find a nice box I give some to my neighbors.

Late January through March is typically when TJ’s carries bags of Sky Valley Heirloom navel oranges. Light blue label, from California. They have intense orange flavor, with low acidity.

I had to buy the snack size pack and refrain from the whole box. If you have had Almond Roca, it’s essentially the same thing. They are delicious, but what’s not to like about buttery toffee? I do prefer the dark chocolate version that Almond Roca makes - and they can be harder to find - so if TJ ever does a dark chocolate version, I’ll be in trouble.

I’ve never had an Almond Roca! Do they still exist? Sounds like such an old-fashioned candy to me.

I love toffee, but also would prefer dark chocolate. And pistachios. Which is why we NEVEREVER buy those at TJ’s

Most imported Stollen in the US arrives dry AF, and never seems to have the appropriate amount of marzipan.

These crisps seem to combine all the negative aspects of Stollen. That would be a big fat NAY for me.

But for people who like dry AF snacks or subpar versions of the real thing, these may just be perfect, who knows :woman_shrugging:t2:

Absolutely still exist! They are popular for Chinese families to give as gifts during celebratory seasons (like tins of Danish butter cookies and Ferrero Rocher - no idea how these came to be). I sometimes see them in CVS, or a local pharmacy that has small candy and snacks section, but if you don’t spot them, a local Chinese/Asian market might have them.

I see on their site, they even have an extra dark! I’ve never seen that in stores. And I thought their dark ones had the almond coating, but I guess not. It’s all about the butter toffee anyway.

These are the newest flavor in the line of these crisps (like Rainforest crackers if you are familiar with those).

They come in a couple of regular flavors the rest of the year (fig and nut of some sort, and one other), plus a couple of others through the year (there was a strawberry one over the summer, now this).

They’re meant to pair with cheese, of course, and are a nice foil with the bit of dried fruit if that’s your thing. Also a nice textural accompaniment to a custardy dessert like pudding or curd.

But my parents used to like them on their own, as a crunchy accompaniment to coffee or tea — just enough sweetness and chew from the dried fruit to make them interesting, but still very light if you’re only eating a couple.

(Comparing this to the inspiration is like being disappointed you didn’t get cake when you eat biscotti or rusk lol.)

I’ve been a bit obsessed with fudge lately, so I felt like I manifested not one but two kinds in the holiday selection :joy:)

There’s a maple fudge and a 3-pack assortment of clotted cream, chocolate, and spiced flavors.

They’re all English-style, meaning they’re drier than American fudge.

Tasty, though I could have done without the “spiced” flavor.

If I hadn’t just made chocolate fudge myself, I would have given these a much stronger YEA, but it’s still a YEA. (I’d like a box of just the chocolate kind, but it’s better for me if they never do that!)

YEA for the Belgian chocolate cookie assortment. It was very nice to find a box hanging out in the office kitchen just when I wanted something to go with my afternoon tea.

I brought home stollen from a famous bakery in Munich that is a spin-off of the famous bakery in Dresden.

I also have been baking stollen to fit our household. Dried cherries, dried apricots, dried currants, pistachios or almonds, no Citron (candied citrus peel), no orange zest.

NAF, and not a new product, but I’ve not seen it mentioned here yet — much to my surprise.

So… HELLZ YEA to the super lemon room spritz. Having had to share a bathroom with our dear cat for 3.5 months, who likes to do his business ideally in our company & seems to have trouble covering his “tracks,” so to speak, it is a LIFE SAVER.

But I love everything lemon, so there’s that, too

A mostly YAY for the English toffee ice cream. There was a slight bitterness on the finish I’m not crazy about but I’m going to use that as portion control

Also YAY as 2 packages of puff pastry are in my freezer now

Will that be enough puff pastry to get you through the year??

It should be. I bake with it once or twice a year so they last a long time around here

I’m thrilled with the latest recipe for Apple Strudel I tried, good all year round and not that difficult.

It’s easy to roll out larger with a little flour and a silicone mat.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but TJs has had a dark chocolate toffee with roasted pistachios for a long time. I was buying it pretty regularly until my daughter got her wisdom teeth out and I decided having it in the house was just too cruel.

I really like these! Nice bite and no artificial sweetener.
ETA: perhaps these rebranded?
