Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

Cabbage can be used as a noodle / pasta replacement, if you let it soften.

BudgetBytes has lots of easy cabbage recipes, but this and this would work with brats swapped in as the meat of choice, and also this kielbasa and cabbage skillet.

I’ve got a Spanish cabbage and potato dish called Trinxat on my list to make soon – would be good as a side, or with some diced brats mixed in for flavor.

And if you like vegetable pancakes as a meal, I love Korean jeon, which can be made with shredded cabbage as the vegetable component (add some spice and you’ll be adjacent to kimchijeon, or skip it and add some scallions or onions for a regular jeon).

I’m a big cabbage slaw fan as a main course salad or side when it gets warmer, just not the mayo kind. Viet slaw, ramen salad, and so on.

Yes, I tried to make okonomiyaki and Sunshine didn’t like it.

That looks real good and next time potatoes are on sale – I want to try that!!

I don’t like okonomiyaki either, but I do like Korean jeon. Different thickness / texture / flavor. And no egg.

Minimal batter, just enough to bind the vegetables, and a bit of a loose hand with the oil, makes for a crisper rather than doughier pancake. You can mix some rice flour and/or cornstarch in with the AP to lighten and crisp it up.

Personally, I really liked my okonomiyaki attempt (plain), but I’m not going to make it just for me.

Cabbage goes well with most sausages, so YES go for it with the brats! My Polish grandpa would make cabbage and kielbasa like this:
Brown the sausage, then saute the cabbage in the drippings. Put the sausage back in the pan, add a little liquid (broth, beer, wine and water all work) and simmer til done.

You are correct.

Not a “household expense”, but I just bought a quart of paint, the first time in probably 5 years.

$33. For a QUART of paint. My sister said a gallon can be upwards of $80. Many paint ingredients are derived from petroleum (resins, solvents), so higher oil prices are affecting those ingredients, and there are supply chain disruptions, among other issues.

Sheesh.


Trinxat version, I had about half cabbage, half Yukon gold/yellow potato, garlic, various fresh herbs. I bloomed some paprika in the pan prior to adding the chilled potato mixture, but it was very soft due to the abundance of cabbage, managed to keep it together on the first flip and then put a dish over it to release it from the pan. This would be nice with an egg on top. I cooked the potatoes, cabbage and 4 eggs in the Instant pot on low steam for 4 minutes which was perfect for me. The prosciutto slices were zapped on paper towels in the microwave until crisp. I enjoyed it and would probably make again, but ‘tain’t” party fare.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I struck out on my morning bicycle ride to the grocery stores. Nothing on clearance that I could use or put in the freezer, but that is OK. We’re good.

As I turned the corner for home, I passed the gas station and the price is back up to $5.09/gallon. It had been $4.99/gallon for a couple weeks – not any more! :frowning:
