Who invented avocado toast?

I am going to finally make this.

Chileans have been eating “pan/tostadas con palta” far, far longer than some people a certain country. It was not documented until the 20’s when it appeared in a cookery book.

In Mexico I enjoy eating freshly made corn tortillas with avocado. Just spread avocado on the warm tortilla, roll it up and eat. 2 ingredients.
FYI, world’s second biggest avocado consumer is Chile, right behind Mexico!

I love bread and like putting most things on my (lightly toasted) bread. Our supermarkets have a section with about 300 things you can put on toast/bread. I make my own standard stuff for weekend lunches (pistachio paste, kumquat mamarlade - when in season, peanut butter, chocolate-macadamia paste). What I often put on my lightly toasted bread are sardines, grated tomatoes, sliced liver, scrambled eggs-trout roe-North Sea shrimp, natto.

In Portugal I like Pão de forma: very thick slices of toasted bread with butter. Washed down with a big glass of galão, or meia de leite, Portuguese “cafe con leche”. This is the real “Portuguese breakfast”.

In Malaysia I like kaya toast. Need to go to Singapore to try the sesame version.

In Sardinia: crostini con bottarga

Toasted bread with butter, jam and feta is one of my favorites.

I really enjoy the slightly citrusy and slightly sweet Bolo LĂȘvedo, toasted with butter, also from Portugal.

I also like toasted Ontario cheese bread with unsalted butter and a pinch of sea salt. Toasted Ontario cheese bread with butter was my breakfast today.

Sourdough toast with cultured butter and buckwheat honey beats most fancy desserts. It’s either that or orange or lemon marmalade. Or “poor sod’s pain au chocolate” which is toast and butter folded over a couple of chocolate baking sticks. Mug of coffee on the side is a must.
Every now and then I get a craving for a thick layer of marmite on white toast.

I don’t have a toaster, and I’ve only recently started to buy sliced bread for sandwiches (WF has very convenient sliced whole wheat or sourdough half-boules). I store it in the freezer. Today I discovered that the air fryer mode produces very decent toast.

Big fan of avocado toast here. I love to toast some sourdough, smash up half an avocado on each slice, season with salt, oregano, Italian seasoning, and chili flakes. Topping it with a fried or poached egg makes it perfection!

Yup.

Use kālua pig (if you can find it) or a slice of hard seared Spam for a more authentic Hawaiʻi flavor!

Mmmmmm TOAST!

Basic properly buttered toast is the best form of toast. What “proper” means varies in my family — for me, butter edge-to-edge while the toast is warm enough to melt it, for others the toast has to be cooled somewhat first so the butter doesn’t melt and is visible :woman_shrugging:t2:

After that, familiar childhood favorites top the list:
Thinly shaved cheddar on (buttered) toast
Ham
Marmite
Honey
Cheese spread / cream cheese

Everything exotic / more complicated after that:
Chicken liver (sautéed) / any pate
Sardines / canned tuna (“salad” with bun, chilli, lemon, but no mayo
Avocado (+ Tajin)

And plenty more.

ETA: Of course, type of bread also impacts what optimally goes on the toast! Pullman-style sliced is my comfort food, boules and sourdough and seeded and all the rest are “exotics” no matter how often I eat them.

Buttered warm (so butter melts) and sprinkled with generous dashes of cinnamon sugar. Proper ratio for the batch of cinnamon sugar to refill the shaker : 8 T sugar, 1 T ground cinnamon).

I have also been adding cardamom to my cinnamon toast on occasion!

Three with sourdough:

Toast, butter, Rose’s lime marmalade

Dip bread in egg/milk batter with a splash of vanilla and some salt. Fry in peanut oil or, better still, bacon fat. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and flip to caramelize the cinnamon sugar in the fat. Top with maple syrup.

Spread avocado on toast. Spread harissa. Squeeze lemon. Sprinkle Maldon salt.
