Things you like to use a microwave to do

Until you get a little browning. Have to be attentive as they can burn quickly

I, too, seek out containers other than plastic. Even if they ended up in the trash, I’d rather have glass or cardboard in the environment than plastic, and much plastic will ultimately end up being discarded rather than recycled. Stay the course! Plastic is just not the solution we seem to have thought at its advent.

My home recycling (same guy as trash service, but a different bin and truck) doesn’t want glass. But the county will still take clear, unpigmented glass for recycling, and it’s only a 10 minute drive.

I haven’t seen any limits on corrugated and plastics from the home service as yet. But I’ve also read that here (as in many places in the country), a lot of what we try to recycle actually ends up landfilled in the end.

Our city and the big neighboring county stopped picking up glass a couple of years ago but I think the expense of picking it up was the reason. They installed big purple bins around and about that you can take your bottles to drop off.

I’ve been skipping the oil of late for pita chips and tortilla chips.

Same idea also works well forfor potato chips, zucchini chips, and okra chips / fries.

Too expensive for my budget

Milk in glass does bring back a lot of memories.

I have heard that one of the reasons why glass is not being recycled is that it is dangerous for the workers.

I gotta check, but the stores that I remember offering dairy in glass charged a bottle deposit (run THAT through your memory banks!) that was refunded or waived when you brought the empties back. This was recently, too. Has that system gone by the wayside?

10 seconds and it peels easily. 8 seconds for smaller cloves. When I get hot garlic (hard neck) with smaller cloves and compact flavor, ir really helps.

I think we still have it here, although I only know of one store that carries milk in glass bottles. I’ll check. What has obviously gone by the wayside is Coke in returnable glass bottles.

What is the return deposit?

I tried again, and this time I use more water (last time a little lower than the recommend mark line and this time a little higher). It is softer, but it still seems a harder than the same rice from a donabe or an electric rice cooker. It is a little tough to explain.

It can be all in my head, but I think what really happened is that donabe and electric rice cooker heat up slower and maintain a longer cooking time. Zojirushi even prides themselves of a slow cooking gradient.

Whereas, the microwave rice cooker heats up the rice very fast, and keeps on a roaring boil – it is a 12 min on high setting. The overall 12 min cooking is faster than my donabe or the Zojirushi.

Maybe I can adjust the microwave to have power gradient or something.

Bacon cooks well in the microwave between paper towel. Crisping other toppings mentioned in that video, thanks for sharing!

I live in NYC and got really tired of half gallons of milk for $8.50 at Zabars. Have now found Ronneybrook Farm glass bottles at the Sunday (near me) farmer’s market (assume they hit other markets as well) where I think it’s $4 for the milk, and $2 deposit (but I’ve only done this once so far). They return the deposit when they get the bottle back.

Don’t know.
I’ll ask tomorrow.

Our recyclers pulverized the glass or use in a number of applications: paving and landscaping, household counters, art etc. I never heard about danger, but heard plenty about the expense involved.

Yes, the inside sometimes stays too al dente with microwaving.

Not in SF Bay Area.
Straus Family Creamery packs in Glass that is washed and reused rather than recycled.
There is a $3 Deposit on the Bottle.
I believe the same system is used for Beer Bottles in Germany. Not sure about the rest of Europe. There was a change in the shape of the Bottle not too long ago, that may have been to try to standardize across the EU?

Thanks for confirmation.

I have found I cannot make brown rice in the microwave at all - even “quick cook” (not instant) brown rice.
