In my experience as a buyer on eBay, Mercari, etc., you’re right to be a bit skeptical about valuations you see there. Several times I’ve messaged buyers a general question about the product condition (if it’s hard to tell from photos) or number of items per set (if unclear from listing) or whatever, and gotten replies that both answered my question and cut the price in half.

So, it seems that the Buy/Sell category DOES exist now, just in time for me to start unpacking stuff.

First post here:

More to come, I hope.

Now that the buy/sell board is up, I would simply ask that people not comment on the ā€œaskā€ price posted by the seller.

Please try to keep the comments/replies to the product in question, i.e. what is it, how old is it, condition it is in, vintage, country of origin, etc.

The listed sale price of the product is what it is, and it should be left solely to the prerogative and discretion of the seller.

I would suggest any price discussion be conducted over direct messages - hopefully people know that feature exists and how to use it.

This is wise. Best to just vote with your feet or wallet.

Or maybe disable any posted responses at all outside PMs?

I think some public engagement is necessary and appropriate for informational purposes (i.e., what the product is, how to use it, etc.) as well as to generate ā€œpublicityā€ for the OP.

Just want to avoid a ā€œget out the pitchforkā€ response form the peanut gallery that the price is inappropriate.

Well, NOW I feel weird…

Laudable goal. People will also be tempted to comment on the condition, color, what they have, what’s better, how they should use it, all sorts of BS.

Better to just have a listing, and then let interested parties PM, IMO. That way HO doesn’t get in the middle of anything like a referee. Check out how eGullet does it.

However, for tinned copper, detailed weights and measurements, including thickness at base and rim, manufacture date and provenance, and complete maintenance records are mandatory. Pans not badged with a well known brand like Mauviel, Matfer, Bourgeat, Brooklyn, Hammersmith, or the like should have a link to the maker and supporting references. For stainless lined copper or copper with stainless handles, these requirements do not apply. Kidding.

You kid, but I have a 12 piece (if you count lids) copper clad stainless set by Calaphon. It goes for $800+ at Williams Sonoma.

I’m hoping to get $250

Best of luck. A nice line of a very well regarded brand ought to help!
