I just had a yellow peach from Whole Foods. It was from central California. It was ripe but lacked that intense taste and aroma that you sometimes find in really good ones. This happened a couple of years ago. I never found a great peach. I’m on the northern California coast. How have peaches been in your area? Better, I hope!
We just picked some peaches up yesterday and they are ready to eat today. North of Boston. We’ve had a hot humid July and I think it brought corn and peaches in a little early.
I am close to the central valley, and while you can find it now, I wonder if the best stone fruit is yet to come here. I am picking Flavor Grenade pluots and they are almost there. I have not yet eaten my first peach.
Here’s what they have at the farm closest to my home
I love a Red Haven! I will report back this week.
We had a few about 2 weeks ago that I purchased at our usual grocery store. They were the tastiest we’ve had in years. I didn’t bother putting them into a pie, tart, ice cream or cobbler. They were best eating out of hand with all those juicy dribbles.
There is a place selling Peaches at 2600 Laguna Road between Guerneville Road and River Road if you are near Sonoma County.
Haven’t tried them yet but Tree ripened makes a huge difference.
Also Dry Creek Peaches 2179 Yoakim Bridge Rd, Healdsburg, CA 95448.
The supermarket’s current stock of peaches and nectarines are from Spain, as expected at this time of year. They’re fine. Of course we always buy the “ripe and ready” ones, rather than the “ripen at home” ones (which never properly do).
Havent found a really good apricot this year. OK but not really good.
Loving all the peaches in China. Can’t get enough. The apricots from Ningxia and Xinjiang are to die for.
My kid said this peach is called Eagle Beak. It was all over Yunnan and new to me. Not that sweet, but great flavor.
I couldn’t resist looking that up. Interesting climate!
In Connecticut the local ones have been great! Peachy perfume.
I was wondering if maybe I need to wait a couple of weeks here. But thanks for all of your reports!
The first 3 litre basket of Ontario peaches that I purchased in Bayfield, Ontario was excellent this past week. Juicy and flavourful, not nearly. [Edit: That should be Not Mealy]
Sounds good, except for “not nearly”!
These O’Henry’s were just “fine” today; not amazing.
They’re not as ripe as they will be in a few days. Their apricots finished over the last weekend.
Lol .
Not Mealy.
My smartphone is stupid. ( Or I am, haha)
I live in South Carolina and took some peaches to my parents in Kentucky lastweek. I don’t even like peaches and they were fabulous.
Fresh Peach Vinaigrette
Makes over ¾ cup
- 1 very ripe peach, pit removed, cut into chunks (no need to peel)
- 1 heaping tablespoon roughly chopped shallot
- ¼ cup Champagne vinegar
- 1 tablespoon good Balsamic vinegar
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne
Place all ingredients in a mini food processor and process until smooth. Taste and adjust salt, honey, vinegar. delicious on just about any salad with fruit, nuts, salty cheese, or a little prosciutto: Just toss the greens with some dressing, then top with the rest of your ingredients and drizzle on a bit more vinaigrette.
I picked up 6-7 peaches, local to north of Boston, at my farmers market last Thursday. I was surprised to see them, but they said the weather had a lot to do with them coming out earlier than expected.
They desperately needed ripening, so they’re doing that on my kitchen counter, so I’ve not yet tried one. Had planned to bake Sunday, but didn’t. I expect to use 1 or two in the next couple of days with dinner and can post then.
Been getting great peaches at the farmers’ market here in Philadelphia, coming in from Lancaster County-ish area
Here in SE PA, peaches have been early, just like every fruit this season so far.
Very good so far, even with the earlier varieties which are typically less delicious.
Once the freestones come in, I’ll do my yearly preserving of peach halves in light syrup and peach jam.
I was surprised how good y first peach was about two weeks ago!
I had the same reaction. I literally bought ONE super-early variety peach from an orchard I frequent, just to test my presumption it wouldn’t be worth it. I was completely wrong. It was great, and so far every local peach I’ve bought this year (I buy abut 10/week from a few different farmers) has been great. Right now we’re getting Red Havens. Some have been clingy, but I believe the majority of the crop will be freestone.
