Got muh hair did today (high time!!), and bumped into one of my gal pals, who helps out at the local bakery. She absolutely adores me — sent my PIC back with a loaf last weekend “for me” that unfortunately contained apples and other fruit, so we brought it to the book party), and insisted she give me MOAR bread today
I chose a ciabatta, and she threw in a fennel loaf as well ,
Cochinita pibil taco (L), chorizo and very crispy potato taco (R), both with guacamole. Excellent salsa in container at the back. These tacos are from a tiny shack and so good! Only open M-F so I don’t get them as often as I’d like. Added bonus: being able to eat lunch outside this late in October!!
Lunch at a small Italian cafe out of town today. It was nice enough to sit outside, and my PIC and I shared the pancetta panino and the “muffaletta” toast. I wish I’d known that the pancetta panino includes some sort of jam (fig? strawberry?) as I don’t care for sweets in my savories, save for very few exceptions — and def not when I’m not expecting it. The salty olive relish on my PIC’s sammich was able to balance it all out a bit.
It was a festival of products from Niigota. In addition to the crazy selection of sake, there were also beautiful knives, fancy pears, soy sauce with amaebi (really good), etc.
Chicken pot pie. Four portions.
I used a bag of frozen mixed veg. steamed baby Yukon potatoes quartered, homemade herby cream of chicken gravy and topped with a puff pastry sheet.
Perfect Fall meal.
We wanted to grab breakfast/brunch/lunch out, since our hosts didn’t have much in the fridge, but our first 3 destinations (local favorites) had long lines — not much of a surprise on a Sunday.
We ended up at a local institution, The Corner Room, and I am so happy that we did. I had not dined there since I first moved to town over 2 decades ago.
Their breakfast menu was no longer available when we got there, unfortunately — I’d hoped for eggs Benny TBH, with a side of bacon, but both the So-Cal (basically a BLAT) and the double stack cheeseburger sounded pretty good to us. Both surpassed our expectations. The BLAT was fantastic: the sourdough toasted just right, with a tiny shmear of sriracha mayo, crisp lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and perfectly cooked bacon.
The side of fries we shared were crispy and hot, and the double stack burger was excellent — perhaps one of the best burgers I’ve had in town. Two patties still pink inside, melty cheese, seasoned tomatoes, onion, lettuce.
Heavy Metal Sausage Co had their house made scrapple at the farmers market, so brunch was scrapple, fried egg, and an arugula side salad. (Took a bite before I remembered to take the picture) . Scrapple was delicious! Some baguette to sop up the egg not pictured.
