My friend from SC came down again today to see her daughter & a couple of mutual friends who moved down here about a decade ago (and whom I hadn’t seen since).
I’d suggested we all meet at the SEA market, not knowing that temps would be even cooler than yesterday (minus the drizzle at least) …. so, not really picnic weather
Thankfully, food & company more than made up for it. My boo and I shared a few delicious lemongrass beef skewers,
a couple of pork spring rolls (not as good as Tabachoy’s) & fish cakes from the same place, which tasted like a soft version of kroepoek & very different from the tod mun pla I was expecting. I had high hopes for the Thai boat noodle soup from a stand where the woman was working 3 woks and a pot at the same time
The portion was incredibly generous for $16 — roughly half a pound of rice noodz, same amount of very tender beef, a few gai lan stalks, and about a quart of broth. I perused the condiment tray to adjust the heat level, but didn’t see any fish sauce or vinegar around. The broth was not as good as “my” Berlin soup lady’s, but as it seemed to get chillier over the course of the afternoon, at least it warmed us up
Our friends were happy with their stuffed chicken wings & som tam, basil-fried rice, and summer rolls.
It was nice to see everyone, and my gal pal even brought a bday card along from all my ladies, whom I’ll be missing for this years festivities
