Just a couple dogs.
What is it that’s so appealing about noodles? I mean, besides the slurping?
I find myself wanting noodles at least a couple of times a week.
Catfish filet - not often I get a nice thick one like this. The sides - mayonesa con limon and Mezzetta’s Hot California Mix were poor choices, too bold for the mild (farm-raised) fish. But nothing was wasted.
Love the pickle spear move!
Second half of oysters is for tomorrow.
.
I ate the Bauernmischbrot (farmer’s bread half rye) with other things. Bought it at Hinkel baker in Düsseldorf.
.
The pastries are also from Hinkel. Poppy seed “snails”. I ate 1 bite for the poppy seeds, the partner ate the rest.
.
We split the quark balls right down in half. I like these as they are not sweet. They don’t have a quark filling, the quark is actually in the dough which is deep-fried in hot fat. One of the most popular food items at Christkindlmarkt.
.
5 of each. Lebkuchen Schmidt has a shop in many cities around Germany, opens only from November, I think.
.
A supermarket opposite the local market has 2 brands of peanut flips.
Hinkel is so famous now that there’s English language option on their site.
Flippies FTW. Ja is just a generic supermarket brand.
Tiny line of texts says made for Rewe. I guess it’s also for other supermarkets, just add “Edeka” or “Kaufland” etc.
Gonna try the flippies soon.
Those snails are calling my name. In the Czech-owned bakeries/cafes/kolache shops in the Czech Belt here, poppy seed kolaches are common and so good.
Have never had quark, though similar products. Will be on the lookout for those.
Oyster season is underway here.
Lunch in Düsseldorf, at a local brewery. I’m a supporter of traditional breweries and make them my top priority to eat and drink there.
.
The lunch menu changes every week and every day of the week a different dish is served. This one reminded me of a dish in Bavaria (and Austria) called “Krenfleisch” (slow-cooked meat served with fresh grated horseradish). I prefer it without the cream sauce and with half a root of fresh horseradish. The heat in the cream killed any traces of (jarred) horseradish here.
.
Regular man’s good and plain home-style kale with Speck and Mettwurst.
.
Pickled beetroots
Frikandelle (pan-fried meat patty)

Server forgot his notepad. They carry a big belt wallet and do the maths without a machine as you can see on the notepad.
The amount you see is the amount you pay. One less source of stress when eating out.
- Clever vandalism. Is probably paid for by Miele. Great shop to browse, btw.
- Sitting behind the bus driver on the way home. This is not a night photo, just in broad day light (without the light) in autumn or winter.
My lunch at home is simpler and requires using my bare hands.
I love poppy seed pastries. In pretty much anything, really.
There’s never enough poppy seed filling in anything. I make it myself and add it to yoghurt, oat porridge, and even spread it on bread.
That beef in horseradish sauce looks quite lovely, and at 8.90€ a steal! Was it as good as it looks? Or better than 8.90€?
Oh, the dish was perfectly fine. I would have liked fresh horseradish on the side. I love that fresh horseradish kick.
Needs to go back to Franken for Lebkuchen and Krenfleisch!
Rainy day soup…collards, a pork bone, beans, onion, carrot, parmesan rind made friends in the instant pot at various times along with other seasonings.
A little piece of cake and some berries was dessert.
And for lunch today….a zoftig galette filled with sausage, Swiss chard, sautéed onions, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese were the main players. A white flour/einkorn flour crust with a little cheddar in it was a tender choice for the galette. Radicchio salad on the side and the last of the chocolate cake was dessert.
It looks amazing and tastes amazing for sure
Thank you, Stef…I love that crazy chocolate sourdough cake from KA.
I have it bookmarked. I think i made one years ago.
Finally managed to stop in at the newish French diner in town: I got the œufs en cocotte with bacon, leeks and mushrooms, my PIC the farmer’s omelet with ham, potatoes, cheese & a side of hash browns. I don’t like hash browns, and these were no exception, but that is entirely on me. The omelet and my cocotte were both very good, and I enjoyed a cold glass of milk with my meal.
We also got an order of the lemon-glazed crullers, one of three we split hot from the fryer for dessert. The other two were saved for afternoon coffee treats.
Aldi’s smoked salmon, 2 scrambled local eggs with heavy cream, Everything seasoning, and fresh dill.
Pumpkin soup
.
Spicy boletus (from dried, Italian).
.
Crispy shallots for the crunch
.
More German poppy seed pastries. “Mohnstrieseln”
.
Always good with (Oaxacan) hot chocolate.
.
Square ones are called “Mohnkuchen”. Both have crumbles (“Streuseln”) and a glaze on top.
.
Another meal… braised duck legs in old beer. I used to eat duck legs regularly until recently. The price has doubled so guess it’s just an occasional treat from now on. Also, my own tart kumquat-lemon marmalade barely visible in the background.
.
The beer in which the legs were cooked. 10 years best-by date was 2018. I had forgotten about this beer in my stash. Drank the last one with the meal.
