A couple of recent lunches:

Torta with beans, fried panela cheese, egg, tomato, salsa, and avocado with a side of more beans.

Zaru soba with miso soup, chicken karaage, and tomatoes and broccolini with Kewpie sesame dressing.

Gorditas with black beans and cheese. Gorditas did not puff like they were supposed to, but tasty nonetheless.

All looks so good!

Do you make the karaage or is it from frozen?

Thanks! I made the karaage - marinated skin on boneless chicken thigh chunks in sake, soy, ginger, garlic, and a bit of mirin for 15 minutes, and then dredged in potato starch. Fried at 350 for about 5 minutes.

Looks superb.

I deep fry very rarely, so I was almost hoping that was a good frozen version :joy:

Fideos on the menu for lunch today. A bit of a clean out the vegetable bin, it included yellow/green zucs, string beans, sugar snap peas, tomatoes and shallot. The noodles were toasted along with a sofrito. Some leftover chicken was the protein and homemade broth was the liquid. A piece of chocolate/cherry cake provided dessert.

And lunch today…charred onion and peppers, tomatoes, chicken and a little Hatch chili sauce. A slice of apricot/cherry pastry was dessert.

Isn’t it just the prettiest vegetable?! Perfection is attainable!

It’s been hot and getting much hotter starting tomorrow. Chilled romanesco soup with pan-roasted tomatoes.

The heat and glorious sun reminds me of Greece so Cretan-style toast is on the lunch menu.

Brought back from Cretan capital. Very nice cheese. Cheese specialist said this is the one for dakos.

Grated tomatoes for the toast. I even used Cretan olive oil.

From Santorini

Fresh marjoram from the garden

And lunch today…sautéed peppers with capers, black olives and mint. Hard boiled egg with radish, burrata with basil, potato salad and marinated eggplant salad with oregano. Flat bread with sumac and za’atar.

Soybean sprout soup with rice - kongnamul-gukbap following a recipe from Maangchi. Very good, would make again. Also a good way to use up leftover bean sprouts.

Instant noodles - Guangyou Chongqing Spicy Hot, bought at H-Mart. Dressed up with some broccolini and some dumplings I had in the freezer. Pretty good instant noodles, nice somewhat chewy wheat/sweet potato noodles with chili oil and soup base that tasted good if a little heavy on the MSG.

Mettbötchen! (Non-Germans might freak out)
Hackbällchen? (Meat balls)
And is that a Halve Hahn* without a “top”? (*Rye roll with cheese)

You’re in Köln this weekend/recently then. Drink more (Gilden) Kölsch :beers:

Yup. The (mini) Mettbrötchen was surprisingly lean, so I didn’t have to spend the rest of the afternoon trying to get pork floss outta my teef

The (mini) Frikadellen were a little heavy on the bread content, but flavorful nonetheless. The Halve Hahn was what you’d expect it to be… if you know what it is

It was the perfect amount of food for a light lunch with, sadly, only two Gilden. I’m not much of a day drinker and had to get my ass to Bonn.
