Interesting thread. Skimmed it all. Some of the CBD and CBN gummies help with sleep but no big high for me. Edibles are highly individualized…one gummie might put someone under, while some can eat a whole pack and not feel it (like me). Some brands work better than others, which makes me think cannabis edibles will never be standardized. Too many variables. Smoking flowers is still my preference. And did you know there’s now strains that suppress the munchies? (look it up)
Started smoking dope in HS, at 15, living in a SoCal coastal town. I stopped cold turkey the day I graduated HS because I realized I couldn’t control it and get out of Dodge. In college I refrained until I realized I could control it and it had social advantages. Started baking brownies again in a student coop and it became a thing. I can call a dozen people and start laughing about it. Graduated college and stopped again…well into my 40s. Then I was working about 70 hours a week, FT job, healthy side gig….and then a bunch of high stress stuff happened beyond my control….and I sparked up again and I really do think it kept me sane and reduced stress. Then I took care of my father in old age….and cannabis help get me through it.
Regarding whole weed edibles, treat it like acid is my experience until you tried it a few times. Plan on staying some place familiar for 8 or more hours, no driving, amongst friends, etc. Lots of fun. I think I baked my first batch of special brownies at 16…because the word on the street is you waste nothing. A weed cake was the only time I ever saw a cake “fall”….but still ate it.
In any case, craziest thing are the prices. Before recreational legalization, easy to drop $200-400 on a good ounce. Now you can get a good ounce with THC%, CBD%, etc….for $50 bucks and tax.
Still very few cannabis restaurants. I’m thinking liability and it takes a bit of time to get stoned….and then you stick around to eat? Smoking lounges are just now getting legalized but the thing is, after a couple of hits of decent weed, are you going to hang around and smoke more? I think there might be one or two in the Bay Area. In any case, I don’t see lounges taking off. I think cannabis smoking areas for restaurants or cafes make more sense.
Were these studies done with people who predominantly combust/vape cannabis, or did the (preliminary) findings also include those lucky folk who ingest?
PS: I realize the title is ‘edible cannabis,’ but the first link you posted refers to combined risk with tobacco use, which would be irrelevant for those who don’t smoke cannabis, or don’t mix it with tobacco.
Edibles (one) have failed tonight much to my chagrin. Will try another one - fingers crossed. The one I had in the early hours yesterday, produced such a soothing, soporific effect, I slept until noon. When they work, they really work for me. I wish the results were more consistent though. Does give me pause when I see studies published on the dangers, thus I use somewhat sparingly. During periods of heavier use, they seemed to not work very well at all. Hard to find that elusive, and perfect drug that poses no dangers!
Everything in moderation, including moderation. Regardless of how healthily we eat, how much we exercise, or which drugs we choose/have to take — no matter how careful we are, we’re all gonna die eventually
Both - in the end cannabis independently of the route of administration will interact/trigger/inhibit certain biological pathways which are associated with higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. The CVD research over the last 5-10 years has made significant progress and we start to have a much better understanding of those pathways and how they can be interfered with external “triggers”, e.g. food, cannabis etc.
A lot of variables are in play when consuming edibles, like the products, when did you last eat and did you eat anything with the edibles. One example is food with fat (ice cream) will slow down absorption or recommended you eat high fat food if the edibles are two strong and you want to weaken the effect. Unfortunately you have to play around with different brands, doses, and what/when you eat.
I’ve taken gummies for sleep….went to sleep with no effect, then I woke up 3 hours late with a weird buzz and dreams. You just never know. I’ve used the same brand and had the regular effect of making me drowsy.
Moderation is a good practice. OTOH, there’s no evidence of death by cannabis overdose. There are times you get so high you go to ER, and of course psychosis and death under the influence or related to use (accidents, Darwin) but pure ODs due to cannabis only consumption is extremely rare, never recorded. Of course bad things can still happen, so moderation and being reasonable cautious is good.

I thought THC was fat soluble and the opposite is true?
THC is fat soluble. Not sure of the complete science but eat high fat food before edibles delays the on-set. Not sure if eating after edibles delays or lowers effect. Here’s what google AI says:
Consuming high-fat foods with cannabis edibles can significantly influence how your body absorbs and processes the cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD
I live in Washington, so I’ve been experimenting with edibles for some time now. I have my favorite brands, and strains, but it’s almost like a crap shoot or a game of roulette if they induce a pleasant high with drowsiness. I have found fat to increase the effect, for me anyway. Last night and in the early a.m. the 2 I took failed to help me sleep at all. If I wait for a few days, they’ll likely work again. I treat the gummies as I would any psychotropic meds now. My Doc is aware of my usage, but is reticent to approve or condemn - still I will err on the side of caution with my usage. The worst that typically happens with me, is a bit of paranoia strikes, but it’s worse if I smoke it.
I’ve got a magnesium supplement called CALM, that I’ll try for tonight. Hope it works because I’m sleepless in Seattle lol
While this data only shows a correlation and cannot prove that marijuana caused these effects, it is well-established that the drug can raise blood pressure and heart rate and alter the heart’s rhythm, said Dr. Ersilia DeFilippis, a cardiologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
For indications where you can’t run clinical trials easily (like cannabis and heart diseases) we always have to rely on meta-studies and thereby correlation. What makes it more likely that there are not only correlation but also causation is the advancements in understanding biological pathways which show connections between cannabis and heart diseases
A commentor on that Times article pointed out that one of the studies was done in France. I replied that, as I recall, in Europe cannabis is commonly mixed with tobacco when rolling joints. I don’t know if the study controlled for that. The combination used to make me nauseous, when I lived in Paris.
Any smoke you inhale is going to be bad for you, particularly your vascular system. That’s common sense and basic knowledge. Hence I go for the higher potency cannabis so less actual smoking is involved, usually a couple or three small hits. I’ve heard people talk about packing a small, loose bowl of weed to make a fast burn and quick intake because dragging on it like Bogey is taking in unnecessary smoke. BTW, Willie Nelson stopped smoking dope due to age (92) but has edibles.
In any case there’s a difference between tobacco and cannabis smoke. Both are bad but way more research on tobacco and nicotine, and addiction. I never knew cannabis and tobacco are commonly combined in Europe. To me that’s weird, as in why? I’ve only had a puff of tobacco once in my life and I didn’t like it.
Because smoking was and, depending on where you are in Europe, still is YUGE.
I also mentioned in my comment to @ernie_in_berkeley that hash was far more common back in the 80s than good flower, which was barely available at all, and it’s impossible to roll a doob just with hash, never mind wasteful.
I find blunts disgusting, but I find cigar smoke disgusting.
I prefer a nice bowl with just flower, which my German friends can’t wrap their heads around, like “isn’t that too strong?”
