Hot weather dinners - your favourites

Cold beer is always good on a hot day. Filling too especially the darker varieties. But Harters is in the UK where the cold beer is more like lukewarm.

Hot and humid here this week. On tap: grilled drunken shrimp tacos, grilled chicken yakitori meatballs with rice or pita, Caesar salad with HB eggs, creamy corn pasta with basil from NYT. Lots of cold white wine.

We’re all bound to find out what that’s like in the coming years.

Yes, for another 2 weeks. Can’t say I’m particularly excited to get back.

I know you won’t take the advice of a cold beer or wine. And really, all experts say to lay off the alcohol in extreme heat. I like to keep a pitcher of ice water with fresh mint in the fridge (mint grows like a weed, so admittedly I have a never-ending supply available) and a pitcher of lemonade. And there’s always a pitcher of unsweetened iced tea for mom and anybody who may stop by.

Take it from someone who has suffered heat-related illness: hydration is critical.

But, but . . . we get to watch endless commercials for the upcoming senate and governor races here in Pennsyltucky. Think of the fun you’ll have!

Heat warnings in the other London (Ontario) today, too.

Nothing record breaking, but information for people on where to find cooling centres, and to be careful outside and with their pets.

High of 31 C with a Humidex of 39 C today and tomorrow.

This happens relatively often around these parts, and air conditioning is common compared to in the UK.

I don’t really drink alcohol apart from when I meet friends for cocktails so it isn’t a beat the heat strategy for me.

My hot weather drinks are

Infused water. I use strawberries, peaches, raspberries.

Lemonade

Iced tea

Arnold Palmer

Greek Frappe (iced coffee made with Nescafe, frothed with milk and sugar)

Iced lattes

Iced dalgona coffee

It really can depend on the humidity and the humidity.

When it’s hot outside, I want lemon gelato, passionfruit gelato, cassis gelato or mint granita.

I lose interest in creamy flavours, and crave something tart or refreshing.

The best ice cream parlor in Berlin (IMNHO) has a marzipan / donut peach / orange / champagne flavor that is the perfect combo of creamy sweetness from the marzipan, and tart freshness from the fruit flavor.

They also have a white chocolate / grapefruit one, but I’m not sure that would work for me (and I love grapefruit).

Oooh! Agua fresca is perfect in this weather, too. My favorite taco place in Philly always has a few to choose from. I’ve had their strawberry agua fresca and it was so refreshing!

I’ve been on the wagon for years. The fridge is stuffed with San Pellegrino drinks - the lemon & mint is a favourite.

Do you happen to have a go-to method for preparing a Greek frappe at home? I think I have seen (imported) Nescafé at a local Greek food shop. So if I can bring the proper method and the ingredients together…:grinning:

Lemon, mint, strawberries, blueberries . . . despite the heat, summer has its benefits,

I’ve liked a mango chili gelato, and a blueberry basil gelato, when it’s been hot out.

I love lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines and yuzu, but can’t do grapefruit . It’s a taste I’ve never acquired.

Realize these might be too sweet for some- I like Piña Coladas, lime daiquiris and strawberries daiquiris (virgin versions, too)

You might like their bergamot flavor. It tastes like Earl Grey, but in a good way.

They do many sorbets like mango, orange thyme, blueberry baiser, lemon cinnamon, etc.

All the cool salads you can muster, topping with a cold grilled protein (tofu, shrimp, chix, sirloin). Cold grilled chicken salad sandwiches. Chilled sun tea with mint and lemon. Some say hot (temp) foods make you feel cooler; they might but they don’t keep the house cool!
We were anticipating hot temps and sequestering indoors due to forest fire smoke keeping us inside this year so we invested in a mini-split for our sleeping and lounging area. So far it has been worth every penny put into it. All will be well as long as the power doesn’t go down.

There are some nice earl grey and royal milk tea ice creams popping up at 2 of Toronto’s better Ice Cream shops the past 2 summers.

I’m sure I would like them

jarred roasted red peppers, pureed. Really adds a nice touch, especially if you have access to piquillo peppers from Spain. I also love poached shrimp or crab added, chopped chives, and basil.
