Cooking with Kamala’: Inside Harris’ not-so-secret obsession with food

Cooking with Kamala is still around on YT.

“Bacon is a spice, as far as I’m concerned,”

Now that’s a platform I can support. I guess no Big Macs or beyond-well-done steaks on that dining room table?

We used to have an Austrian place in town where “bacon is a herb.”

Such a versatile food.

This one is quite fun. Even 4 yrs later.

@shrinkrap Did you see the dosa video with Mindy Kaling from a few years ago?

The tasters choice bottles for spice storage were :100: — though mine are Rao’s

(Also perfect eating with fingers at the end, paging @medgirl … note curling in the fingers in or keeping them over the plate — as ingrained :ok_hand:t3:)

(@Madrid see Mindy making dosa from ready batter — be not afraid!)

I did! That was nice! Those and Rao’s are big bottles! How long would a bottle of cumin last you? Cumin seed is probably the spice I use most. Cumin and various crushed red peppers. My husband loves the part in “The Hundred Foot Journey” where Papa says “SPOON IT IN!” He’s always saying that.

I have to stay tuned for the rest.

Yes!

They hold my “big” stock — I buy coriander and cumin powder, chilli powder, and turmeric in bags that are packed by the 1/2-1 kg / 1-2 lbs. A few tbsp (maybe 1/4 cup max) get transferred to a masala dabba / spice box for everyday use (it has 7 little cups in it). Like this (or this if you want to get all fancy and spendy).

Those jars also hold lentils, beans, rice, etc — everything that comes in 1 lb / 1kg sizes.

Though at one point I was seeking uniformity and purchased PET bottles. (But I can’t give up the Rao’s jars — I find other uses for them.)

I haven’t watched that movie in a long time — might be time for a rewatch! Om Puri (the dad) was a phenomenal actor, lost too soon.

Love it. We don’t have Taster’s Choice jars, but a collection of various jars from miscellaneous sources ranging from Nescafé to a really nice sturdy one from a Turkish brand of smoked aubergine.

Our biggest containers are for cumin and dried red chillies.

The refined eating with fingers technique - glad to see it in a potential US president!

Many of mine are from Costco peppercorns.

Speaking of masala dabbas, I was sorely tempted by this Fabindia one when I was last in India:

So beautiful! But totally impractical for someone like me, whose spice cupboard looks like an incendiary device went off inside it.

Hahaha me too — luckily they sold out

But seriously — ONE spoon? You need one just for haldi :woman_facepalming:t2:

(The Disapora one is very pretty, but I laughed at the price when they launched it.)

I would love a set of Talenti jars, but I don’t eat enough Talenti.

I like the glass jars of various sizes that Penzey’s sells.

But @Aubergine the whole point is reusing jars of some other product you use so much of that you have a whole matching collection of those jars

I try to avoid plastic. I use the small Libbey glass jars that Smitten Kitchen uses (I have bigger packages, transfer as necessary.)

Gosh, that’s gorgeous.

Very pretty. (Meanwhile my spice caninet, like @medgirl’s, will never be pretty enough for public viewing — even though it’s quite organized!)
