Still on my wish list…

Looks like you can get for as low as $35 from various sources.

I couldn’t resist, can’t wait to see all it offers. If it matters, the print is quite small, and there are no photos. But it still seems luxurious and compelling.

(It does have one of those little ribbons :slightly_smiling_face: )

$35 plus tax, for 1,680 recipes = about 2 cents per recipe ?

Down another recipe/cookbook rabbit hole today took me eventually to “The Greatest Traybake Cookbook Ever” by John Gregory-Smith courtesy of Nigella’s cookbook corner. It’s indexed on EYB and sounds good to me. I don’t own any of his books but Turkish Delights has been on my list for a long time. Has anyone cooked from his books? Traybakes just came out the end of January and hardcover has to come from UK.

Note: The recipe from Ramadan Kitchen for Macaroni Bechamel sounds good. Also Nigella’s Cookbook Corner.

Mighty Spice had a bit of a following on CH, and was a successful COTM. The recipes are somewhat simplified, but generally pretty good given their limited number of ingredients. Some years back, I got a cheap ebook deal on Orange Blossom & Honey, and I’ve only ever cooked one recipe from it, but it was good.

I really loved Mighty Spice, and its follow up was good too. I don’t cook from it much now, but it is coming apart at the seems from when I used it weekly.

I haven’t cooked from it in years, but given my proclivities at the moment, I should revisit it for sure.

John Gregory-Smith’s books go on kindle sale quite often, so I picked up a few, but have never been motivated to cook from them somehow.

In David Leibovitz’s latest newsletter he mentioned Helen Gig’s new book: Baking and the Meaning of Life. I was surprised I was able to download an ebook loan from my library without having to place a hold.

Her story is similar to Joanne Chang’s … she got a degree but her heart was set on baking.

I just started looking through the book, so far, the recipes seem pretty complicated, more work than I’m willing to do right now.

I might be able to tackle the Orange Cake.

Typo above: it’s Helen Goh

I just picked up the Helen Goh book from the library right before the blizzard started. We might lose power because of heavy, wet snow and high wind so I can’t count on baking but I can look through the book! I read the NYT interview with her around Valentine’s Day and it sounds interesting.

You had me at orange cake

Is the recipe much changed from her earlier published version?

Zaytinya by Jose Andres is on kindle sale for 1.99.

I’ve been trying not to get sucked in by these deals, but I have also never had a meal I didn’t love at Zaytinya, so I gave in.

I think he would make a fun COTM theme sometime.

I can’t compare because it won’t let me see the recipe. I know you boil a whole orange first.

I have a feeling the recipe is the same.

I can see the Good Food Favourite orange cake recipe. The instructions (which are copyrighted) are pretty much the same as in the Favorite Orange Cake recipe in the “Baking & Meaning of Life” cookbook (p. 159). The ingredients (which are not copyrighted) are also the same in the cookbook, except in increased amounts, and the baking time is also increased (by 10 minutes).

In the cookbook, it’s 2 oranges, 330 g flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 170 g butter, 330 g sugar, 3 eggs, 3/4 c milk. And the frosting is 60 g butter, 180 g powdered sugar, zest of 1 orange, 1 tbs plus 1 tsp milk, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract.

Thanks @Madrid!
Looks like it’s more sugar and orange to flour (previous was 225g flour for 1 200g orange and 170g sugar).

What size cake tin? The old proportions called for 7” / 18cm.

I don’t have a boiling orange rn, only sumos, but now I want orange cake :joy:

I looked at the recipe in my ebook loan again, yes, 2 oranges. Says 8” Cake pan. I wonder if loaf pan would do.

She says to purée boiled oranges in food processor; makes more than recipe calls for. Says remainder is good in carrot cakes.
