Appliances on your Countertop...

Truth. About the lobbying.

Hi Greg,

I have two “convection” ovens. I call them my “toaster” and “roaster.”

My “toaster” oven works perfectly for warming up or toasting most anything, but really can’t handle any of the ECI pots I need to move from stove top to oven. My “roaster” handles my ECI pots and can be used to roast vegetables and meats, but toasting doesn’t work very well. My" roaster" does have automatic controls that used to frustrate me, but I’ve learned ways to get them to do what I want.

I regularly use the roaster for small baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash.

I just threw my electric can opener away . . .

It’s possible to hold it just above the bottom and accomplish the goals of the blender.

It’s also even easier to rest it on the bottom and engage the instrument without applying downward force and without sliding it around the inside of the pan in a way that might scrape it.

I would have no hesitation to use it in tin lined copper.

Yeah, I have the same deal. Love the thing. I think “air fryer” is a tad gimmicky, as it refers to convection. Renamed a convection oven to make more $. But I toast and roast. Now, I rarely fire up the big oven. I was astonished to see it could fit a 10 inch CI skillet, make a ham in a 4 quart. Bought one for my mom last Christmas.

Part of the homeostasis of a marriage. God knows what the counter would look like if I had my dastardly way.

Sounds similar to the one I had. Funny, I remember the little bowl. I think I got about 20 years out of it.

Being of a frugal nature, I do look for things like this in the second hand world. Seems to me a stick blender would usually be one of those things you wouldn’t give up until it’s on its last leg or dead. I could only dream of finding a Bamix at a rummage sale, or some other second hand venue. I’ve found some great stuff over the years. I think my luckiest shot would be at estate auctions where my mom lives (Sun City, AZ). Never buy green bananas. Often good second hand stuff at those turnouts.

When you’re old and have mobility and strength issues, you may miss it…a

(That said, of course I have a twisty can opener, because we don’t have a generator.)

How many appliances you have out is clearly dependent on how much counter space you have. I have sixteen square feet, and four of those are the corner sections of a U-shaped counter.

My mother had even less; the dish drainer took almost half, which gives you some idea.

I threw away a perfectly working ugly electric in favor of the beautiful one I just threw away–'cause it didn’t work properly. . .

I make bad decisions sometimes.

My new replacement Oster Toaster has improved on the features that endured itself to me–and I forgot–as it deteriorated.

I can once again set the degree of toasting I want and get it without watching.

Look at those two sets of knives, one in the red holder that are front and center and rather grabbable, for lack of a better term, and another set of half western half Asian (dare I say fusion?) knives tucked away in the back.

Hi alarash,

There’s one more set of damascus knives magnetized to a cherry wood strip that I believe have the most cultural fusion–including my birthday Chef knife. . .

I’ve always wanted a magnetic knife holder. I have a block of shin classic from 20 years ago on the counter and a dedicated knife drawer with a knife insert to house the rest.

The real problem is all the Victorinox fibrox and Dexter chef knives I’ve accumulated from thrifting. It’s been hard to pass those up for $3 when I see them and now they’re clogging up that drawer. I think they’re pretty classic western shaped by my understanding and probably intended for commercial kitchens mostly.

Hi alarash,

I threw away my slotted storage unit and went to magnetic solutions, but now I’m back to slots–but completely different. It’s a double slotted system that can be taken apart and cleaned–if it’s ever necessary.

All that remains of my older approach is that I still have some catastrophic disaster knives in my morgue.

Maybe you should have a morgue, too?

I haven’t used a can opener in literally years.

All the cans I buy have this ‘thing’ on the top so I can open it without using a can opener.

My wife wanted an air fryer based on her sisters advice.

Little did she know it was just a mini oven with convection.

Yet another electric tool, that really does nothing our oven can’t do already.

Hi Claus,

My new Kuhn Rikon “side” can opener has a “hook” that connects it with that “thing” and makes it easier to pull off a lid–even with a tin of King Oscar sardines.

It’s grabbable–off my new red container.
