Appliance Hell

I wouldn’t even know where to begin to diagnose or repair a microwave. Way out of my league!!

This microwave (built-in) came with the house. It appears the previous owner liked Whirlpool appliances. It was pretty basic and lasted approximately 12 years, so maybe that’s a good life for a microwave?? I really don’t know. Sunshine & I did give it a workout, so I do think we got our money’s worth out of it.

Last year, I replaced the fridge and we went a plain no extra(s) model. Freezer on top, fridge on the bottom, no ice maker nor any other frill. Fingers crossed this one lasts for a while.

Along with the code it spewed bubbles all over the floor. There were bubbles all over the clean-ish dishes inside. Not how I was planning on spending a surprise day off from work. . .

Bubbles?? Are sure Lawrence Welk didn’t build this dishwasher??

My GE is adjustable, too. I don’t like things that make me jump!

A Sazerac. All booze, cold. Great medicinal values.

Noted! Since the stove problem turned out to be an errant bolt dropped into the vent by the microwave installers, I will attempt a Sazerac tonight. Because Wednesday.

‘Because Sazerac’ or ‘Because Rye’ also work equally well.

FYI, this is my whisky collection only.

:+1:t2: I need a bigger condo….

Sooooo…I’m in appliance replacement hell right now. The previous owner had manuals and purchase dates for all the appliances EXCEPT the dishwasher.

Whirlpool electric dryer - Bought March 2002
Whirlpool washer - Bought April 2002
Amana Radarange microwave - Bought April 2002
KitchenAid fridge - bought December 2002
Whirlpool electric (coil) range/oven - Bought February 2007 (BEING REPLACED)
Whirlpool dishwasher - bought (unknown - but I’m assuming somewhere between 2002 and 2007) (DIED AND BEING REPLACED TONIGHT!)

So - on those last two - considering they lasted in the area of 17-20 years since I moved here in April 2011, I think I got my money’s worth!

But for all appliance replacements since I moved in:

I bought my townhouse in April 2011. The outside AC cooling unit’s compressor died and the entire unit had to be replaced the following summer during a heat wave - but it was “older than most of these last” according to the HVAC guy. Don’t recall the brand, but went with the same one. I believe it’s a Goodman, based on a quick Google of what they look like.

The hot water heater started leaking in 2018 - that got replaced. I think the older one was from late 1990s.

The old Goodman furnace decided it didn’t want to do much work to heat the house in November of 2021 but I was able to muddle through that winter. Replaced it in July 2022 with a new Goodman. Don’t recall the age of the one that was replaced. But again - HVAC dude said I got my money’s worth.

The dishwasher started leaking a LOT from a corner of the door in August 2023. I stopped using it and started hand-washing. Yeah - enough of THAT. Finally purchased a new one in February of 2024, a Maytag brand (which is owned by Whirlpool, as are Amana and KitchenAid [KA is the high end out of the Amana/Whirlpool/Maytag/KitchenAid brands].

After a previous try where the plumber couldn’t get it out of its location (issues with the former owner’s contractor putting up multiple flooring pieces in FRONT of the dishwasher’s kick plate that my BIL had to remove last weekend), it should be installed tonight. So please please PLEASE keep your fingers crossed he can get the old one out and new one installed tonight.

And while shopping for the dishwasher, I also decided ENOUGH with the electric coils on the fugly range. So a week after buying the dishwasher, I went back and bought a Maytag ceramic glass shatter resistant cooktop range. Didn’t know when that was coming in, as they had none in stock, but I was just told yesterday was built more quickly by Whirlpool then expected (wasn’t expecting it until late April)! So that’s supposed to be installed on Saturday, March 31st. I AM SO EXCITED!

The washer and dryer are the oldest, so those might be the next to be replaced, although they’re both working OK for now.

In case you are looking for appliances, LG is having a pretty good site-wide sale on appliances.

Well, it WILL be if the new dishwasher gets installed tonight! :grinning:

Thanks, but looks like only front load washers available for the sale, and I’d rather have a top-load. Thankfully, my washer and dryer are still plugging away, and considering the chunk of change that went on my Amex for the dishwasher and range, I’m hoping to put off any more larger purchases for now.

Front load washers remind me never to buy a walk-in tub…

Well, depending on your eventual need as you age, it might be the way to go.

I purchased one front loader washer (brand new) and it grew mold in the gasket. Apparently, I just didn’t do enough laundry (being single) and the water sat in the gasket for too long (in between loads). Mold had a chance to grow in the folds of the gasket.

I cleaned it up, sold it and went back to a top loader.

Okay, for a moment I thought you were talking dishwashers and was extremely confused

We have a front loader and do laundry about 1-2x/week (there’s just two of us). We towel out the gasket once the loads are done. So far so good. The machines were here when we moved in (2015). Not sure how old they are (some flavor of GE).

I understand your confusion, but when I was a kid, we had a top loading dishwasher. We didn’t have a built-in DW. It was a rolling cabinet designed to connect to a faucet and electrical outlet every time you ran it. It was quite a stretch down to the bottom rack, and when we first got it, I wasn’t tall enough to reach, so I was excused from emptying the dishwasher. After a couple of years, my older brother kindly pointed out to our parents that I had grown enough to grasp everything. [Putz]

Nope, I plan on doing the Fosbury Flop into the tub until the bitter end.
